Plastic heads needed

Post by Rusted Iron » Sun Feb 15, 2009 6:12 pm

I'm looking for life-sized human and animal heads, made of plastic, rubber, or other materials that are sturdy yet fairly light weight.

So far I only have a few, and THE SKY IS FALLING! needs about twelve or fifteen.

If you know where I might find one or more, I'd appreciate it. I'm in the SF North Bay.

You could pull a plaster cast from one of your heads and make duplicates from A-B foam...("Great Stuff" expanding foam is similar.) You just need to line the mold with cellophane or latex paint as a release agent. DO NOT USE FOIL. It reacts with the foam and makes a godawful mess.
Or, ask at the largest department store you can find about what they might be chucking out mannequinwise.

Sometimes you can get used heads from a beauty college. You can skin them if you are careful and patient.

There are always those styrofoam heads that they use for hat stands.

I know what to do with metal, but not this stuff.

Post by Rusted Iron » Mon Feb 16, 2009 6:58 pm

I'm intrigued by the idea of duplicating heads. Does the A-B foam come in a spray can, with a long nozzle top? If so, I think I know what it is. If not, I don't. Hardware store or arts and crafts store?

I have a clear, plastic male-appearing head, (along with a silver mannequin head, a large Operation head, a fencing head, a couple of very ugly yet realistic looking latex masks.) The plastic head looks like it was designed to be a mold, but I don't know if material goes on the inside or outside, or what.

Details: The heads are going to be looking up at a piece of sheet metal, suspended above them, that's going to make a thundering sound. There might be rats, too, because there has to be.

Check a costume shoppe. Could fill rubber masks w/ 2-part foam, or use masks on plain foam heads.

Bush masks should be going cheap.

Oh, good! I was HOPING that you were nuts.... Welcome to The Special Olympics Of Art, Where Everyone's A Winner!

YES...your description of the "civilian version" of the A-B foam can is accurate. Okay stuff to work with, but if you're making LOTS of heads then you might want to buy "the real stuff". Be warned that BOTH versions are Insanely Sticky. I was in a hurry to fill a woodpecker hole in my siding the other day and used too much foam..(you're supposed to only fill halfway and then let it expand)...the foam ooodjed out and down the siding and onto a basement window. I'm trying REAL hard to forget about it until Spring.

Ooodjed is the only word in the English language that is spelled with three os in a row. And yes, every single one is needed. So needed, in fact, that some spell it with for.

you could also pack foundry sand around these, then pour in the molten metal of your choice to make metal busts...the eps vaporizes as the molten foam touches it

Is this what you're looking for? If it is, I could loan her to you after I'm done with her. I will rinse her down and patch a few leaks. Just promise to be nice to Monique!

The male styrofoam heads look highly usable. And abusable. Thanks.
