Hey Noe, welcome to eplaya.

You learned English just by watching TV???? Damn, I'm jealouse. I think I hold the record for taking Spanish 1, 2 and 3 at UCLA more times than any other student in their history and I still can't speak a word!

JK
Thank you JK

Yes, in fact... I was horrible in english when I was in highschool, but it just happened while watching movies, or series (I hate TV, there are a few things a like, but not much) using dictionary while playing Resident Evil -I learnt substantives-, or when I need to know what is this new windows error
But it is not the same with spanish I think.. I dont know if it's a little bit more difficult or not,
but there is not a Resident Evil in spanish

If you see our art car --- Peach's Verdant Box --- out on the Playa please flag us down and we'll take you for a ride. Peach's Verdant Box has three 20ft. tall flowers and dragonflies around the box. Who is I

Post by FuckingEh » Mon Apr 20, 2009 11:53 pm

I'm Alex, living in Winnipeg, Canada.

I first went to burningman in 1999 and 2000. I was the regional contact at that time for Manitoba. I haven't been back since. The first two times I went, there were some complications with my camp mates which left me some awkward situations. I've long wanted to give it a three times a charm to burningman again, but be more prepared for everything.

So I have my ticket. Here I go!

Why hasn't this thread been moved to the "introduce yourself" section ???

It would make things much easier for Jkisha.

You're right - I did find it a bit weird that the thread was "Q&A, Tips and Tricks>Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You..." .....is that a tip or a trick?!

Well.... I am Gizmostarr and this will be my first BM. In my mind, I'm already there.

LOL so true...but I never really liked this "group welcome" thead. I think every newbie should have their own thread in the "Introduce Yourself" section.

With that being said--to all those I missed in this thread...a big group shout-out...

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

I'm Kristi
I love nicknames so whatever works. I'm twenty && an army wife. I hate the war, I hate the fact that my husbands there and so does he but its money that we need. I've been looking at, researching and interested in Burning Man for five years now. I have not had any money or the time or the transportation to go. But now that I've got the money & everything for it I'm so excited. My husband is in iraq so we're hopefully gonna go in 2010.

Hi,
my name is Yovy. I'm from Miami, Fl. I got to a technical school down here where I study fashion design, I plan to move on to costume making once I learn how to put a garment together (I love costumes), hopefully when I do that I'll be able to get a job designing costumes and I'll be able to quit my food running job, which I really love/hate. This 2009 is going to be my first year, I'm flying solo from the south but I really hope to meet a whole lot of new people on this, my new adventure (which I hope will be the first of many). I like poi dancing (beginner level), by the way, I haven't seen anybody mentioning poi at burning man but I'm pretty sure there must be a whole lot of fire dancers out there on the playa. I also want to mention that I have come across a lot of great people on this board. I really hope I'll get to meet at least some of you in person. :D

By the way, if I misspell any word, please do forgive me, English is my second language and somehow I feel that the spellchecker is playing tricks on me :?

Yovy, the Fire Conclave is comprised of many smaller groups of fire performers -- all together over a thousand performers (including poi). You can get involved with them and perhaps perform prior to the burning of the Man. The weather got crazy in 2008 right before the Man was to burn, and the Fire Conclave performance was cancelled for the first time. But most years it's a pretty amazing performance to watch, and I'm sure even more fun to participate in. Ask around and I'm sure you can get involved in it if you want to.

Spellchecker only remembers what it knows and highlights everything else.
It also lights up for words that aren't capitalized, etc.
You can always search "define ______ " and get info.
There is a way to teach it new words, but I don't know it.

The names for the fire conclave performers are submitted weeks and weeks in advance. You must be involved with a local conclave well before you hit the playa in order to have the laminate to get inside the Great Circle. It is never on on playa thing... not unless you convince someone to cough up their pass. The performances are choreographed, many groups apply, not everyone is accepted. I'm on fire safety for the Utah Conclave, so I have had the opportunity to participate in that way.

But there is still plenty of opportunity to light up and spin other times and places than pre-Burn. Don't forget your wet towel for safety.

Sorry AntiM, I should have figured there were some very specific procedures in place for coordinating that many people.

People do get in last minute, but they are invited by a group already setup, or very, very good.
I know of one girl who joined on playa and speaks zero english.
She is not only good, but seemingly unique.
If you saw her, you won't forget.

He was not merely a wild man; he was part of the wild, one with untameable elements of life; in his veins ran the blood of the wolf-pack; in his brain lurked the brooding depths of the northern night; his heart throbbed with the fire of blazing forests.

a VIRGIN BURNER- in need of guidance

Post by curiousgezel » Sun Jul 12, 2009 10:21 am

Hi Im curious G,

this is the first year i am going to attend Burning Man. ive been wanting to go for years now and havent been able to go because of school. now we have a camper rented, art prepared, goggles etc. packed.... and then we found out that the person that was joining us who was involved with a camp would not be able to attend and we need to join a camp. Im not sure how to go about doing this. I dont really know where to even start. Is there a list somewhere where i can email the camps to see if they will take us in? what is the function of a camp anyway? how does one pick a camp? any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
My boyfriend has volunteered as a green dot. i am coming with an artist, architect, actor and psychologist.

Thanks

It recently came up that someone else thought that you are required to be part of a theme camp, so just in case you think that, that's not the case.

You and your friends are a camp if you want to be. The function of the camp is for you to decide, but its basics, especially for first timers, would include... camaraderie, looking out for each other's health, preparing and sharing meals, cleaning up, enjoying each other's company. Beyond that, camps can provide any number of services ranging from whimsical to essential services for the functioning of the city. People sometimes opt to join larger, more established camps because they have already worked out elaborate systems for handling food, water and waste; also there is some sort of larger community that you're instantly plugged into, with all its good and bad drama .... and the camp might provide a type of work that you want to be involved in. People sometimes opt to camp alone or with just a couple/few people because they know they can count on themselves or their few friends not to be slackers, and they like the thrill of just meeting all new people.

If you are still looking to join a larger camp, you can look around in this forum: http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=130 ... it's pretty late to be looking to join a camp, but who knows. You can always just set up your own camp and then, based on people you meet and work you like to do, decide to join another camp next year.

Hi I'm Alex.
A little about myself. In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey, I
can get bored in the flat field and I think my spaceship knows which
way to go to Phoenix--to find a start upwind.

If the references in the paragraph are all clear too you then..neat.

I'm from Connecticut. I think I first heard about Burning Man when reading the website of a religious radical saying it was a Satanic festival. So I looked it up then somewhere between 5-10 years later a friend of mine told me he was going.

I told myself if I didn't get into graduate school for next Fall I'd go to Burning Man.
I got all rejections so I'm coming! :-) :-/
It's doing a decent job or distracting me from my state of stagnation!

I'm either calm and thoughtful or inexplicably excited and prone to talking and moving around too much.
People who don't know me well usually have trouble picturing the opposite side of me exists. Friends who have known for a while seem to understand how my personality smoothly connects.

I majored in Philosophy in college, but an unfortunate side effect is difficulty entering into typical conversations of a philosophical nature without seeming outright pedantic.
But that issue probably wont come up at BM because the heat will likely wipe out all of my higher cognitive functions. :-)

I hope to see you there!
-Alex
