No, the weather we are having now really doesn't have any bearing on what might come up in the hotter summer months.

The el nino pattern could cause us all to be wallowing in mud for the week.

....and to think that we were all worried that it would be really dry and dusty. Oh, the power of wishful thinking!

We camped out at the frogponds this weekend, I didn't make it out to the playa(muddy) but here is some video that was shot from the camp on Saturday.
It was coming down in torrents, it very much reminded me of why I moved from Seattle.

one of the locals came out and didn't know about the big firepit that is there, and he tried to go through it with his truck.....it already had standing water in it, and he drove into it during the 5 hours of downpour on saturday night.
They slept in thier truck until morning.
when we left yesterday, standing water was everywhere on the edges of Playa, and several hundred feet of water was standing on the Gerlach end of the playa.
some of the girls had walked out to the playa, on friday(before the rain) and although no pics were taken, they had to jump puddles to get to a dry spot, and it was like concrete.
I think this year will be a good year for bikes and such.
we will find out more on the 4th of Julplaya !!!

It looks like the rainy weather pattern has passed and clear and sunny is forcasted for at least the next 10 days. It only takes a few days for the playa to dry out and it should be fine in 2 weeks.
Then we will get a good look to see how the surface dried and did it form those small pools that made for the bad conditions last year.
I heard the location of BRC was changed for this year to account for that surface issue.
Last night we went below freezing for the first time in 2 months but it will start getting hot this week.

My information is that BM alternates between two sites - if you hated last year's - you'll love 2009. I believe they also reduced the size (of the Esplanade circle) back to 2007 dimensions.
How is playa access from Trego / Frog Pond area? Although I will prob go to Gerlach first for Juplaya.

Greeters for 4th of Julplaya ?
- wish I had access to good fireworks - is there a good place to look for them on the way????
Not that I know of...if you go south of Fallon to Shurs(spelling?), they sell them off of the reservation there
All we can get here is the crappy "safe and sane" stuff.
Buy a shitload of red sparklers, duct tape them all together in one log(airtight) and leave one out to use for the fuse....when the lit one reaches the others and ignites them, it makes a huge explosion...very much like a fractional stick of dynomite

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Sorry for the brevity/clarity sacrifice there.
There will not be people greeting participants - rather greeter's project doing some planning/prep and stuff sorting at the work ranch.
I have been offered some aviation aerial flares - Hmmmmmmm

I wonder if the process of chosing an area to hold the festival needs to be adjusted to accommodate changes in the playa surface.
It looked great last year until people drove on it.
as you can see even the dunes get a nice "hard crackly finish"

Please be aware that the above photos were from either 2000 or 2001

This is the most beautiful sight I have seen in years. The surface is a perfect, hard and crackly finish for bikes and art cars.

They have plenty of Beer and Booze and Bacon, just not enough for 50,000 people yet.
You can get everything you normally would get there, except Burning Man Teeshirts and calendars.
Not supporting them is not going to help thier situation out at all.

I haven't been there in a couple of years but the Schurz, NV store used to have a great selection of fireworks. If you were coming up 95 through Nevada you will pass it if you blink, Schurz is more or less the 95/95 alternate junction turnoff. There is a mini mart there, the fireworks were stored and sold in a makeshift container/trailer next door. I have no idea who to contact if they are still there though.mojo wrote:OED - I'm going too to work with greeters - wish I had access to good fireworks - is there a good place to look for them on the way????
