I remember a woman in a dirty torn dress dragging a stuffed animal behind her on a leash. Every few feet she would turn around and angrily scold the thing under her breath like it was a three-year old misbehaving in the check-out line.
I stalked her for the next five or six minutes to see if she broke character. Nope. Then I saw her a couple days later still doing it.
Thinking about it freaks me out to this day.
Welcome Home!

my first year there , we were in line for the JOTs and a couple dudes came up to the crowd wearing depends undergarments, offering everyone a chance to take advantage of not having to wait (they had some spares, a whole bag full).
The dude right behind us took them up on thier offer, put one on, crouched down and thanked them while he made dooty, and then walked away. He started walking funny after about 100 feet or so.
I still wonder if that was for real or staged.

We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.
the night of the man burning i "participated" in festivities and got a ride on a mutant car. Just watching the lights around me, the people around me, hearing the techno...in absolute awe of the desert night sky. I felt like i could die happy. It was the most wonderful feeling. Almost child like. All i could feel was the moment. Like letting go of everything and just being with nature. I will never forget it.
I will also never forget the people and our conversations....great stuff.
To me it was heaven just perfect

While attempting to offer my welder to help fix La Contessa after miraculously not killing myself or anyone as I manned that really wicked rotating teeter totter I was kidnapped by the crew of the Freudian Ship. They forcefully took me to my camp in the front seat of a toyota land cruiser. Once there they demanded to see the welder. I ended up welding the steering component and helped with the installation. They gave me the best bloody mary in return and I cruised with them for hours.
I got to camp at the break of dawn and reunited with my bicycle I rode out to the temple to watch the sun rise. I cried and a very nice girl gave me beer.
It was the best night of my life.
Second best was at Opulent Temple with my Stag Camp Crew!!!

This one time, at Burning Man...
In '04, I set out to meet a lot of specific people from eplaya. The only one that eluded me the whole week was Technopatra, former eplaya admin and generally cool girl.
The last day, I was hanging in camp with the neighbors and we decided to go on one last cruise on the boat. One of the neighbors asked to go to Center Camp coffee shop to see her friend Nicole... who turned out to be none other than... Technopatra!
We pulled her aboard, fed her ice cream with Kahlua, hung out and cruised the rest of the evening. That's the kind of thing that happens at BM.

One night at BM, after a hard night working and then drinking to excess till 5 or 6 AM, My mate and I fell asleep on 2 tables
We woke up in our underwear, clothes folded neatly next to us, getting a massage form no less than 4 people each. The tables were massage tables, and we wandered into some camp.
What a way to wake up.

Personal faves:
3) the 'lost canadian' who camped with the penguins in 05 or 06, and whom we ran into again last year DURING the burn so that we could hear how he was 'found'. he had lost his friends and only found them again by listening to a psychic who told him to 'go to the burn'
2) i didn't experience this, but heard about a guy who put a portapotty waaaaay out there and ran a bar out of it. that is the most extreme dedication to a playa project I have heard
1) my wife and I won the honeymoon suite at the opening night of simply the best place I have ever been - hotel ashram galactica. it was my first burningman experience and probably won't be topped. my wife and i were literally weeping with joy that night.

0) each and every birthsong we give out as our gift to the playa. if you run into us this year we'll tell you YOUR birthsong

i ended up alone and away from my camp and friends one night. danced to Anasia as she banged out some incredible sounds i had never heard before. behind the stage on a dusty bed i shared a joint with 6 girls i had never met and quietly listened to them openly talk about their childhood memories.
eventually i ended up at the temple to watch the sunrise. there, a bunch of kids held hands and walked towards the rising sun. when they caught up to me i joined them and we made a circle facing each other. very naturally we raised our arms together and yelled out with joy and happiness. shortly thereafter i broke down and bawled uncontrollably like a newborn baby. 15 years or so prior to that i had not shed more than a tear. a genius named Scott London captured this moment:

i am the third person to the right of the center. it was the most profound moment of the best week of my life.

Sounds like an incredible moment, LOVE the photo.
The most memorable experience that I had on the playa would have to have been during the intense white out preceding that magnificent double rainbow during 2007. My two favorite people on the planet and I made it a point to get lost that day. We rode our bikes out to the very perimeter and planted ourselves near an odd little piece of art. We smoked and laughed and had a grand old time We played with little building blocks under a random shade structure and reveled in acting like children with no cares in the world. As we started off on our way to our next adventure, I look up and coming towards us from the inner playa with full force was a blanket of white! We all exclaimed "Holy shit!" and braced ourselves. As we were suddenly and aggressively engulfed by playa dust, time seemed to stop. Aside from the muffled guffaws of my friends and my own muted laughter I heard nothing but wind. We tried to stay put as our vision was completely impaired. We were all fully immersed in this kick ass moment, time passes a bit (5 min, 20.. who knows really) and suddenly from out of nowhere (literally) people start passing in and out of our little bubble of space. Some stop and talk for a bit, others pass by asking where the hell they are. Then this tall guy with an incredibly industrial gas mask and a large regal looking walking stick, saunters in and tips his hat to say hello. *Swish* A monstrous gust of wind swoops my hat right off my head and I watch it for a split second dance away until it disappears completely into the nothingness. The tall industrial cowboy/jedi looking sort puts his hand out as to say (allow me) and takes off after my hat. We are all completely perplexed as to what the hell he is thinking... how can he possibly expect to find anything out there? Let alone get back to us if he did! More time allegedly passes... and who comes back? You guessed it.. although empty handed.. our cowboy comes back from the haze, comes up to me and says, "So sorry, I couldn't find it, but here take this scarf, it should help your hair a bit" I took the scarf, thanked him profusely and inquired as to how he was able to locate the exact spot that he had left us in this impossible storm. He drew a deep line in the alkaline dust with his walking stick and said "I cheated"
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

After my first trip to Burning Man, I was reading some blogs that people wrote about their experiences. One guy was just waxing poetic about his first burn and the magnificent full moon on the horizon over the playa.nilafila wrote:Really, that could have been a staged event? wow burning man is gonna be really sumpm!!oneeyeddick wrote:.

He just went on and on about that beautiful full moon.
There was no full moon that year. It was a lighted helium balloon over our camp. Maybe it's real, maybe it isn't. That's Burning Man.
A free spirit blew through camp
*She* came into camp carrying just a funnel attached to a hose. A beautiful dark haired irish lassie (thick brogue), wearing only panties and hiking boots and very very drunk. She offered beer bongs to the guys...of course they provide the beer, she drank some and then she would have them kneel before her crotch and drink from the hose that wound through the panties. I noticed her knee bleeding from a gash, after cleaning it for her and making sure it wasn't deep, bandaged it for her......she went on her merry way. I was mesmerized by how free of a spirit she was.

Being "very very drunk" usually makes it easier for women to be "free spirits"Nitevenus wrote:*She* came into camp carrying just a funnel attached to a hose.
