We've been talking about this for a few years now. It's a great idea. If you don't do it right you do run the risk of being shut down, as others mentioned. If you want to dig a hole in the playa and fill it with water, you're best off if you do it back in your camp. On the open playa there will be some asshole trying to stop you with too much power.
If you want to use oil or something similar, remember that you're going to have to take that all home with you.
The best way to do it is probably to use a kiddy pool, playa and water and do it back in your camp. I'd say you'll have a darn good chance of it being successful. If you want to have good results you may want to offer showers and have some girls to seed the mud pool with.

has anyone ever looked into therapeutic qualities of playa mud? i got some dead sea mud powder at a health food store ... wet it and slap it on your skin, and it removes toxins!! or so they say...
you could add a few massage therapists and call it a spa ... just don't let any official types see the wrestling...

Playa Mud
I think playa mud would be great. It's got to have some therapeutic qualities. It's alkaline enough that it fizzes when you pour vinegar on it. I also think it's antibacterial. I wonder if playadust gets nice and slippery when you turn it into mud? :)

It gets VERY, VERY slippery. Wet snot kind of slippery.....
However - I think it has the opposite of therapeutic qualities. Any small cut or scrape you get on the playa gets red, inflamed, and takes a long time to heal if not treated and covered immediately. I remember seeing a photo of playa dust under a microscope - it had very sharp, uneven edges.
WITH THAT SAID - I'd love to see someone set up a mud wrestling pit! I like the idea of a kid's pool with playa and water in it......
Of course, that's why we all hide our evap ponds out back....because they have a tendency to become slip 'n slides otherwise.....

This might be informative for anyone planning mud wrestling: The event I previously attended went through an evolution that started with mud wrestling. The first year it was discovered that mud in the vagina, eyes, and a few other spots was actually a pretty serious irritant.
So we tried oil. The big boxes of vegitable oil that resturants use. It was better but it was expensive and caused a pretty difficult cleanup problem, both for the people and the pit.
So we tried jello the following year. Fun but way expensive. Also difficult to prepare and too dispose of.
Thus we hit on Raman Noodles. Cheap. Dump in the pit. Add hot water and stir with caneo paddle. Add cool water to bring to safe temp. Wrestle. People cleanup is easiest of all the options. Noodles are organic and could probably be burned for disposal...
Mud: medically the worst.
Oil: impossible to clean up on the playa.
Jello: expensive and hard to dispose of.
Noodles?

From personal experience I would suggest using chocolate sauce.
