I usually don't bother to differentiate between Dems and Reps. This paper does;
"In June 2002, the liberal American Prospect magazine called California a "laboratory" for Democratic policies"
"In just a few years, Democrats had turned California into a state -- or as it's now known, a "job-free zone" -- with a $41 billion deficit, a credit rating that was slashed to junk-bond status and a middle class now located in Arizona. "
"Having run out of things to tax, now the California legislature is considering a tax on taxes"
"California was, in fact, a laboratory of Democratic policies. The rabbit died, so now Obama is trying it on a national level. "

Well, California is in the shitter again. They are broke as usual. Contra Costa county says that they're so broke that they won't be prosecuting anything but BIG crimes.

A San Francisco paper has examined the "multiple Listings" and says that the banks are hiding hundreds of thousands of foreclosures off the market. Reportedly, the banks are servicing the loans themselves.
Some areas of Oregon are talking about closing the courts, etc for lack of money.
California has a new ballot issue. It will fund the schools with $ 16 billion. The ballot measure doesn't use the word "TAX" even one time.
I can understand that teachers and the rest of the public sector doesn't want to lose any money. BUT, they can't expect to continue on the same when the private sector is completely trashed financially.
Keynesian economics demands that the public sector does tons of hiring when the private sector is depressed. Keynesian economics is a pile of shit. It demands an ever-increasing economic growth. Not in this world. Debt financing has hit the wall. All munis have been downgraded. It's over with but GOV is trying for one last postponement.
The legislature wants to add one more nail in the coffin of private enterprise. One more huge tax without consideration of what the effects will be. GOV will enthusiastically starve the goose that laid the golden egg if it will make voters happy for just one more month.
They may pump in some stimulus money. I'm sure that that will bring in loads of fiscal responsibility

" state legislature is asking voters to approve $7 billion in new taxes on May 19. According to recent polls, the legislature's tax, borrow and spend initiatives appear to be failing miserably."
"If California is unable to borrow to pay its bills, the State Controller can sell Registered Anticipation Warrants (RAWs). Investors will buy RAWs--and because it is a personal felony for the State Controller to fail to pay as cash becomes available,"
Personal felony,,, that sounds harsh. But, what if cash doesn't become available. Who is defining available?
Ca wants the federal GOV to guarantee it's debts. Kinda risky !!

Well 007, you called it. Ca wants to get TARPed.

The Govenator is calling for a $ 16 billion deficit. I don't know if they're expecting the big tax increase on the ballot to pass or not. All democracies fail because they spend too much.
GOV is trying to fulfill it's Keynesian mandate / destiny by creating jobs for everyone who is made redundant in the producing economy. As the increasing tax load destroys more of the producing economy, there is less and less tax revenue to support GOV.
GOV will lay off lots of workers. It would make more sense to lower wages across the board. It will be painful either way. Do we keep a good wage standard for a smaller % or do we keep a minimum wage for a larger % ?

The sacred cows cannot be touched. Prop 87, that would have taxed the state located oil companies - failed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_87
The oil companies gang banged it to death even though it once had majority support. The oil companies continue to make record profits. Time they had their taxes increased in the state, from which they are unlikely to move. So that deep-sixes the argument that "businesses will leave the state if their taxes are increased". Arnold is a plutocratic shill.

how to deal with it, though?
If their taxes are raised, will they not just pass it on to us?....I bet so.........
I agree, they won't leave......but, fuel will rise, and, we know what that does............
I wish there was a way around that, without socialism...........

The infection of business in government is nearly complete. Their crowning achievement was to install what looks like a liberal, people friendly guy in the White House. Nothing will ever get done to restore equilibrium in the system. Maybe rioting in the streets and work stoppages, but that will be met with brutal force. America may now slide toward uninhibited 3rd world status.

Cowboy, you will see work stoppages. After all, we're only utilizing our industrial base at 67 %. It's reliably expected to go down another 17 %. Reportedly Ca goes in the red $ 2 billion every month. OK, so ca is burning up $ 500,000,000 a week more than it takes in. State workers are so delusional that they think that their jobs should be funded regardless of what happens to the producing economy. Lawmakers are so delusional that they consider the producing economy an unlimited piggy bank that can sustain ANY kind of abuse and taxing.
Ca has mandated, through the California Air Resources Board, that all trucks must reduce particulate emissions. OK, that's cool,,, and necessary. CARB has given companies until 2010 to get new trucks. There is a retrofit program but, it's not workable. CARB also requires that all Transport Refrigeration Units be compliant.
OK, so a truck with a 20 ft box and a refer costs about $ 120,000 new. A compliant refer alone costs $ 15,000 to $ 17,000. Because of the nature of the delivery pipeline for fresh food, there is very little profit margin. Nobody in the fresh food business is buying new trucks. When 2010 rolls around, the non-compliant trucks won't be given [sold] registration.
The egg and produce distributors that I've talked to plan to just go out of business. I've also talked to towing companies, etc. They have no idea what they will do. The figure that they won't have any choice. They'll just go out of business.
I suppose that some companies with lots of capital will come in and take over. I would expect the price of eggs and produce to double. Ca doesn't care.

The governor will not touch the sacred cow of taxing state resident oil companies. We have Chevron, based here in Richmond and San Ramon. Time for them to pay their fair share. This is not a good time to pass their revenue losses onto the consumers and they know it. The politicians, both Republican and Democratic, are gutless shitbags or bought and sold souless douches. Fuck em all. The consumers will be pushed only so far and they start doing time honored things like small-to-moderate-to-large sabotages, traffic slowdowns (truckers), vandalisms, theft, maybe even tar and feathering. Wouldn't you love to see Larry Summers and Hank Paulson and Tiny Tim tar and feathered? Strategic strikes too. Plenty of em.

Chevron et. al. would just pack up and move to another location. Hell all they would have to do is change an address card with the number of offices they have worldwide.
Where I grew up there was a large car dealer on the edge of town- just outside the tax district. Every 5-6 years the city would get greedy and move the district.
That dealer would simply build a new dealership a mile outside of the city limits. at least 4 moves in my lifetime,
if theres money to save - they will just move.

There are a pile of refineries in the Bay Area- Richmond, Hercules, Pinole. Old prop 87 would have taxed oil exploration and recovery in the state. Why not bring that back and re-vamp it? Chevron ain't gonna move its refineries. Fat chance of that. That's what you tax, not their HQ.

Kisha, complaining and calling it are two different things. To ague and not do anything constructive is what's useless. I show up at city meetings, write articles in local papers, call my legislators and make videos. Anybody can do this and it's fun too.

As I understand it, I don't know as that will really be a big deal with the Welfare to Work program. To collect welfare in CA you have to work on local projects something like 30 hours a week to collect welfare. With the amount the welfare checks are that I would have qualified for it would equal out to be somewhere in the $3/hour pay range. They've made it more worthwhile to flip burgers than to collect welfare. I am going from memory here, and it's been a few years since I've lived there so things could have changed.can't sit still wrote:Well, reportedly, Ca is going to stop state welfare.
