So you allow a hairstyle to define who you are.
Yeah, I think it does.

Its actually about a sixth of what I am. As I am only a bit more than five feet tall.

And I don't use hair gel, I use gelatin (a baking product that works incredibly well) and sometimes a thin coating of gorilla or wood glue, although that is very hard to get out. Lasts for about a month and then I wash it out, not because its starting to give out but because I'm getting tired of sleeping on my side.

Wow, sorry for all the random information.

Random is good. Is it pink and blue? For some reason, I picture it as those colors.

Your right, its pink. I haven't had it blue yet, I've had it every other color of the rainbow (including the rainbow (for pride)) but I haven't had it solidly blue yet. Maybe that will be next.

Since your mohawk is you, are you

mohawk man

or

mohawk boy??

Would you cut it off at Burning Man? Let the YOU out, see if the hair really matters.

If it is a foot long I guess you have been working on it for 3 or 4 years, is that close?

I'm not the mohawk, I just like my hair that way. It actually takes less work then some of my friends "normal" hair as I only need about an hour or so (depending on how many layers I want) and then it stays up pretty much as long as I want. I'm still growing it out to a foot, the way I said that was misleading I guess. By the time I am free during that time of the year (about two years) it will be a foot long. Most peoples hair grows about six inches each year. Its only six inches now as I only recently discovered something strong enough to hold up long hair.

I'd appreciate if people would stop with the "So you allow a hairstyle to define who you are" stuff, its getting old. I like my mohawk, its helped me become more confident and care less about what other people think about me. Its for my benefit only and I am not going to cut or shave it off because of anyone or anything. Getting the mohawk was letting the ME out.

Ok, you got it. Sounds like your having fun with it and thats really all that matters, aye?

I was wondering what your response would be, thanks for understanding and taking the time to explain.

Ok, now how do you make a hat for that hair?? I guess its the sides of your head that you are worried might get sun burned?

A straw cowboy hat might be easy to work with. You can cut it down the middle and make room for you hair and still lace it up so it don;t get all floppy.

I suppose you should use some glue or matte medium to seal off the edges so it don't moop.

Excellent reply.

I did forget in my decrepitude that a hawk over about 6 inches, stronger stuff than simple hair gel was necessary to raise the hawk in all of its glory. I have fond memories of one of my friends laying his head on the ironing board while we applied various binding and stiffening components to his hair and set them using a iron.

Now for suggestions to your need for a wide brim hate to accommodate your hairstyle. When you reset your liberty spikes, do you find you typically utilize the same base size for each one? As in each spike is always roughly the same size? If not, try to get into a rhythm of making each one about say the width of your hawk by say 2 inches long at the base. The dimensions are not really terribly important, they just need to be consistent to work with the idea I have.

Base layer: A canvas, summer weight flight helmet liner similar to the venerable World War One flying ace hat worn by Snoopy. You should be able to find a decent reproduction of these at any surplus style store in the $20 to $30 range. A traditional skull cap type hat will work, but will not have the swashbuckling style of the flight hat.

Down the center line of the cap, map out where your spikes are. This is where the consistency of the dimensions come into play.

Cut a hole half the size of the spike out of the center of each rectangle. Score the remaining "X" (from corner to corner) out to the edges of the rectangle. When you put the cap on over your spikes, this will give you small flaps that cover around the base of each spike without impeding the spike projecting out the top or covering much of the base up.

For a hot climate, the canvas can be wetted down to keep your head cool while protecting your scalp and ears from the sun. A lined, leather cap can be similarly modified to keep your head warm in the winter.

Add some interesting goggles and you are set.

For shade purposes, I personally would go with fabric. A shemagh:

Can be easily attached or tied around the base of the cap.

These come in a full range from drab military shades to fun fashion colors. I have 7 or 8 of them in a range of colors that I wear in a full head wrap as shown above for working in the sun and I always have one on at Burning Man day or night. These are cheap (7 or 8 bucks), 100% cotton and can be used as a dust mask by pulling it over your face etc.

If you are wanting the wide brim, I would suggest a stiff weave panama style hat and simply cut the top of it off and leave the brim and inner head band intact. Find some cheap ones to experiment with to get the necessary cuts made before cutting up a well made one.

The flight helmet would work well with the street fighter goggles I am thinking of getting. I do try and keep them about the same width each time, but I could also just cut out a center stripe and then have straps imbetween each spike.

I could also try and make something from scratch, even if it doesn't work out well it would still be a fun project for me.
