Been there, done that. got 'em both stuck. We found out that a 4x4 can dig a hole in less then half the time of a 2 wheel drive (which might only dig one hole, 4x4 takes it all down to the frame.)Ugly Dougly wrote:Try going out there with TWO 4x4's. I don't know any of these people but the pictures speak for themselvers. Notice that last photo the people choose to camp where they got stuck. (reminds me of the wagon wheel in the front yard was a symbol that the wagon had broken down there so thats where they built the house. Oh, excuse me, I drifted.

We had an fire engine stuck on playa in 1999 in late May, we got 2 more stuck trying to retrieve the first one.
We were crossing from 12 mile, to the Microwave crossing and hit a soft patch, threw it in 4x4, pushed it to the firewall and buried 44,000 pounds of truck to the axles. The first crew dumped their load of water, where it sat in hopes of lightening the truck by 20,000 pounds
Had to drive to Winnemucca and get 3000 feet of 7/16" cable in 1000' sections. It was a long, long night.
Wish I had pics, never have a camera around for some great stuff.

What you don't see in those pictures is the lonely set of foot prints that lead away from a stuck vehicle. The foot prints can go on for 1/2 miles sometimes.
Famous last words,
Hey, I got a winch on my vehicle, lets go mud wompin' on the playa and if someone gets stuck I can pull out the other. do you have 1/2 mile of cable for that winch?

Getting unstuck from around the dunes near Bordello was no problem, but the scrap wood I found along the UPRR track to lay under the wheels was, as I found out after carrying it a couple hundred yards, home to a number of black widows and some gigantic blue centipedes. Be careful out there.
