bmx bikes on the playa

Post by cherie » Sat Apr 18, 2009 12:12 pm

My boyfriend has a BMX bike that he wants to bring to Burning Man. He says he can easily take it apart, and figures he can clean it really well once he gets back. My experience at BM has been with a bike I got from the Kiwanis that I donated back to them, and the bike I'm bringing this year I'm planning on donating after.

Has anyone had experience with a BMX on the playa? Can the dust easily be cleaned off? Is it easy to ride around there? He figures it'll be fun. I had the bike from hell last year, and I don't want him repeating my experience.

Thanks! :D

The only bummer I can see with a BMX bike is he will be pedaling ALL THE TIME. And with no gearing, he's gonna take a long time and effort to get where he's going.
If he's cool with that, let him do it. If he's good with breaking the bike down for cleaning, ya the dust is quite removable.

Just try to convey to him that (for the most part) bikes in Black Rock are for traveling some pretty respectable distances. Comfort and ease of use are the operating terms in my book.
Maybe have him go pedal a mile along the wet part of a beach, see how he feels then. Besides, being dead flat, he'll have nothing to do jumps on ^_^

p.s. The burningman vid on your blogspot (the 1st one 8min plus long) was made by one of my campmates Carlton. Everything from the home sweet home part in the 2nd half is my camp and all my friends. I'm the last guy in the vid, Chris. Glad you dug the vid !!

ya it'll jsut be a lot of pedaling....and they say don;t take anything to the playa that you are not comfortable losing/breaking. But last year down 2:00 there was a punk rock camp with a half pipe.....

Too bad the perimeter's closed off.. is some great BMX terrain on the eastern edge of the playa.

The bike itself will be fine, the biggest issue will be making sure no one borrows it for the rest of their life.

How much does he really love his bike?
