Do's and Don'ts of Burning Man

Post by wildfire » Fri Apr 24, 2009 4:51 pm

Hello, I am a virgin burner but and not new to the festival/camping experience. I have read that feathered boas are a definite don't. Mainly from the stand point that they create a lot of mess. What are some other things frowned upon?

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

This question has been asked and answered both here and on the main BM site.

JK
Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Tiki Torches
Using regular toilet paper or baby wipes in the porta potties
Lades: Hovering when you pee and subsequently peeing all over the seat!
Unwelcomed naked hug
"Borrowing" aka stealing someones unattended bicycle
Peeing on the playa
Wearing glitter, sequins or anything else that might fall off and become moop
Leaving your trash around to be swept up by the wind
Walking around unlit at night
Uncovered Rebar
Interpretative dance
Coming unprepared
Asking questions in the forum that can be found all through out the website? ;)

Don't fuck every guy you see wearing a hat who says, "Hi, I'm Larry Harvey, why don't you fuck me?" Why? Because every guy and many women on the playa wear a hat and says, "Hi, I'm Larry Harvey, why don't you fuck me?" That is unless you're into that kind of thing then.....then have fun; but you won't make it past the Greeters gate.

Oh……and no fucking chickens…….then EVERYONE will call you a CHICKEN FUCKER……that is unless you’re into that kind of thing.

We're worried about you, Flatlander. But mostly we're worried about the chickens.

Should this be in Politics & Philosophy anyway?

So everybody gets squicked and squicked hard at Burningman. There's always something new to be squicked over. Prepare yourself for it. Look forward to it.

Talking of shoes - other than being nerdish, how would Tevas with socks hold up?

Sounds like Barbie has been on-playa once or twice. :)

Other than being nerdish, your socks will collect dust. Not bad if you have half a dozen pairs of socks. Frankly I haven't tried it on-playa, but I doubt if your socks will protect your feet as much as you would like. Let 'em breathe!

Then again, feel free to experiment. It is Burningman, after all.

To those of you with positive input, thank you. I know the rules and what not can be found on the main site, but i am looking for current social trends. What is popular this year and what was frowned on last year. What did you think was really cool, and what did you think the playa could do without?

Positve, negative...input.. you need input.. you can't pick and choose, this is eplaya.

I think we can do with more nudity. More tits and ass! Less stupid questions that make my head hurt

Ok, it sound like someone is doing a report for school or something. I think to best find out social trends, GO OUTSIDE!

(where is my larry hat and fuck sign anyway)

Actually, you should smile when you shake JK's hand, think of the miles that hand has seen, the work it has done, the pleasure it has brought! (probably soft as silk)

By positive input i meant useful thoughts, not sarcastic short answers. I hope everyone on the playa doesn't act towards strangers the way you do or i will re sell my ticket tonight. I wanted to go to BM because i thought i was choosing to be around positive people, not mean spirited jerks that feel the need to pounce on people because they think i can prey on weaker or dumber people. You know what i was asking, don't give me crap. Oh and i work about 70 hrs a week in the medical field so excuse me if i am too busy trying to learn to save your life than walking around noticing the trends. You deliver rotten goods to starving children

I honestly tried to express my feelings and respond to your question. Don't sell your ticket because of me, who the fuck am I anyway? I do find it offensive your statement about delivering rotten goods to children, although it makes me think you are a bit tired from that 70hr work week. But again, don't let anything I say mean anything to you. don't be thin skinned the playa dust will blow right through you.

It seemed that good folks had answered what you had asked yet you did not appreciate the efforts made.

Good Gravy, you're reading too much into the replies. Personally, I thought you'd asked for practical dos and don'ts, not what's in and what's out. I ignore social trends anyway, and am puzzled why you'd phrase it the way you did. But no matter. You got answers. Sort out which ones are useful or interesting, use that to refine your inquires and a discussion, and ignore the rest. Or have fun with them. If you're curious enough to ask questions, be aware enough to know which ones are trying to be funny and which are honest efforts at serious replies. You're a big kid now, don't let us hurt your feelings.

This is a very open board, you gets what you gets. These are some of the finest burners you'll ever meet in person. Relax and don't sell the ticket. You'll like us much better in the dust, i promise.

Gee, where is your sense of humor? How about this...

Do become radically self reliant.
Do learn how to use a search engine.
Don't be a self righteous weiner.
Don't camp near me.

I've been sleeping on the ground during my past BM experiences. I am thinking now of folding cots for me and my camp. What's the experience with these? Recommendations? Snarky comments?

DON'T Fuck On the Blow Up Mattresses ( unless you want to sleep on the ground the rest of the week)

DO Bring foam padding

ooooo and as far as Fashion goes...

DO bring a wrap to sit on IF your going to wander around naked

DO HAVE GOOGLES (sp?) WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES

DO BE comfortable in your outfit (what ever you choose to wear)

DO USE SUNBLOCK AS YOUR UNDERCLOTHES

DO BRING all Your Best Panties (heee teee heeee I wrote Panties)

DO BE A HAPPY CAMPER!!!

DO BRING YOUR BRIGHTEST Outfits

Do Bring that Brides Maid Dress You'll never wear again

DO Realize EVERYTHING IS IN

Do Realize thats 'cause we ARE ALL Freaks sooooo mostly we don't give a FUCK about whats IN or OUT

Do Check Simon of the Playa signature at the end of his posts- he has been keeping track of whats IN and OUT

I hope this clears some thing UP for YA!! Can't wait to see ya in the DUST!

2. passing out cheap trinkets out of a sense of obligation;
3. shirt-cocking;
4. not wearing some sort of lights at night: i.e. being a "dark-wad;"
5. not locking your bike up;
6. wearing angel or butterfly wings at a crowded dance spot;
7. not reading the Survival Guide at least 5 times before you start packing;
8. peeing on the toilet seats;

dont worry about what's passe or in vogue. Everything at Burning Man is immediately in vogue and so last-year at the same time.

dont worry too much about 'gifting" your first time. Volunteer w/LampLighters or at Center Camp or just let us remember how amazed we all were our first time by seeing the smile on your face.
