I, for one, am pretty miffed that this thread has gone this far, and as yet, nobody has been able to satisfactorily describe what the Playa conditions are going to be like for the week of this year's Burn. Come on, people! Let's get serious! There are less than 100 days 'til The Man burns, and we REALLY need to know the weather conditions we'll be experiencing...Myself, I'm particularly inquiring about Tuesday afternoon, as well as Friday around 6 PM. Isn't there some kind of google or twitter for this?

I am however expecting someone to come back from The Black Rock Rendezvous with some recent pic, hopefully they did a depth check on the amount of packing ....... if not, I will be sure to do so in the next three weeks sometime.

Seriously.. expect some dust with a lil more dust and some dust to top it all off. There has NEVER been a Burningman on the playa without dust. Did I mention to expect dust, oh yeah.. its also gonna be hot. Expect alot of heat with a lil more heat added. At night expect it to be cold, some nights colder than others.DrPeffer wrote:I, for one, am pretty miffed that this thread has gone this far, and as yet, nobody has been able to satisfactorily describe what the Playa conditions are going to be like for the week of this year's Burn. If there is ever a year without enough dust just make sure to bring either a big push broom or leafblower to help make some more.

Really, now, why hasn't anyone thought of preserving the playa under a nice layer of blacktop or concrete? That way the desert can be kept in a pristine condition, safely sealed away, for future generations.

On Saturday May 23rd, while we did'nt go on the playa, we did go up highway 34 for about 45 miles past Gerlach. We saw several campers and just as many vehicles being driven on the playa and they were'nt kicking up much dust. There appeard to be even less wind blown dust. On Friday evening we had a real gullywarsher complete with lightning, hail, flooding, and a six hour power outage etc. Don't know how much if any of it vetured north toward the playa. At the railroad crossing the edges were kinda gray in color
Well, you gotta fill the cistern somehow! (What, didn't you know about the cistern? It's there for all the Burners, so that they don't have to bring so much water! Sheesh!oneeyeddick wrote:The drainage ditch would reset the record for several different things, like for one the LONGEST DRAINAGE DITCH IN THE WORLD !!!

Playa conditions are flat, with continued flat, a little off white in color, surrounded by mountains.DrPeffer wrote:I, for one, am pretty miffed that this thread has gone this far, and as yet, nobody has been able to satisfactorily describe what the Playa conditions are going to be like for the week of this year's Burn. A little to early for Playa condition reports yet, let it bake out some in June and July before you can expect a desent report.

Yay...Playa "Magic Shell"!!! Butterfinger flavor? Anyhoo, we just went to the Black Rock Rendezvous, and aside from being not very Burner friendly, it gave us a nice preview of Playa conditions. It really looks great so far, dry, cracked and hard-pan...as it should be! Keep sacrificing those buckets of Kentucky Fried Chix, it's working! Now, if only all the motor cross assholes won't keep scarring it up! On second thought, spare the KFC and sacrifice the bikers!
Okay...Now, a friend just emailed me and said that there's a B-I-G, super-heinous dust storm expected on Wednesday Sept. 2 around 11 AM, that's apparently not going to let up until about 7 PM. 'Worse than last year's Monday storm', he says. Has anyone else heard about this? I might have to back out of coming this year if this is true.

If only there was a way to forecast that far into the future.....
Your friend is fucking with you....just GO !!
......does anyone else understand the reference to Kentucky Fried Chix in Shaman KKK's post above ?
It is escaping me...........

I did, in fact, forget the cherries-- and the whipped cream! The bacon is a side order item.goathead wrote:You forgot the cherries.BAS wrote:I predict a harden chocolate surface over ice cream, atop a hollow chocolate cake with a center of molten chocolate! Mmmm!
OR would you prefer
BACON?
(Actually, the Butterfinger "Magic Shell" might be a possibility, too. It is just too early to tell.
BTW: KFC was in the movie Major League.

Naw...D'ya THINK?
I'm having a hard time believing that people are taking me seriously here, this of all places. Wondering if I'm getting played, myself : ) My point: Of COURSE nobody knows what the Playa conditions will be like until a few weeks from now, when maybe, some kind DPW souls or others will drop a line to report. And anyway, what does it REALLY matter? And what's more, of FUCKING course nobody knows what kind of weather we're going to have. Could be gorgeous, could be heinous. Probably will be a little of both. That's why the smart Burner prepares for anything and everything.
I think its funny how some people (in the US, at least) have become dependent on real-time, hyper-focused information, such that things like mystery and unpredictability are nothing but terrifying. And so, I thought I'd make fun of them.

it's absolutely true.DrPeffer wrote:Okay...Now, a friend just emailed me and said that there's a B-I-G, super-heinous dust storm expected on Wednesday Sept. 2 around 11 AM, that's apparently not going to let up until about 7 PM. the DPW has regularly scheduled dust storms all throughout the week.
That's what those big fans are for.
It's really just a matter of giving people what they come to expect from "Burning Man" and would actually feel cheated, or gypped somehow if there was'nt an air filter clogging, nose gremlin making, ubiquitous sand storm (play darude NOW) so they can live to tell about it.
in past years, the porta pottties at center camp were actually topped off with extra yum yums to give that whole above the rim, hovering experience we all cherish.
Lord knows that in the past couple of years, assholes were actually hired in vegas, at the unemployed comic store, given bull-horns and a bag of meth and a $100 and let loose on the open playa to give it that special "feel".
some are still there, wandering the eastern fork of the playa, their rfid tags lost or worse.
most of the hippies are just SAG extras from L.A., and the coffee they serve in center camp is fucking folgers, not like anyone would ever notice.
so relax, anything unexpected has been planned with the utmost care.
Frida Be You & Me
FOLGERS?!! Man, I was told it was playa dust cut with the crust from the porta potties! And that was from a supposed insider. Now I feel gypped!Simon of the Playa wrote:most of the hippies are just SAG extras from L.A., and the coffee they serve in center camp is fucking folgers, not like anyone would ever notice.

Now you all are aware that there isn't REALLY a playa, right? BM is held at the motel 6 in Reno -- it's just a shared acid trip that makes people see dust and blinkie lights and such. If you're in the lobby the tile floors turn into a good crusty playa -- the shag carpet in the rooms are loose dust -- those serpent thingies you hit with you bike are actually just people passed-out in the halls...
