EUREKA! Have ticket. YIKES! Only 16 weeks..

Post by Radiant Lunatic » Wed May 06, 2009 1:23 am

Wahoo!
'Tis my first odyssey to Black Rock.
I've been experiencing some sort of 'bouncy feet' syndrome ever since I bought my ticket.
Does anyone else have this? :P

Coming from New Zealand to Los Angeles, have reserved a camper van.
Any recommendations on a flea market or giant shopping place that would be open on Sunday between there and Reno?

Thanks & hugs.

Welcome to ePlaya and to the insanity we call Burning Man. Judging by your photo on your avitar, you'll fit right in! :D
There is lots of shopping in Reno if you prefer to wait for that part of the trip. The festival is two hours north of Reno and there is everything available in Reno. There of course is nothing for sale once you get to Black Rock City except coffee and ice (both block and chips)
I'm sure you've read the first timers guide already. Read it again and keep a copy by your toilet to read again.
See you on the playa......

Thanks for your welcome. ((cyber hugz))
I've read the forum posts, researched for months and still expect the unexpected.

Will spend next 4 months trying to get all this survival gear, costumes, performance stuff, etc, into 2 suitcases.
wah-haha!
The fun has begun. :)

oH MY GOWDDD ONLY 16 weeks... Welcome Radiant Lunatic!!!!!

Happy Feet are something that happens! Wait till next then you'll be wanting to jump out of your skin also!

Packing all your burn stuff into two suitcases is a PAIN! IF you can't get it IN (to two suitcases)-Mail stuff ahead its cheaper than paying the extra at the airport. annnnnndd don't say I'm going on a camping trip or the airlines feel the need to PULL everything out of you suit cases.
If I were to wish ANYTHING I'd wish I were ME!!

From the airport (I am presuming LAX)...

Post by fuzzy2k » Wed May 06, 2009 2:03 pm

... travel North on La Cienega Blvd to Melrose Avenue. It comes right after an odd mess of an intersection that follows a section of La Cienega called Restaurant Row beginning at Wilshire Blvd.

Turn right on Melrose Avenue and travel East to Fairfax. At the corner of Melrose Avenue and Fairfax is Fairfax High, and there is a swap meet there regularly on Sundays. They charge admission, but if you grab a copy of the free newspaper "LA Weekly" along the way and look, there is said to be a coupon that reduces the admission cost to 1 dollar.

I have never been to this swapmeet, but have heard good things.

Thanks to you beautiful people for taking time to share.
I will heed the warning about the airlines and will definitely visit that swap meet in LA.
Have copied the excellent directions.

Now to find some camp mates...

Another virgin! Yay!! OK. I give up. I am NOT going through this whole list flogging virgins virtually. It's exhausting and my fingers are tired from typing.
I'm gonna get y'all at Burning Man, though, in real time. There. I'm done. WELCOME!!!

Coming from a long distance camp I agree with shipping. I NEVER trust airlines with anything anymore. I got so sick of shit gettin lost I just fly with carry on now.

Yer not gettin everything you need in suitcases anyway... just get jumbo duffels at the least.

Denios is open on Sundays. Its costs a couple bucks to park. You need to get there early in the AM, since most yard sale vendors start packing up around 1pm. Theres a great produce market there also. Plus a couple of permanent tool vendors that sell tarps, clamps, bungees, rope, etc really cheap.
What other people think about you is none of your business.

What I hear is you are arriving in Los Angeles on Sunday and you need to pick up a bike and other camping gear, so you thought flea market swap meet would be good.

If that is the case, and you wish to get up to Gerlach as quickly as possible, you might want to NOT go to Farfax high school, It will take you all day just to get in and get out of that area. If you are taking I5 to I80 to reno then Denio's might be a much quicker stop. Here is their web site.

http://www.denios.org/

Also there is the Saugus Swap meet, opens at 6:00am I think..

If what you are looking for is camping gear, walmart is good and I think there are some other options for getting used bikes if that is what you need.

Why dd you need an Emergency Medical Technition for your shade structure?

I mean especially for your shade structure, they are pretty useful fellows in a general sense.

Thanks for the welcomes and info.
It's good to have lots of options for the big shopping spree.

I hope LA is easy to drive through on a Sunday morning, big city traffic freaks me out. Would love to find a passenger with good navigation skills to share the trip from LA. Anyone interested in that - please send a message.
(I'll post this invitation on the ride board closer to the event)

See you all soon.

You might also consider public transportation. I live north of Sacramento and the drive to L.A. takes 10 hours.

You could take Am Trak / train to Reno. You could take Greyhound bus to Reno. You could fly to Reno. Airline baggage is most expensive , then rail, then bus freight. Hitching a car ride can be the least expensive but riskier than the public routes.

When I traveled to Scotland in 1978 I bought all of my tickets before hand from a travel agency. Bus to New York, plane to Gatwick in England, rail to London, bus to Edinburg, and then I walked to apartment building that I had booked over the phone. I knew exactly where I was going, when, and how much it would cost.

Is there a gambler's express from Aulkland? Perhaps a casino is looking for New Zealand whales...

hi radiant lunatic! wow, all the way from new zealand ... welcome!

what are you looking for? i live near fairfax high, and visit the swapmeet often ... they have lots of clothes and jewelry and furniture and funky stuff... but not a lot of used camping supplies, if that's what you're thinking. traffic and parking are, indeed, a nightmare in these parts (i walk as much as possible)

do you arrive at LAX? if you're looking for a pretty drive, i'd take 395 ... it's a little longer and slower, but has some gorgeous scenery, while I-5 is just dirt dull... but fast, if you don't get bored to death.

how fun!

EMT - Electrical Metallic Tubing or Emergency Medical Technician. The Electrical Metallic Tubing works a lot better at holding up shade structures than do Emergency Medical Technicians. Ya need to feed the Techs.
