How to get everything on the plane?

Hello! This is my second year, but I'm going to call myself a virgin for various reasons. The one that is most applicable to this post is that I didn't have to bring very much last year as I was there for a Very Short Time.

This year, however, I'm able to go for longer stay (still short by most standards at only 5 days). I'm also going by myself this year, so there's little hope for sharing.

I'm really trying to keep everything down to the minimum as I'm flying in. I will be renting a car, so once I'm there, space is available. As it stands now, I plan on bringing my tent in one package (big tent, plus mods for the environment). I will create a yukon pack to bring my sleeping gear, clothes, toiletries, etc. (pack made from the ground tarp I'm bringing and extra roping that I'll need). I'll probably bring a backpack or suitcase as well.

As a traveller, I tend to get by with a very small rucksack for extended travelling (6+ months). So this is killing me to be lugging all of this.

Can the more experienced give some advice on how to transport all of the needed items on the plane?

I know the two "easiest" ways -
1. Find someone going who is driving - I've tried, I'm in Dallas and there's not a lot of people going from here. :)

2. Buy everything once you're there - Let's say I have a $200 budget once I arrive. I'm assuming a significant portion of that will be food, water, drinks, etc. Plus, the less wasteful side of me want to not dispose of it in the end. So what I pack in, I must pack out and take home...

Except for crappy coffee from center camp and ice form the artica camps, you can't buy anything when you are there, no food, alcohol, etc.

Plenty of people come from Texas, try the rideshare here, or put an ad on Craigslist stating what you are looking for.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply buy "there" as in on the Playa. I meant "there" as in Reno.

As for the rideshare - did have an ad on there - it was overwritten... twice.
I'll do that again at some point.

However, rather than alternatives, I guess I'm hoping for tips to help lighten everything up...

Dehydrated foods will keep your load light. Mountain house and Natural High are two brands that I have tried and liked. Find a themecamp to join or someone you know to accept UPS shipment of gear/supplies. There was a dude that showed up nude BUT he had a camp to back him up just in case the begging didn't work out.

First & second bags are free. Third bag only $25.

Buy all bulky or heavy stuff in Reno.
Food, cheap coolers, water, rebar,tarps, tents?, etc

Thrift stores, Wallyworld, WinCo are your friends.

Find out the exact baggage allowances for different airlines, then go buy boxes in largest possible dimensions. This will maximize your volume, as opposed to duffle or suitcases.

Since you have months left - you can also ground ship yourself a package, dissasemble your bike, etc.

find a willing burner to let you ship to their house, or have held at the post office, yes they do this.

I have even had packages sent to hotels I knew I was going to be at.

I will see if I can hook up the haul ride from Austin, but shipping to postmaster is a good backup plan.

Its called "General Delivery"

Google it and all sorts of articles come up. Its a way to receive packages and mail at a certain post office location. Homeless people do it regularly, specify which post office or you are driving all over town looing for your package.

Of course you have to have ID, and they dont keep stuff forever. i think the limit is 30 days.

The biggest items will be your bike, shade structure if you have one, and your cooler. There will be cheap ($30-60) bikes available for pre-purchase soon for out of towners. Look for the links in Jackrabbit Speaks and buy one right away. Cooler and shade materials can be bought in Reno pretty easily. Naturally, things like food, water, fresh socks, all the rest can be found in Reno so there's no need to buy them where you are now and stuff them in a suitcase. There are dropoff points in Reno for the items you can't bring back home with you.

I'd drop the yukon pack idea - TSA may decide to look inside and may not know how to put it back together. Better to either buy a plastic trunk (I got some kickass ones at Fred Meyer for $25 each which are the max allowed luggage size) or scrounge a sturdy cardboard box the appropriate size. Be sure to weigh the big stuff - many airlines have a scale built into the counter and things get weighed as they're collected. You'll get tagged for extra fees if they go over.

I'm sorry Dork, but Reno is experiencing a severe sock shortage. The whole country is, in fact. You know how socks dissapere int eh wash? WE have now developed an e-sock that skips the middle man and dissapperes from the store shelves. What brave new world that has such socks in it.

If you choose to ship to a post office be sure to ship "general delivery" so it will be held. The P.O. will hold it for 30 days. Be sure to have your Texas address on the items. Check www.usps.gov and click '"locate a post office," probably in Reno or Sparks and check the phone numbers and call to make sure they accept "general delivery" as not all P.O.s accept "general delivery." My wife works at the post office in Carson City, NV where they accept "general delivery."

I've been trying all weekend to get my friend's snake to eat my solar flashlight. He wants nothing to do with it....

If I can't get this down him, I'm not sure the snake thing will work out.
