Anyone Fluent On California "Assault" Weapon Laws?

Post by TomServo » Sat May 30, 2009 1:41 pm

In 1999, when I went to Big5 to get the registration card for my AK, I was given a book.. with all the new "assault" weapon laws. I seem to remember a tiny part in that book, allowing the transfer of these weapons through immediate family members. Is this still the case?? And, if so..does my Dad being an Oregon resident, leave me shit out of luck??

He has a cool little Czech Mauser, that he wants to give me..but the 12ga. Saiga shotgun he has, looks like fun too!

Just thought I'd ask around here, before calling the BATF or DOJ with my question.

you might try their website, it has FAQ's, that, I bet, deal with this......
I know one thing about the assault weapons laws are they are having a tough time interpreting and therefore enforcing........not that they won't arrest you and then see if the charges hold, but, I'm told some are more enforceable than others...........

A Mauser? As in bolt action WWII?

It might be in the antique relic and curio section. In which case no registration needed.

Practice with it for the days when the lizard men invade our pretty planet.

Firearms manufactured prior to 1898 are Antiques.
WW2 BAR's are Curios and Relics.

Here is the CA DOJ Firearms Law Booklet from the AG's office:

I'm aware of curio/relics..I was referring to the Saiga shotgun. It's a semi-auto, Russian made firearm, with a detachable 10-round magazine... thus being an "assault" weapon.

As for the lizard men..after 8 long years, the bastards are finally out of office!

thank you **burn** I will check out your links. Ive been over and over every gov. site regarding the issue, and it appears that our own government doesnt know shit from shinola. Which was obvious, when they went first after these weapons..

The Saiga shotgun, if it were a rifle, would be considered "assault weapon", as it shares many of the characteristics that are limited.
Ah, but it is a shotgun. And, I think that is why the Saiga shotgun is doing so well in California.

As far as I know, there are no limits within the Ca AW Ban that affect the Saiga shotgun.

But I am not fluent or anything.

I think they got some separate action going against large-cap shotguns. i haven't had my oars in that water for a while, but I doubt if that's legal in Calif. Are you taking it to the range or leaving it behind the door?

Hey TomServo, here's a good sight for info on Cali guns.http://www.calguns.net/ Good luck. After living in the state for twenty years I never felt like I could get a grasp on the laws concerning assault rifles. It's nice to live in a weapons friendly state again! As of last year the saiga shotguns were still legal. I know you could only have 10 cap. mags and I'm sure there was a myriad of other regulations, but still legal. Anyway, the Calguns site has a lot of knowledgable members and good advice.

I remember the limit being 10 rounds in a high cap. mag. That's why I thought the Saiga was in the clear. I keep all my firearms locked up, and do go to the range every now and then, But the place I do most of my shooting is in Black Rock. At that dump, by the frog pond. If my girlfriend weren't so attached to the bay area, I'd probably move to Reno.
Ive heard of AR builders in Cali, welding the mags to the lower receiver, and it passing as a non-assault weapon. thought about welding small "L" brackets to the Saiga mag and using small bolts to the receiver, to make it "un-detachable"...

THANK YOU SILVERORANGE!! That link was invaluable! Apparently, I can't bring my dad's Saiga into California, until I install a magazine lock. But for just $25 it's no big deal. I'm attaching the flow chart page from your link. It's a PDF file so I had trouble getting it here.. but it's a great fucking resource for any "assault" weapon owner! Or anyone interested in buying a "questionable" gun.. Just click on CA AW FLOWCHART (in big black letters) in the adobe box..
