volunteering...
if anyone finds out anything useful please pass it on.
I was co-lighting designer for last year's temple and would really like to help with this year's temple (lighting or whatever)

Fire Of Fires – The Temple
by David Umlas, Marrilee Ratcliffe, Community Art Makers - Austin, TX
As human nature and perception have evolved, whether we feel with our
heart, question with our mind, or attempt to explain our reality ...
fire has been at our center. At the center of our structure is the
fire. Encased in thirty-two vertical feet of clear polycarbonate
sheeting, nine gas lamps come alive as a tornado of flame as
participants interact with the Temple. From one flame, all lamps can
be kindled: fire imparts infinitely without loss. From a single,
human desire all branches swirl out and find form upon a tangled bank.
I was Born OK the 1st Time....

I signed up for JRS about 6 weeks ago and haven't gotten a thing. Perhaps there hasn't been a new bulletin? Would someone mind forwarding me the current newsletter?chiefdanfox wrote:Subscribe:

If you have a few email addresses (as many of us do), it may be going to one you aren't checking very often.

Thank you much! I logged into the mailing list page and I was confirmed for dpw-announce but not burning man-announce. Maybe I forgot to confirm?Ugly Dougly wrote:If you have a few email addresses (as many of us do), it may be going to one you aren't checking very often.

2009 Temple: FIRE OF FIRES
Here is a link to the PDF proposal for this year's temple, by Community Art Makers.
http://temple.communityartmakers.com/temple.pdf
I have to say, this design is magnificent.
Surrounding the main structure are smaller temples that represent different cultural styles.
BEAUTIFUL!

Well, If we did that, there would be the issue of the temple being trotted upon by dwarves.Marscrumbs wrote:Maybe we can do a mini temple like in Spinal Tap

Whoops. Edina was earlier.
The whole Minnesota "our climate sucks too much to actually experience it" thing was a big push that way.those wacky out wikipedians wrote:Southdale Center, commonly known as just Southdale, is a shopping center in Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. When it opened in 1956, it was the nation's first fully enclosed, climate-controlled shopping mall and the first to house rival department stores under one roof. As of 2008, much of the original Southdale structure is still in use, as well as later additions to the building.

or maybe it's the town of Edina, trying to steal our thunder...
either way, someone's gonna get their ass kicked...we dont take things like being the origin of the "Indoor Mall" lightly.

Is this the same designer as last year? Or someone new?SUPPORT THE 2009 TEMPLE PROJECT!
This just in:
"The Temple for 2009 is being done out of Texas for the first time
ever this year, and there are fundraisers for this monumental project
going on Thursday night May 28 in Austin and Friday night May 29 in
Houston. The events will feature the Texas premier(s) of The Temple
Builder, a lovely doc made by Ireland's Purple Productions (Dust
Devils) and Austin's Gone Off Deep Productions (Beyond Black Rock), as
well as original art and photography of the Temples over the years
from a slew of talented contributors.
David Best, the originator of The Temple projects will be on hand for
both, as will Dave Umlas, the fearless leader of Community Art Makers
out of Austin, who is spearheading this year's Temple, "Fire of
Fires." If you'd like to contribute to the Temple project either in
person or virtually, more information can be found at:
http://www.communityartmakers.com "
What is the extent of David's involvement?

it's not thread drift...the clock of nations is a center spire with 12 rotating gondola or platforms that represent the nations (or continents) of the world.
the new temple design is a BLATANT rip-off and borders on art-theft if it is not credited as an inspiration.
look thru the pdf, then look at pictures of the clock and you tell me...

i'm not just being my regular asshole self here, i want those goddamn Texans to Stand up and Recognize, Yo.
We Rochestarians are EVERYWHERE and even in high places at BM, so dont fuck with our muddy water, or yank our white hots.
now, who has the Balls to admit they appropriated the concept?

PS FISHY, Midtown Mall was the first URBAN indoor mall, Southland was the first SUB-URBAN indoor mall...
we were both right, and wiki didn't lie to us.
and finnegan, i believe they are one and the same, and as this is the year they start demolition of MidTown Mall, it seems appropos to burn a Mock up of it at the Man....
BM is always ahead of the curve, i hope this is the shape of things to come, and i got dibbs on the georgetown mall in DC, i wanna personally burn down the banana republic there, a salesgirl pissed me off one day, and i carry grudges forever.

Hi all,
My name's Ira & I'm part of "Community Art Makers", the Austin, TX crew led by Dave Umlas and Marrilee Ratcliffe. As you can imagine, we're very proud to have been chosen to build this year's Temple. Unfortunately, David Best will not be involved with it this year although we're *very* grateful to him for coming down to Texas to appear at recent fundraisers in Austin and Houston.
Thank you all for your kind words about our design! If you're interested in coming down to Texas to help us build, we'd love to hear from you. Please contact Dave/Marrilee at: temple AT communityartmakers DOT com.
Here's a few photos for the curious:

Fundraiser #2 - Houston
We'll also be posting occasional updates on our main site, http://communityartmakers.com
Thanks!!
