Hi, I'm Alex from North Carolina
I'm planning to go to Burning Man sometime in the future and almost definitely when I turn sixteen and can drive there. I'm about to turn fourteen and I like to plan way in advance for this kind of thing. My question and I'm not sure if this is even in the right section is whether a bicycle like this one http://www.fiveflagsmotorbikes.com/gascruiserbike.htm would be legal on the playa.
Thank you in advance,
-Alex
Thank you in advance,

Wow, what a great setup on that bike you have posted. A long long time ago, when I was your age, I would ride a bike that had a gas engine over the front wheels, it was so cool, I loved anything with wheels that would let me get some speed going.Alexkms wrote:I'm planning to go to Burning Man sometime in the future and almost definitely when I turn sixteen and can drive there. There was a discussion about mopeds awhile back. I have no idea if they are legal. You might search that term.
Also, of course, check this:

Alex, welcome to eplaya, good that your preparing far in advance for what can be an arduous journey. But unless you have a designated elder, you can't get in alone until your 18. But it's never to early to start hydrating
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

I was wondering because my leg muscles aren't very strong and I'd imagine that peddling a regular bicycle would be exhausting for me in over 100 degree weather. Even in 60 degree weather biking isn't my strong point. I'm a good walker but I've never been in such hot weather before so I'm really not sure how I'll get around if it sucks to much life out of me. I don't see why they would ban it though as its pretty much just a bike, even though people can be reckless I don't think it would be dangerous or even that noisy.
I wonder if the designated elder would have to be related, I really don't think my parents would be up for that type of thing.

Yeah, maybe. But I still don't think that that kind of weather change for me will do any good. No matter how strong I am by then I still think I'd prefer something with a motor. Hopefully go peds and stuff like that won't be banned even if they don't have a seat they still would work better for hauling stuff. If that won't work do you think that this will? http://www.extremescooters.biz/scooterx ... t-dog.aspx
It looks to me like a go ped, but I'm not exactly an expert. The only difference I see is that this doesn't cost a fortune, and the go peds do. The seat is detachable and I'd take the seat off at Burning Man because of the seat and motor thing.

Sorry if I sound a little grumpy by the way, I have a bad habbit of doing that on the internet, especially on forums. Its just hard for me to say something in a way that other people will understand what I am trying to say, and it comes off as me being unappreciative to you guys even though your just trying to help.

You sound just fine, Alex. We don't make the rules, we just nag you about them.
The elder thing: can be a guardian:
That's from the FAQ on the main site:
http://www.burningman.com/whatisburning ... at_is.html
The scooter is fine, although you may want to do some research about muffling the engine; they get loud and annoying to others. The main thing with the "no motor" is that too many people were crossing the line into mopeds, vespas and even motorcycles. I can't pedal a bike myself, but MyLarry does the legwork on our two person four wheeled bike. A recumbent may do well for you perhaps? Takes less legwork.

The heat? I see you are in NC. Trust me, your humid heat is far, far more soul sucking than the dry heat in the desert. I hate humid heat, but do alright in the desert most of the time. Everyone laughs at "it's a dry heat" but it is true, it is different. I'm betting the altitude will get you before the temperature. Learn to hydrate and to love a big-ass shade hat.
The elder thing: can be a guardian:
Q. How much is a ticket for my child?
A. Children 12 and under accompanied by a parent will be admitted for free. Children between 13-18 require full-price tickets. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 21 years of age. If you plan to bring a child, please read the Kids at Burning Man survival guide.

Hi Alexkms!
Unless you have some kind of physical ailment that makes walking more difficult for you, you should be fine riding a bike. I had not been on a bike in almost 25 years but I did not have any difficulty in riding one last year. Aside from the "sand dunes", and I think that the little motorized scooters had more problems with those than people on bikes did.

Box Burner, you're the first person I've heard say they did okay on a bike last year.
Tell us more about that.
How wide were your tires?
Parts of nc are very cool, though humid.
I don't know about chapel hill.
A hot year on the playa feels like a hot year in memphis.
I'd rather be in san francisco.
But some years on the playa have been very comfortable, cooler than home.
I used to use a bike for transportation, and I don't think I would have found it easy even then to do as much riding on the playa as I want to do.
Maybe it depends on how much one wants to travel out there?
You arrive more or less exhausted (over 2000 miles) and then you are adapting to the altitude in 0% to 20% humidity.
There is a huge benefit to adapting to altitude early.
Some people are content to walk out there.
Everyone's approach has a different style to it.
