When is the earliest one can reasonably get there and the NHP will allow you to line up?

I have seen people camp on the playa right outside the BM boundary lines weeks before the event. There are hot springs on the north and east sides you can visit as well. They are closed during the event, but fair game otherwise.

You could line up right now, in fact.

Maybe you could hire a hippie to stand in line for you.

You can't "HIRE" a hippie. But you could tell them it is good for their karma, and have a hemp drum circle.

So, do the people who queue up to be let in at midnight set up their camps in the dead of night, or wait until morning? I'd kind of like to arrive at night (mainly in order to take it easier on my vehicle driving through the desert) but it seems like it'll be a bit more difficult to set everything up at 3am or whenever I finally get through the gates and find my spot. Not that that would be a deal-breaker, I'm just wondering.

last year i got there at about 5 pm on sunday. Finally got to our camp at 2am. It was my first year and i was SO overwhelmed by everything, i decided, "fuck it, I'm getting drunk" so i did and passed out in my truck. Then the next morning i woke up and saw a bunch more of our campers had gotten there and set up camp, so i went to work and got everything set up

We usually show up outside the gate around 9-10 PM and join the party. Gives us time to stretch, meet a few folks, go to Will Call if necessary. Someone will invariably have a sound system set up so you can dance to the trance.

By the time we get thru the greeting process it's usually 2-3 AM...no time to be setting up anything...who wants to? We just find an open place on one of the outer rings to park for the night, crash in place, then relocate the next morning. Some years we've been with a theme camp and made advance arrangements to have a spot to park...but still we usually need to adjust our position the next morning.

So, arrive, party, sleep, setup...roughly in that order!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
