cutting 1/2" rebar
On the latest trip to the hardware store I picked up a 10' length of 1/2 rebar for under $5, since the 12" lenghts were almost $2 a piece, not hard to figure the better deal...But now I have this bar and no chop saw, so how should I go about getting this down to the 12" bars???

If you have a circular saw, they make a fiber blade for metal. It cuts through rebar like butter, but wear goggles as it does throw sparks. Also watch where the sparks go, flammable objects can light off. I aim towards a concrete driveway or a nice green lawn. If you wear glasses, do not trust them in place of the goggles, this blade melts though the metal and the sparks are hot pieces of metal that will destroy a good pair of glasses.

Cut the rebar into 15" lengths. Place about 2" of rebar into vice. Slide a 4' long by 1' diameter metal pipe over the ~11 inches of rebar you have sticking up out of the vice. Using the pipe for leverage bend the rebar (that is unless you're a total pussy....then get some girl scout to do it for you). You will be able to bend the rebar so it is almost in a hook shape so there is no gagged edge for people to step on. When you set up your tent you use a 4 to 8 pound sledge hammer to pound the bent rebar stake flat into the ground; so there is no part sticking up to step on......thus endith the lesson.

Just remember to always use the right tool for the job.
Sawzall to cut rebar-YES
Sawzall as a sex toy-NO
LEXINGTON PARK, Md. -- Some sexual experimentation landed a southern Maryland woman in a hospital with injuries tough to imagine and even more difficult to forget.
Maryland State Police airlifted the 27-year-old woman to Prince George's County Hospital Center early Sunday morning after she was injured in an incident involving a sex toy attached to a saber saw blade, TheBayNet.com first reported.
The man who called 911 about the incident admitted attaching the sex toy to the saw and then using the high-powered, homemade device on his partner, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.
The saw cut through the plastic toy and wounded the woman, according to TheBayNet.com. The injuries were severe enough for medevac, but the woman was released from the hospital Monday and is recovering from her unusual injuries.
Investigators talked to the woman, who told them she suffered the injuries during a consensual act and that she and her partner were trying something new and no crime was committed, the sheriff's office said.

What kind of tool to use? what kind of tool that one can find walking down the street, in the road, totally free, easily and quickly used, cuts rebar like butter? none I can think of. But have you considered, other people's tools?
cutting torch, floor stand bolt cutters, reciprocating saw, grinder with metal cutting disc. I think it is right to say a hacksaw will send you lurching back to the hardware store for the pre-cut lengths.

At the steel yard (Capital steel-Sacramento; cheapestgyre wrote:Metal cutting lubricated bandsaw.
Or hydraulic shears or boltcutters.
place around) where they only sell 10 ft lengths on
several occasions I've tried:
24 inch bolt cutters -works poorly with great effort.
Maybe 36 or 48 in mega jumbo or floor mounted one?
Hacksaw - almost worthless. Some contractors took pity
on me and let me use their truck mounted hand hydraulic
shears. to cut them in half in 10 seconds to go in my
small SUV.
Hydraulic shears, see above, work great !
Cutting torch- likely good
Cutoff wheels (electric or air) great but a bit slow.
Those of us flying in by air can't carry such heavy stuff !
