Golf cart rental

Post by Charlie_in_OC » Fri Apr 17, 2009 6:53 am

Yes... I know I'm going to get flamed for this.

Background:

I have a virgin friend who is handicap due to a vehicle accident. Walking more than a couple of hundred feet is difficult. A few of us have discussed setting up a fund to rent a golfcart for her so she will be able to see more of BRC than just our theme camp.

Already checked with DMV, getting a handicap placard will not be a issue, but they had no leads on a rental company.

Any leads on a rental company that delivers to the Playa?

Thanks!

I've never heard of such a beast, and I read every post on eplaya. If it had ever been discussed, I'd know. Best I've seen suggested is a used purchase from craiglist. As for delivery to the playa? Ooooh, again, I've never seen it mentioned. Highly unlikely.

I take it you cannot haul a golf cart yourselves. This will make the venture that much more difficult.

I cannot walk far anymore, we use a four wheeled bike with MyLarry pedaling. But we have to haul it in, so that's probably not workable for you.

Check the vegdes and gimps camp, and hot wheelz, they may have suggestions and help for you.

AntiM

Thanks for the info.

Only option for transporting one to BRC ourselves would be to leave one of the tow rigs at home and rent a box van that a golf cart would fit in. I use my E350 van to tow a car trailer with my MV to BRC and would be extremely leary of towing 12-14K with a rental.

In addation, I think the cost of renting a box van would probably be more than a golf cart rental.

I'll email some DPW friends. Can't believe that all of the carts at BRC are privately owned.

Thanks!

I'll keep a lookout, but I am not optimistic .

http://www.sierragolfcartandauto.com/

They advertise "special event rentals" but I'd bet they wouldn't haul one all the way out to the playa for you. So, head to the playa. Unload. Head into Reno (pay the exit fee) and come back with the golf cart. Near the end of the event: make the run into Reno to return the cart, come back and pack up. A pain, but ultimately workable.

IF they will rent to you for the playa...

I think they are delivered.

Oh by the way, if you do rent a golf cart, go with a gas engine. Those electrics define POS. And get a club or something to lock it when you're not using it.

Check out Hotwheels camp. They can hook you up with a Mutant cart while you are out there.

I'm not sure how flexible your accident-mate is, but here's a photo of Louise at BM2K in a gas-powered golf cart:

Obligatory flickr link back: http://www.flickr.com/photos/civex/3449968377/
(Those are our 2009 tickets under the photo I'm taking the photo of.)

We rented it from some local gokart place, they knew where we were taking it, and had no problem. It fit in our commercial van, and I could get it in and out of the van single-handed.

You can see Louise's crutches bungeed to the back of the cart and her walking cast on her right leg. Louise broke her leg at a Cyber Buss party hosted by Paul Addison. :->

As noted above Sierra Golf Cart and Auto has the "exclusive" contract with the Burning Man Org and the BLM. They don't have any more carts. sold out so to speak. In addition I was told their contract forbids renting to individuals at Burning Man.

what do you think you are going to be able to rent one for, for the week, plus delivery charges, etc? how much will you spend (in cleaning or security deposits) due to playa dust?

now factor in the hassle you are currently going through.

why don't you just buy a used one (for less than $1000) then get a trailer and tow it?

There are golf cart on craig's list for $50-$100up to 3600.

The cheap ones need a rattle can of paint and maybe batteries.

Golf Cart for your Hommie

Post by munney » Sat Apr 18, 2009 5:40 pm

Golf Cart, OK, but it should be Artified, So you and your hommie should get a plan together to make it a mutant vehicle, and get it Pre-approved to take out there, then just get the final stickers from the DMV at the proving grounds.

 You could do the same thing with a regular car, or some cheap POS from Craiglist, so you wouldn't have to do all the hastle of renting, trailers, etc...

I'd start designing the Mutant Vehicle now, with a Truck body, to handle all the hangers on out there.
Get some Flame thrower action, some Fake fur, maybe a Furry Turtle from the Galopagos with Fire breathing evolutionary powers.
One can even do local fundraiser parties to help out with the  MUNNEY.

Disabled participants are held to a different standard for licenses than fully-fledged Mutant Vehicles. As long as the participant has a city- or state-issued placard, they can drive what they bring (within reason). They're certainly encouraged to decorate/mutate their vehicle to the extent of their ability, and we've had some amazing disabled vehicles in the past, but it's not expected of them.

EDIT: Okay, I tried to change my .sig to add the disabled application link, but it's not coming up for whatever reason. (Of course, as soon as I make this edit, it'll show up and make a fool of me, but whaddya want.)

MV is/was a boat. Need to use the swim step to climb over the transom. I have given some thought to cutting the transom out of the hull to make entry / exit easier but would have to remove a 23 gallon propane tank and a 80 gallon water tank. Everything is always a comprimise.

When you first started this thread I called the united rentals in sparks, nv and they do have a 6 wheeled vehicle "Gator". The website says they even have 4 wheeled utility vehicles for rent. I know United Rental is all over Burning Man so delivery/pickup might not be as bad as you think. If you are still looking I suggest you speak with them.

Thanks!

Already switched to Plan B.

Have a golf cart and enough elwire left over from other projects to make it atleast half-ass interesting. Just need to work out the details of getting it to BRC.

To bad you can't drive it from OC to BRC. lets see 5 miles per hour, recharge every 30 miles, ( a round of golf somewhere) humm, better leave now.

We take the top off of our cart to fit inside a 12' trailer. But if we wanted we could put it on one of those cheap trailers sold at Hardly Freight. Any car could pull it.

(wow, I put in costa mesa, ca to Gerlach, nv and google said its, 666 miles...)
