HAIR! how do i wrap long hair?

last year was my first burn, and i saw lots of women (and men) with colourful cloth and yarn and things braided or woven into their hair or wrapped around it.

what have people used to do this, and can anyone tell me how to do it?

alternately, how have people with long hair kept it not feeling/looking like the tumbleweed mine was last year?

They are a salon that does the kind of braiding you are talking about.

The best hints I can give about long hair are:

1) Braid or keep hair up or in a pony tail = less exposure to the dust
2) Use a leave-in conditioner after shampooing on the playa

accept your new playa-do and embrace it! :) I kept mine in a ponytail and didn't even try to comb it (would have just made it worse), wore a cowboy hat for shade, wigs at night, and ignored the buildup of playa on my scalp...I'm blonde, so it matched well, lol... A friend had strips of cloth woven into her hair before the burn, it looked great and held up really well, but she said it was expensive and took hours to put in and take out after. I have really fine hair so I'm afraid those kind of braids will damage my hair, I'm gonna go with the cowboy hat again this year and some cyber-falls for nighttime - lots of them on eBay.

There is something, I believe it's called a "hair sock" that goes over your hair and keeps it from getting too fouled. Or fowled too. Got to be careful of the playachicken.

I think what you are looking for are called hair falls. I actually just bought a set for this years burn from the Sisters of the Moon etsy shop and am really happy with them. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5600808

The whole idea is to put your hair up in buns then attach the hair falls to the buns. I've found that keeping my hair in braids or pigtails is the easiest way to manage it and keep it from turning into playa dreadlocks, which it really wants to do.

thanks for all your suggestions, including the one about bacon, hmm, that would probably keep the hair soft as well.
retrodiva looks cool but i live far far away from there. the hair falls look like they'd be good except do they stay in place?
i've found some youtube videos of people either wrapping their hair or making falls... not sure which way i'll go yet now that there are so many options!

The hair falls attach with elastic hair bands. So to attach them you just wrap the elastics around the buns then flip the falls over the buns to cover them.

We did silky wrapped dreads with faux hair called Kanekalon. I bought minein Reno from EnSoul, and it's really inexpensive. It's synthetic, fire resistant (but it can melt if near open flame) and looked awesome under the black light! It took about a full day each, about 18 hours total, and I needed a friend to help me, so we braided each other. They look like this but just know that my first set added 4.5 POUNDS of hair to my scalp and made me miserable for 3 weeks. The thick ones do look wicked cool, but thinner braids are easier to sleep on and give less headache...literally.

I wore mine for 2 months before they had grown out too much, and they were a blessing on the Playa. I rinsed with a diluted shampoo and squeezed dry. Very refreshing on a hot day! You may notice a bit of dandruff (freaked me out!) but it's because you're not massaging the scalp like you do with regular shampooing...so make that diluted shampoo Head & Shoulders, and you're golden!

my hair is thick and past my butt. I braid it tightly down the back and wear the sleeve of a t-shirt on my head. this has served me well for ten years.

My grandmother braided her long hair. She would part in the middle, then do high pigtails ala Pippi Longstocking. Then she would wind them around into buns ala Princess Leia (secured with pins). She would, sometimes, braid in cotton strips and wrap them Pioneer / Indian style. When working ouside she wore a bandana, or croched snood ; in the Summer, she wore a long face sunbonnet or cloche' hat. I would think cornrolls or plaited extentions would collect dirt like a dustmop. If you wrapped the overall braids completely, you could rinse your scalp and still keep your hair clean like the pioneers.

cornrows/extensions are the way to go!! (in my opinion)...10 years in the desert and counting... first year - playaMOP!!!...my hairdresser/sister said "NO MAS!!"....braids ever since...choose colors (helps with costume containment), braid, wash once at BM (shower more often, but shampoo once!)...revel/explain in deFaultia (I keep mine in for 3 months, and I teach in public schools), enjoy......
