Looking for a camp.

Post by Izord » Wed Jun 17, 2009 4:16 pm

I'm Iz. I'm 44 and my wife is 30, she's Russian.
We're going to the burning man camp for the first time in 2009.

Going to bring the Colonel, whos a Albuquerque native, rides an electroglide, and his woman....

As well as Roma and his wife Lena, they are both Russians, been living in the US for about 5 years.

And Maybe a kid or two.

We'll bring 4 bikes to ride around the playa.

We're going to live in sweet 40 foot RV with airconditioing. I know, but it's the sad realitiy. Anyway... We want to find a camp to stay in. Some place not too demanding but friendly and with easy access to the rest of Burning Man.

Any suggestions appreciated! thanks.

Iz

Yup, join please. : ) Looking for some community where we can fit in, even though we are admittedly pretty weird. : ) Just not kind of run-of-the-mill.

so when that guy/gal said "no" I took it like they didn't want us there, but I'm kind of sensitive sometimes. but hey, I've driven from Moscow to Rostov on shrooms before, so I have a little ability to deal with the unforgiving. : )

Just looking for a camp that want some worldwide misfits in a bigass RV to hang with them.

I'd say, if you're hoping people will line up to have you and your RV there, you may have a wait.......

that said, you are very welcome, in fact, "welcome"........
you don't need a camp to "come home", just drive in, find a place, talk to the neighbors to make sure all are comfortable with how you park, and, jump in.............You're so self contained, it's not like you need anything..........
roam the city, find that which you seek, (even if you don't know you're seeking it)......have fun.

make sure to commit all the first timers and survival guide stuff to memory.........

to many noob questions will elicit much snark.............but, you'll eventually get good info, if you persist........

We're pagans, and a little nordic, my wife Angel has beautiful blue eyes.

Trying to say hi. and maybe find the best place to go.

I heard our RV will even provide wind shelter for those camped near us.

So this is new to us, and trying to find where we should go, or NOT go. Maybe some camps are too extreme for us. You know we're kind of old. : )
Looking for more or less a mainsteam camp. Not too this, not too that.

You know, we like to hang out in Amsterdam, and spent last summer in Haarlem. And the spring in Cape Town. So we're not exactly sheltered, but not looking to offend any sensibilities.

Any suggestions on different camps to park in? Is it even a choice? I feel it is.

What camps should we avoid parking in?

6-8 folks in an RV IS a camp...you're self-contained and you have a power source.
You'll get a map when you arrive. ThemeCamps are marked, don't park there. If you arrive after dark, park on the outermost ringroad and explore on foot, then sleep.
Next morning, scope out the area, look around for folks who seem welcoming - an RV is a good windblock, but also comes with generator noise and fumes - work with the tenters to accommodate them, everyone will be happy (it's really nice to offer a power source to neighbors that might benefit).
Any Themecamp is going to expect you to work to support their 24/7 interactivity, and most are already full of people who've been planning their shenanigans all year.
Participation means jumping in and helping out: you can do that anywhere!
Don't worry...ya'll will fit right in, meet fabulous people, see amazing stuff, and come away with a new outlook!

Gaminwench, Hey thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

Wherever we park, people are welcome to hook up to our plugins, of course we won't run the generator all the time. Maybe a few hours a day. We want to help out how we can.

Got it about Theme Camps. Makes sense.

I've wanted to go to burning man since 1999, but finally going to make it happen. : )

Everyone here is excited about it. I need to go read those faqs again.

You don't just "park" in someone's themecamp without first being a member.
almost if not all themecamps won't have extra room to park your RV in, as space is reserved and limited with most themecamps.

Just clarifying that for you, there seems to be some confusion........
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Izord, If your coming early in the week(monday-tuesday) then finding a nice spot in the middle will be easy. After that with that size rig your going to need to park in the outer area 1st. Get out and walk/.bike in and see if you can find a spot closer if you want.

If you have never driven a 40 footer before, they are somewhat easy on the freeway. But on the 2 lane road your going to take up a lot of the road. DON'T PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER ON HWY 447.... You will get stuck.

That many people will fill your shit tank and shower tanks FAST..
You MIGHT get lucky and find they guys to pump your tanks. MIGHT...
It will cost $$$ 75-100 CASH.. Have some COLD drinks ready to give to the people that check you and greet you..

Your running Diesel for fuel I guess, if so I think Wadsworth is the closest filling spot. Your Gennie will suck about 1 gal/hour. Keep that in mind while you sit out dust storms.

Have fun.... 8) 8) 8)

ibdave,

Hey, I'm gonna be a shower nazi, And I don't think my crew will be allowed in there. Maybe a reward for VERy good behavior.

Wondering about the dates, when you say 'early in the week (Monday-Tuesday), you mean Aug 31, or Aug 24?

My 40 footer is a fiver, I've pulled it a little. Fairly comfortable with it. I have a 100 gallon diesel + 30 gallon gas tank. I think I can make it the whole week. We'll see.

Replace the constantly flowing showerhead with a hose and a dishsprayer, and your water will last a LOT longer.

Oneeye, I have an outside shower that I think will work to conserve the water. The girlies will be less likely to waste it when they're outside.

The inside shower will just have a 'technical problem' for the duration of BM.

The same goes for the outside shower.

forced military showers use 1/6th the amount of water as a constant flow does.

You will run out of water out there, and getting Julie's water service to rfill it is not always an easy thing to do, especially later in the week.

Option B is to bring a 55 gallon drum full with you, and refill it yourself....

Good tips oneeye. Might bring some extra water. I think I have like 100 gallons onboard. We could make that last.

What's the best day to arrive?

see, you're already getting good info......the snark will begin soon.

One thing to consider with an RV that size is, just that, it's that size.

Fairly hard to maneuver down the streets, especially if later in the week (after Aug. 31).

The advise you've been given about parking in the outer ring and walking or biking around to find a spot is very sound.

Also regarding holding tanks and water: it's a pain to go out and come back, don't even plan on it, so, either conserve so you don't over flow or run out of water, or, arrange with the JOTS crew to pump your tanks, but, as stated, bring cash for them..........no gifting on that one..........

Don't sweat finding a "camp"............just park and enjoy......you may find a 'camp', you may not. But, it will be mucho funno, anyway.

good luck

Unless you have early entry passes, august 31st is when the gate officially opens, at 12.01 A.M.

Iz,

Learning about Burning Man is like the old Marxism class, all Dogma.

Go here: http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/ and read everything 10 times until you live and breathe the диктатура пролетариата [BMORG].

Once you are assimilated into the Dogma of Burning Man, go to the Q&A forum and search for answers.

If you can't find the answers, post in a funny, sarcastic way so that no one takes you seriously for all the right answers.
