ok, now i'm having remorse....here's my one nice deed for the day....fucking boy-scouts, man, they totally screwed my whole sense of snark.

here ya go, here's my penitence...some useful info for all of you New Yawkers.

Your five NYC Regional Contacts invite you to the annual Meet & Greet!

Date: Wednesday, June 17
Venue: The Delancey
Address: 168 Delancey at Clinton
Time: 5pm til 10pm

This five-hour "open house" formatted evening will be held on The Delancey's lush roof deck. There's a retractable roof cover, so the event is rain or shine!
There will be representatives from as many art projects, theme camps and departments-you-can-volunteer-with as we can manage to wrangle!
If any of those descriptions describe YOU, please come and bring stuff to show and tell! (How's THAT for wrangling?)
Newbies! Come with questions, ideas, enthusiasm and excitement!
Oldbies! Come with answers, wisdom, helpful tips and hilarious tales of dust and transformation!

This is a Happy Hour sanctioned event. Thanks, Mayor Ratti!

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
xoxo

He took his pathos pill.

So, predict with me the next sock attack. Maybe a pair of 18-year old Swedish girls who have tickets but need a ride... Send money quick!

Nigerian banker wants to attend Burning man but needs help converting currency...

Novelist writing story about Burningman and its sex- and drug-soaked rituals but can't handle bright sunlight...

Any others?

So, SilverFly……..are you going to Burning Man by yourself or are you camping with others? It’s too bad that the Theme Camp registration is closed……..you could have come up with a theme like:

I’m Depressed as Fuck Camp
I’m as Crazy as a Loon Camp (Only at BM nobody would notice)
I Have Multiple Personality…..No, I Don’t…..Yes, I Do……..Camp
Let’s Talk About Our Feelings Camp (You would get the chicks with this one)

As someone who takes 2 different anti-depressants daily I would visit any of those camps mentioned above. For me Burning Man is about the best place for my depressed ass to be……it’s sunny (mostly), It’s hot (mostly), there are cool people (mostly) and you will notice that there are people WAY more fucked up than you out there…….so, make yourself at home………

To the OP (if you're still with us...)
I've been seeing a shrink and/or taking anti-depressants most of my adult life. I've crawled out of the hole enough times to REALLY not want to go there again. So I sympathize.

Having said that, I find it hard to comprehend seeing a shrink 4 times a week. To try to extrapolate my experience into that situation - I'd have to be out on the ragged edges to need that much support. I've BEEN to some ragged edges, and gotten by on once a week. And if I were that far out, no, I wouldn't be ready to go without it for a week. Burning Man will be here next year, and the year after that.

Your experience may be vastly different. I'm picturing a Woody Allen movie, where he's in therapy 3 times a week because that's what old fashioned therapists do.

On the other hand (I think I'm up to three hands here) I often characterize BMan as the Island of Misfit Toys http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_th ... V_special) Many of the people you meet there just don't quite fit in in "normal" society. Burningman is a great place to go and be who you really are inside. Which can be very therapeutic.

Not sure if Original Poster is still watching, but in case you are, I'll share a couple of thoughts.

- Ignore the folks that don't understand the difference between psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Obviously the frequency of your sessions has nothing to do with the issues you're dealing with, but rather is the nature of the exercise. Psychoanalysis involves frequent visits (typically 4x/week) if you want that sort of deep work.

- I have done phone sessions with my therapist while traveling, but don't recommend doing it unless you know your doctor well. Because phone calls lack visual cues, the dynamic of the conversation is very different. If you're going to try it at Burning Man, make sure that you've tried it beforehand a couple of times while you're still at home, so that you can get used to a phone session before you add the confusing complexity of BMan.

- I personally would not recommend doing a phone session at Burning Man. As you mentioned, it's not too much fun trying to keep track of the schedule and remember when to go drive to town or find satellite phone or whatever. It'll probably add a lot of stress to your day and that will give a wrong impression of what your day is really like.

- It seems to me that it'd be better to skip that week. But like with phone sessions, I'd try skipping a week outside Burning Man first to make sure you know what it'll feel like.

Ugly Dougly - I too may be "falling" for this. If so and I'm simply speaking to a foot covering, so be it. It may prove to be helpful to someone else with a similar question.

RE Artemis:

I understand that most people have absolutely no comprehension of what psychoanalysis is, so I don't take other people's judgment of my therapeutic choices seriously. I thought by indicating that I was "in psychoanalysis" may ring a bell with anyone who has experience with that form of therapy, and that they would have a valuable response to give.

As many have suggested, I have skipped weeks before, so I do know that I'll make it through. I was just a little anxious because from my understanding things could get intense. Knowing that the Sanctuary exists helps to squash that anxiety though.

I appreciate your input about calling while at Burning Man. I definitely don't want to be stressing out over calling her while I'm there and dealing with repercussions of whatever may impede my ability to call her at a specified time.

Thank you for your response. You don't fail, as I am not a sock.

I'm sure Silverfly knows, as everyone does, that the best health advice comes from random dicks on the internet who know nothing about them.

There are a number of stressors on the playa both physical and emotional. This may be bad or it might be good depending on what your triggers are. There are plenty of health professionals and other caring folk out there who can help you through any rough patches if you're able to seek them out.

Yes... advice from strangers on the internet is much more reliable than what a trained mental health professional might advise.

I liked the suggestion of trying a week off and seeing how it feels. You may assume the support at Burning man will suffice, but you won't know for certain how a week off will feel without some sort of pre-test with your support system to fall back on in your regular surroundings. You could try writing unmailed letters to your therapist or journaling as a way of processing your stuff. Burning man is a massive sensory overload in any case. It's a leap from point "A" for certain, courageous stuff for all of us. I wish you the best whatever you decide to do.
