I would say that NOTHING you expose to the playa environment will be the same again. My tent, my sleeping bag, my ThermaRest, my backpack...all of them have had a grimy coat of white since I first took them out there, no matter how much I scrub and wash. It's not bad, but it's something to take note of so that you aren't pissed off upon returning home and finding that your playa souvenirs won't go away.
My school brought a lot of things back from the playa last year. A lot of it was immediately shoved into storage, so it still had that layer of dust on it until just yesterday when we pulled it out for cleaning.
Everything was wiped down with rags that were dipped in a mixture of vinegar and water. I had seen one girl cleaning things with just water, but the mix was a lot more successful.

Hot damn, thanks for the tip! Then again...I'm not sure if I WANT to get rid of the lovely coat of white that my camping equipment has developed. In fact, I am quite certain that I don't. Every time I open up my tent, it feels like I am back on the playa. :D

Am I the only person here whose favorite smell has become playa dust? I am quite certain that I am not.

Me tooo! This will be my first BM but have camped at the playa previously! We were out there last May. I still smell the dust every time I turn the heater on in my truck.....ahhhh 8)
I'm taking the whole week after BM off so I can clean bikes/vehicles and our trailer.

Cool - I've never been to the desert. I wandered into Nevada when visiting California (walking around Lake Tahoe), but we only stayed long enough to get sunburn. I'm planning on lathering on the sunscreen this time.

Funny thing is that I won't have time to adjust to the outside world after BM. It occurs during my first week of school, so I'll be playing catch up as it is. At least it's a school sponsored event for me. :D

This is one of the greatest things I love about living here. Lake Tahoe is about as polar opposite from the Black Rock as you can get. The cool thing is they are only a few hours apart.

Good for you! Too many of my friends use the "oh, but it will be during the first week of school!" excuse to not go. Then again, I got lucky because I'm on the quarter system, so my classes start at the end of September...giving me the opportunity to stay a week longer...working on the playa...breaking down camp equipment...and picking up garbage...

...maybe the quarter system isn't so great after all. :P

I sort of know what you mean about the quarter system. I have friends in the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and they go by quarters while I go by semesters. When one of us is on break, the other is not - invariable, the other seems to be having major exams, in fact.

But I am posting today to share! I have finished my tutu, in its glowy glory. :D

I found a string of 8 solar powered LEDs to sew into the tutu... because visibility is a good thing, particularly so on the playa!

Pray Tell, what manner of school has a sanctioned Burning Man trip?

Does this earn you academic credits or is it just an enrichment activity?

Enrichment, more or less. Last year a club formed with the intention of going, and they actually did it. Most of the members seem to be art students.
To my knowledge, California University of Pennsylvania is the first college to back and even fund students heading out to the playa.

Apparently, there's a town in Pennsylvania called California. Sort of like Holland, Michigan.

Yep, it's a real school... university status and all. Apparently, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri all have cities named California, too.

I almost find it fascinating that you didn't believe the school existed. 0_o

And as far as posting pics on the interweb, I think I'll try to stick to putting clothed images online. If you're lucky, though, maybe I'll run around topless at the festival. I just hope I don't get sunburn.

I believed that it existed - I was just rather confused and amused by the seeming contradictory nature of the name.

Those of us who live in the state are so innundated with stuff about the University campuses (all 10) and the 19 or 20 of the Cal States, that it just sort of boggles our minds that we have to know more than 30.

I think you can see that you're asking a lot.

I'm not concerned with you being aware or unaware of its existence. It was the disbelief that surprised me.

Example: Whereas I may not be aware of a brand of cheese that is pineapple flavored, I don't find it all that shocking that it may exist.

Pineapple cheese on raisin bread was one of my favorite childhood sandwiches.

So... what are the chances I could commission you to make a tutu for me? :P
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose. But you shouldn't pick your friend's nose.

I'm not sure... it's not they're tough to make, but I'm spending a lot of time on other things; plus the chances that we might not find each other there.
But I could tell you how I made mine.
There are many many sites with instructions for no sew tutus:
http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/no_sew_tutu
http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/h ... e_a_tutu_2
http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/no_sew_tutu_2
Essentially, you tie the tulle around an elastic band, in slip knots.
The only difference with my tutu is that I attached solar lights to it.
I got my set of lights here:
http://www.antonline.com/antonline.php? ... tcraft+LED
They can be attached by hand sewing, or probably even a hot glue gun.

Or, you could give the instructions to a good friend and get them to make it. Good luck with your tutu!
