Hiking before BM
Hiking before BM
Hi, a friend and I wanted to go for an overnight backpacking hike before Burning Man. Can anyone recommend a hike/destination between San Jose/Santa Cruz and Gerlach?
We went to Yosemite last year (not related to BM) and that seems too far out of the way to get up to Gerlach.
I saw El Dorado National Forest on the map and it appears to be a good location, but I'm not real sure without the map.

good find!
Thanks! I was going by the green areas on Google Maps and for some reason this isn't shaded.

I'll check it out!
Might also be a good recuperation place on the way back.

But, as far as convenient, Castle Peak area, also, you can take the Soda Springs exit, and, head to Sugar Bowl ski resort, or any area up there (only a few minutes from I-80), the Pacific Crest trail crosses there, as well and there are some beautiful views and such.

i'll try to find something on Castle Peak. I'm sure there's a trip report out there somewhere. (At first I thought Castle Rock and possibly a haunted Stephen King connection.)
Almost anything along the PCT should be good. I'll check with a thru-hiker friend of mine. PCT + a lake/swimming hole within 8 miles and I'm there, assuming it's a generally secluded/private area.

You don't even have to leave the National Conservation Area. I understand there are three mustang herds, one donkey herd, a 19th century murder site and endangered trout there.

Hmm, maybe, but last year we stopped at my friend's sister's house in Carson City. Pretty much everything you get a hotel but free.
Also had one of those thirty million dollar stereo systems, with the turntable mounted directly to the foundation instead of the floor, all that stuff. I slept most of the time, on the couch and under the cat.

I think this is a great source for map downloads. Free from the USGS.
It is the map locator. The link does not work on this BBS (or at least I can't get it to work), so copy it entirely, from "http... /.do", place it in the address bar.
