Night Time Dust Storms

Post by Violet Boudoir » Wed May 06, 2009 10:29 pm

Be gentle with me, please. I am a virgin and this is my second post.

This may be my lack of meterology knowledge but have there been or are there likely to be dust storms at night? I keep thinking of waking up in the middle of the night (most likely O'dark Morning) coughing and hacking because my tent is full of dust due to a dust storm. Should I be sleeping with my googles and dust mask on?

now that I am writing this it sounds like a paranoid question. Perhaps I should just ziplock myself up at night. I could breath through a straw...

Hello Newbie -- you can read multiple posts about how to safeguard your tent against the all mighty dust. That said, you're going to get dust in your tent, you ass, your nose, your ears and any other place you think it can't reach. I've seen dust storms at night but usually not as bad as the day -- ok, I may be a little trashed at night and it doesn't have the same effect but usually the winds die down at night. Sleeping? No, you'll want to go out at night, and then sleep for 2 hours before the 100 degree heat hits your tent. You'll have a blast at BM -- just be ready for anything.

yes dust storms can happen at night not to often but it happens.
You don't need to sleep with them on but like water keep them close to you.

I remember getting caught during the Sunday night dust storm last year, when it started to rain a little. I didn't have my goggles with me and we ended up spending like an hour trying to get back to our tent.

That storm was intense.

The bottom line is this: just carry a dust mask and goggles with you everywhere you go. But you don't need to sleep with them on.

In 01 and last year I slept outside in a hammack.. Covered the bed with a king size sheet, pup tent style.. Put clips on eather end. kept it cliped closed all the time.. Catching clear weather to shake the sheet out now and then..

This year I'm going inside with a streacher style bed.. But will still use the sheet.. Also building a foam lined head box for a sound buffer..

Could add some tunes.. Naw, to much work.

There's usually a breeze that springs up before dawn, but that's not usualy that dramatic.

There was a morning wind Mon 06..

After driving all day and into the night.. I just through the hammack bed out and craped out. The fuck'en wind was trying to turn me over.. All I did then was move real close to the van, throw a small tarp over me and under the legs. Come sun up all the dunes were gone to the trash fence..

A small bird hoped out of a box van from Mich.. He hit the ground and just sat there.. You could almost read what he was thinking..
