Supposedly just plain iron, but I have my doubts. (Actually, attempting to weld would be more accurate. My first try since junior high school (actually, I only welded once, with a lot of supervision) back in the late 1970s, which I no longer recall very well.) It was just a plain stick welder, and supposedly just plain iron.
The headache and stuff might have been coincidental. I hadn't slept well the night before, a weather front was moving through, and some other stuff which might have added to it. But the timing sure made it suspicious. If it weren't my first time actually trying working with metals in about 30+ years, maybe I would know better...
Please don't ask how my angle grinding turned out, although, at least, the results will probably be usable...
Oh, and this humid weather can just go fuck off! With or without it I have to extract (fancy word for clean) carpets at work!

was said metal galvanized? That'd be the first suspect if you felt sick. It can also make welding difficult, especially if your not familiar.
Was it painted, and, did you weld through the paint? Burned paint or other coatings can be quite toxic.
just welding plain steel, shouldn't, really, get you sick. Maybe you're particularly sensitive, but, most aren't. I've not noted, or worn myself, a mask for breathing (only face shield as far as welding lens for eye protection)......I'm sure if you weld all day, days on end, it'd be good for the dust issue.
Just some thoughts.

Didn't look (fucking) galvanized, but something seemed odd about it when I was using the wire brush to scrape the rust off. I'm not certain what about it seemed odd. Maybe it wasn't related, or maybe I am just sensitive. (I'd felt sick the first time I used the angle grinder, but there I was grinding through paint and, without realizing it, plastic. [There was a layer of plastic inside of a hinge on one of the bikes.]) I'll have to see what happens next time I try welding. Oh, and the other problem I had was that I either couldn't get a (fucking) spark, or the stick would instantly weld itself to the surface of the metal. I tried playing with the amperage some, but it didn't seem to make a difference. it was directed at what i THOUGHT was a fundi-church trying to hassle e-playa.
i was wrong. The person i was angry with is having some serious issues and is actually legit, and i misread something as something else and made an assumption that was incorrect.....boy talk about vague, but i have been on the phone all morning to try to decipher a mystery that is slowly unraveling, but gets more murky as it does... but anyway, jesus wasn't so bad, if he actually existed, and i sometimes quote his ass in vain if he didn't, because he had some great ghost writers.

Our coffee maker after grinding the beans starts making fucking noises - literally fucking noises - each time it pushes the coffee into the pot it moans. Not loud, but sensuously softly. Fucking sailboat motor! A great fucking day for sailing yesterday, blue skies and great fucking winds. Motoring out, and the fucking motor quits. Fortunately the fucking winds were with us and we sailed back into the slip. Add gas, starts right up, hmmm, lets motor over to the gas dock for some fucking expensive gas. FUCK! It dies again. Fuck, I hate pain. I fell Saturday full weight on my right shoulder. I still hurt, just a sprain, not broken arm. I have to dress one-handed. I can move my right forearm around but can't lift my arm from the shoulder. I've been doing range-of motion exercises by lifting my right with my left.
I was at a community picnic moving down the chow line. I stepped in a hole in the park ground and fell. I fell like a redwood, my hands were full and I was off balance. Two guys tried to lift me up, but one guy was wrenching on my bad arm. I collapsed from the pain. It took three guys to finally move me to a chair. I was very embarrassed and ashamed at my weakness. I was crying in pain in public.
I stayed though, I wasn't going to let that damned hamburger win. I finished my lunch. I can be very stubborn at times. Then another guy fell by stepping in the same damn hole. Then they decided to move the serving tables over the hole.
