Driving from New England- where to get water?

I still have not heard an answer to this question, and I've asked a half dozen times...

Without going to Reno, and without bringing water from home, where can you buy water? We have those blue containers that we want to fill. Is there anywhere in Winnemucca, Elko, or etc. on I-80 in Nevada?

Reno just seems out of the way, and annoying. Plus we are renting a car, and every mile counts.

Reno isn't particularly out of the way, nor (in my experience at least) particularly annoying -- it's a pretty small city. And if you're not getting unlimited mileage on your car rental, you should find another car rental company -- it's getting increasingly rare to charge for mileage.

Reno isn't particularly out of the way, nor (in my experience at least) particularly annoying -- it's a pretty small city. And if you're not getting unlimited mileage on your car rental, you should find another car rental company -- it's getting increasingly rare to charge for mileage.

I hated Reno last year. I got lost trying to find Walmart, there were a bunch of one way streets near our hotel, I couldn't find the entrance back to I-80, etc. We stayed in Reno for one night before going to Burning Man last year.

I liked Winnemucca so much better! We stayed there when we left Burning Man, and I'm looking forward to going back.

Round trip, going to Reno does add several hours to the trip. We were so squeezed in last year after we had finished purchasing our last minute supplies (like beer for the gate people) that the driver had to be the larger person in the car because the driver's seat was the only place that had leg room. I had things under my feet, in my lap, and tucked in the doorway. I couldn't move basically from Reno to Empire.

Extra miles- yuck. No thank you. Reno does not deserve my business. I'd rather give it to other cities to the east. I just need to know where to go.

And no rental car company is pleased when you tell them you want to put 6500 miles on their rental car. And since I was in an accident within the last 3 years, some car rental places won't rent to us. And some cars are not big enough for my 6'2", 350 pound co-pilot. So for the time being, we are repeat customers of a national chain that happens to have everything we need.

So, does everyone who is driving from New England and other places in the East go to Reno for water?

I stayed in Reno for two nights after BM 2002. I'll probably do that again this year. I like being able to have a hot shower and ~15 hours of sleep in a real bed, then go to that wonderful Basque restaurant for dinner.

But why would you tell them in the first place? It's none of their business, really, especially if you're not doing a one-way rental.

web search winnemucca, look at local businesses and call them to see id they have what you need. I know there is a super market there (albertsons I think, they will either have what you need or be able to tell you where you can find it.....heck just call the chamber of commerce

Depends on how mch water you need.

I filled a waterbed matress in Santa Cruz and roped it to the roof of my SUV last year and at 3 am drove the missle down the steep byways. It was a desaster waiting to happen, and it was hard to stop. But I made it in one piece. I had warm solar showers!

If I were you I would wait untill your desent to get much water. Why not get it in the form of Ice Blocks and take marine coolers?

But remember water is a precious resource and it would be very poor form to get it in Gerlach or something outside of Reno or Sparks in my opinion.

You might try filling up at gas stations along the way, jus make sure it's potable. Bring some water purification tablets.

I would advise filling up in Winnemucca. There are a couple of truck stops that should have RV facilities, which includes water fillups. Use an online phone book to find a number (I know there's a flying J). Maybe a fellow burner who lives on your travel path has a garden hose you could commandeer for a while when passing through.

Hmm.. does anyone know if you can fill those blue 7 gallon jugs up at an RV filling place? I just assumed that the water pressure and connections would be all wrong. But maybe that would work? If so, then the Flying J's option would be a great solution.

Yes, there are. And none of those 3 answers were from anyone who had actually done it. 1 person told me they had done a google search or something, and listed possible water-companies that MIGHT have water available, another person told me to buy water in the grocery store.

No one actually said "This is where you want to go..." or "This is what I do..."

Ok, at the Fernley at the truck stop where everybody goes at night to get their last fill of gas there is a water pump to the side of the gas station. Sometimes they let you get water other times you might have to sneak it. But behind the truck stop is a truck wash and last year the guy let me fill up my 7 gallon containers. 2 or 4, can't remember. But I used this water to shower with, not to drink.

Was just reading an article in National Geographic "Adventurer" about hiking in Nevada. The article mentioned hiking in the Elko area. I might look to see if there are any places near there that have water. Although I suspect that most hikers just fill up water at home before they leave.
