Just desserts: Playa Style
After following BM like a puppy for about 7 years via stories, pictures, and the ePlaya I will finally make my own trek to BRC this year. Being the kind of person I am, and the experience I've had cooking in adverse conditions, the thought of eating Granola and MREs for a week makes me cringe. Cooking a variety of foods has never been a problem for me, I'm currently working on plans for a night of Playa Pizza.
What fails me are what comes after dinner. I've just made way too much peach & cherry cobbler while camping and my imagination seems to end at that point with nothing else to attempt.
What are your tried and true playa deserts?

Banana slices heated with some rum and lemon then served topped with canned dulce de leche crema for extra decadence. You can get the crema in Mexican markets and some decently stocked grocery stores.
Pound cake keeps well (high oil content...). Slice it and top with a bag of frozen strawberries (well melted frozen berries).
Nutella & graham crackers is always good.
Pie also keeps well. It's a staple at our traditional Thursday on the Playa Thanksgiving dinner meal.

I've done baked apples in the Coleman stovetop oven. Actually did that at DPW Depot during a Playa cleanup trip when we stayed there.
Core an apple, fill with cream or milk, butter, brown sugar, chopped walnuts and raisins, cinnamon, bake. The cream, butter and sugar come oozing out of the top in wonderful caramel lava. This is why I call them "Volcano Apples." You can also spike it with mead, rum or Bailey's, flambé it, et alia. Sub in rolled oats and granola for a breakfast version or if your people are allergic to nuts.
Here's a way to do Playa ice cream: Make your base at home, thoroughly chill in a Ziploc bag, and stash it in your cooler. Bring a garbage bag, fill it halfway with ice, put the bag of base in and cover with more ice. Go out to the street and yell, "Hey, I'm making ice cream! Does anyone want to help for shares?" Duck. Gather all your volunteers in a circle, close the garbage bag with a ziptie (tightly!) and toss around until All Your Base Belongs To Antarctica. Pop open the Ziploc, distribute spoons or cookies and proceed to have at :9

I am loving these suggestions. I am tempted to bring an ice cream maker with me so I can plan on maybe having some ice cream near the end of the week. Any ideas on how to best use an ice cream maker on the playa?

Ahh, you're in Portland...hang out with the Portland Burners much? Pete's 19th Hole? Fire Jam? Ohm? Jibba-Jabba? Going to see Alex Grey? I'm up there occasionally.
Anyway, if you follow the instructions I just gave, you won't need a machine. Machine's just another thing that'll take up room and need cleaning afterwards and can break down. I got that method from my teacher in Culinary academy, it works, it's fun, it'll cool you off on a hot day.

Yup I am in cascadia. I have not made it out to the 19th hole yet but want to soon. I have been making it out to the monthly fire jam and loving it. I am always at the Ohm on Sundays. If you are on Tribe let me know how to find you and I will keep you on the invites for when I spin or when my music project is performing. From what I have heard there is an Alex Grey event this weekend. I am not sure if I will be there or not but hopefully.

I'm not on Tribe but I see your posts on the Portland Burners list all the time. I've only been coming up from Eugene once a month, first weekend, because of the gas prices...it costs me $50 in gas to drive from Eugene to Portland and back. Gots ta be savin' up for the Burn, don'tcha know ;D
I was at the Fire Jam this past weekend, I was the chick sitting on the black SUV hood and playing around with a wooden seawolf stickhorse. My friend Todd was with me, he had his skull-headed-EL-wired walking stick with him.
I'm breaking my "once a month" rule this week because...well...it's Alex Grey! Definitely worth the drive.

You know this last Sunday was the first time I missed the firejam in a while and you were there. Normally we take our son and he loves watching the performance. I think after a heavy night of drinking the night before I spaced the fire. LOL It happens. I will let you know if I make it to Eugene any time soon.
