Hey mykidsdaddy! I posted that we were going up there on Saturday to go to Leadville etc. and would stop by some time that day. Well we were on the side road to Leadville and caught a rock on the front differential skid plate that cracked the front axle tube and lost all the front differential oil right there  :( :x  . Limped back to Gerlach and waited 2 1/2 hours for a tow truck from Fernley so we had nice but shitty day.

Bummer Catman!!! Question??? Where is Leadville??? I gotta get out more...that's all there is to it! Had some guys in the store on Friday eve that were going to a place called Wall Canyon. It sounded like a pretty cool place to go. I am thinking we are going to do a little exploring on Fathers Day. Even if we just go to the places and SEE THEM. Then we will know what/where people are talking about! Hot Springs, fishing holes, Black Rock Desert, Playa, Burning Man...

Yeah, if/when I get back to that part of the country, I would like to do some exploring. I think that some of the more famous hot springs might be on private property (I seem to recall that Fly Springs is). Not certain where the other stuff is-- although on line maps are available.

Anyone have a report on how the playa is?

You might want to contact some of the folks that put on the event this weekend.

Here is a quote from Chuck dodd's "Guide to getting around in the Black Rock Desert & High Rock Canyon. Copies of this book should be sold at the Empire Store.
.................Only two towns are actually in the area. Empire, easily identified as a US Gypsum town, produces enough sheetrock to serve northern Nevada. Gerlach is a railroad town with watering holes for thirsty humans, not to mention the fine food that accompanies. Cedarville, California is just outside, west of the northwestern corner of the area.

Ranching, a long-standing traditional business in the area, still challenges the hardy folks who provide a link from the romanticism of our western cowboy past with the reality of today's work on fence lines, on horseback as well as in pickups. Hunters spread out into the area in their seasons, seeking pronghorn antelope, Chukar, and other elusive game.

There is modern recreation in the area as well as modern challenges. The world land speed record was set by a jet powered "car" in 1997, traveling a supersonic 764 miles per hour. Amature rocketeers are launching into the stratosphere. Land sailors bring sails to the playa. History buffs explore the trails of covered wagons and early explorers as well as what remains from other activities of long ago. Rock-hounders search for semi-precious stones, and people come just to camp and enjoy the powerful, peaceful sense of isolation that can be had in this primitive place almost undtouched by humans.

And then, of course, there is that thing called the "Burning Man."

As I said, it is awesome.

All of it.
You also might want to talk to Planet X and see if you can perhaps sell some of their pottery. (just a thought)

Thanks for the info! When time permits, I will get out! And we do have some samples of Planet X pottery in the store! They do really nice work. Thanks.

I just finished building a website for the store. It's not perfect...but it's my first attempt. I will make it better as we go.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Leadville is ghost town about 35-38 or so miles north of Gerlach on CR34 and about two miles west of 34 via a " HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE road  . Should have had my wife spotting. Two excelent maps are the Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer ($19.95) and the Nevada Road & Recreation Atlas ($22.95). Both available at book stores and even supermarkets and WallyMart and they both list Leadville as well as other sights. The bummer is, we took the exact same Jeep on that same road about 3 years ago with no problems. :o

And you don't really need a 4x4 on the side road to Leadville. CR 34 is graded dirt all the way to Vya and that pizza looks good too 8) .

Still workin' on gettin' pizza thing goin'!

Good news...We got our walk-in doors back today! Not damaged...definitly in usable condition!

Now...all we need to do is find compressors for the refrigeration and we are in business! There are old compressors under the store but we don't know if they are usable. They were abandonded and all the piping was re-routed to a central location where it looks like(by the wiring) there was only one compressor chilling down all the walk-ins.
The previous tennant took that unit with him when he left. It just sucks not knowing if the old units were working when he abandoned them or...if they crapped out one at a time and he finally said screw it and bought a nice unit!
I can only imagine what a refrigeration tech would charge to drive all the way out here.

Glad to hear you got the doors back !!

Did you have to "trade" for them ?

Check out this CL ad......

It was more of a court ordered "exchange" rather than a trade. Apples and oranges...
Yeah...he came and picked up his signs and a bunch of personal belongings he left behind. The doors were in the mini-storage lot a stones throw from here!

Now...we need to see if we can get the walk-ins cold!

Thanks for the CL link! Those look like the units under the store. I don't know zip about refrigeration other than principals! I wouldn't know it those old units were gold or lead!!!
 I need to look into this further.

It seems like any apples and oranges would have been rotten at this point in time. but I guess if a court orders it..
