I can now access page two....I guess there's something on page one that my browser or something doesn't like. Although, even here my machine is reacting and the typing is slow..........I guess maybe it's loading the first page, in the background.......
I'll just have to catch up from here...........

I can say with a lot of sincerity, that I do not like Bob Marley music... anymore.
Went to Jamaica awhile back, and for four dyas we were stuck in Bob Marley perpetuity. About 10 songs played over and over and over and over from sunrise to sunset at the resort. After sunset? We got to listen to the house band play them 2 to 3 times a night.
"WE GET IT! BOB MARLEY IS FROM HERE! SO ARE A LOT OF OTHER TALENTED MUSICIANS! TURN THE FUCKING CHANNEL!"
I was into a lot of that same music, still groove on the Moody Blues and CSN/CSN&Y from time to time, but once I was made aware that Lemmy is God, it all changed for me musically...

Someone bogarting the joint?
Someone disturbing the meditation in the Ashram?
Someone who cut their hair and got a job with Dow Chemical?
The Ohio National Guard commander who issued live ammo?
War?
I believe the Hippies hated the inconsiderate, the unthinking, the unknowing, the complying, and the hostile souls.
What did the Hippies love?
I believe the Hippies loved the considerate, the thinking, the knowing, the responsible, and the calming souls.

Good questions.
This ol' hippie loves peace, love, rock-n-roll, nice people, gardens,
forests, hugging trees, hugging friends, hugging babies, hugging animal critters,
being totally green, living off the land. I still dream of joining
a commune, growing a communal garden, taking care of all the babies,
sewing hippie clothes, tie-dying hippie clothes, being the chief cook
and bottle washer. Throw in a tad of free love, wild orgies, and daisies
in my hair and I am eternally a happy woman.
WARNING: Do not touch the brownies unless you want a spiritual
experience that will last 3 days.

old guy, would you care to elucidate further on the difference between compliance and responsibility, and/or the difference between hippies and non-hippies?
i'm just curious ... i was still a wee thing in the 60's ....

The last verse of the Moody Blues song "Balance" answers your own question. Your choice was no accident.
"Just open your eyes, your eyes, your eyes, and wake up."
Let me take you back in time. A country boy, a smart boy wants to go to college. He can't afford it on his own, and his parents are poor. He decides to try to get into Westpoint for a "free" education. This is the era where crewcuts and slacks and narrow ties are common. Long hair, jeans, and beads were abnormal, even subversive. He wants to get along by going along. I am that boy.
I am permitted by my congressman to compete for a spot from his district. I go to the Presidio in San Francisco for testing and do well. But instead of this kid with an IQ of 154, an officers son is selected. So I go to nearest university at Davis, California.
The war is going badly. I join ROTC. I train as a ranger. I'm good at it. I'm a country boy. I live in a dorm. When the cops show up at the dorm, the sound of eggs splattering on the patrol cars is heard. There is yelling, and the sound of toilets flushing echos down the hallways. A typical Friday night.
Spring break is a time to get away. I go to Baja on a university van for the Department of Water Resources to check out the coastline. We start at Pt. Reyes and go south all the way to Ensenadas, Mexico. We stop at U of C campuses along the way and talk. The expert at Santa Barbara where the oil spill was says, he is a "Commune-ist not a Communist" That word held the same cache' that terrorist holds today.
We made our trip, came back and reported to the committee in Sacramento. Flash forward to before Picnic Day. We are in ROTC formation on the athletic field. The protesters squirt us with water from squirt guns. They throw flour on us. We stand at attention. We are ordered to parade rest. We snap to, and the protesters run. As they run bye, they see me. I'm the one who said we would exercise. They didn't know " We " was " Me ".
During the parade on Picnic Day, my dorm had the " Ghost Platoon ". We wore shrouds of white. I was in front, carrying the flag. But it was upside down and hung from a mop handle. I was complying and responsible at the same time. ( I enlisted much later on in 1973, and became a "non-com" but that's another story. )
I was at the campus theatre when I saw the image of the kneeling girl on the school paper. Headline was " Kent State 4, Guard 0". I thought to myself, why are the Guard carrying rifles instead of batons? Who thought they needed deadly force? That wasn't what we were trained to do. As a leader- in- training I knew that was wrong. Then I realized that the Commander was following orders someone gave him. He was complicit by obeying an unlawfull order. He should have taken responsibility by stacking arms and collecting ammo.
Flash forward about 40 years. Here we are again. The cycle is turning. The young want to know what we know. We is Me. We are one, you have to find out on your own.
Gitmo and Abu Garabe are the same symptom of the same problem as firing on civilians at Kent State. Depersonalization of the "enemy". MacNamara never took responsibility, nor does the former Vice-president under Bush, He who remains nameless.

Oldguy:
that is an interesting story, thanks for sharing.
It elicits many questions in my mind, and thoughts. It is the essence of why I read.
I may or may not agree with you, or understand, but, it is thought provoking.
Thank you for that.
One thing that would help me, here, to try to understand:
did you join ROTC/military for the free education/benefits, or, to do what the military does? I could even see both in play, but, wonder, which was the main reason, if either?

actually, the complete thought in the song is
"just open your eyes, and realize, the way it's always been" ... it's about listening to others, and understanding.
thank you for your response, and you are correct, we all need to open our eyes, and keep them open... i fear that too many have closed them lately, trusting our new leaders...
but we also have to listen to others, and try to understand other perspectives. your story is not everyone's story.... it is valuable, but not universal.....
BTW that oil rig was still leaking oil in the early 80's, when i was at UCSB ... we would watch the slicks move on shore ... you couldn't take a walk out there without getting it all over your feet. i wonder if that's still true ... i s'pose it is.

ygmir, I was attempting to make the best deal I could for myself. Enlightened self-interest, I suppose. I thought as an officer, I could help myself in some way; like the exec officer in the movie about a pink submarine. But I never made Lt.. I dropped out and enlisted 3 years for duty station of choice. I was a sport parachutist, so I went airborne to Ft. Bragg, N. Carolina via Ord, Gordon, and Benning. I used up my GI Bill after discharge and got my degree. I could have stayed in for a career but did not. I traded 3 years for an education. I chose Carolina over 'Nam.
littleflower, my situation was somewhat unique in that I was in the reserves at the same time as I was protesting the war. Most people chose a side but not me. I could see both veiwpoints. I guess I was a man in the middle and openminded. Some would say lukewarm, neither hot or cold, if you get the biblical reference. I would say reasoned, considerate, and responsible. Doing the right thing and all that.
Peace!

Regardless of your duty station, thank you for your service both in the military and in standing up for what you believe.
My brother was in ROTC at UCSB when the Bank of America was burned.
By the way - McNamara actually admitted a lot in his book which was only released a few years ago.

Yes, you're right. Hate is too strong a word, actually the words should be more....like......."are repelled by" shirtcockers. I've read a lot of stuff by those VERY angry guys over on the "hippies" thread and I'd bet at least one of them is a shirt cocker. It's the one who is so fixated on his penis.
Oneeyedickhead......or something like that.
