Odds of finding ride at airport?

Post by postcardbox » Thu Jul 02, 2009 8:14 am

I've been trying to get a ride lined up before I leave Atlanta, but if I can't by the time I leave, would I be better off flying into Reno or SF and try to find a ride? I'm willing to split the rental fee/gas and drive, so that's not a problem. I'm just worried I get there and I just stand there lost lol. Oh, and I was going to fly into SF on either the 29th or 30th, and if I fly into Reno on the 30th.

I went in 2006 but I went with a friend, this will be my first time going alone >_<

I was on a hike last Saturday and met a couple of people that mentioned Burning Man. Since this is my first year (yes, I'm a virgin) I struck up a conversation with them. During the conversation one mentioned that she volunteers as a Burning Man greeter at the Reno airport. Maybe someone else can jump in but I'd think that the Burning Man greeters at the airport would have all kinds of info about transportation to and from Burning Man.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

I know there is or will soon be a BM rideshare thread......
or, you can start one......

look in "tips and tricks, maybe FAQ, perhaps share resources."

there is a lot of info out there on eplaya.

There is an official rideshare board on the main burning man site. Finding a ride here is chancy. I do try to move all rideshare requests to Share Resources, then delete them after teh event. .

Did the ride share board recently get reset? I ask because I put a request in about 2 weeks ago for pretty much the same timing as postcardbox, but now it's not there.
It's going to be alright.

That's why I'm asking what the odds are. I posted on there, along with a bunch of other ride seekers lol. I've checked on Tribe, Facebook, the official RS board, and even been checking it out here...most people are looking for a ride also.

So if I can't arrange a ride by the last week of August, I'm trying to decide now which airport to fly to and find a ride from there. It's confusing >_<

Flying into Reno will definately put you a lot closer. If you are flying here on the 30th, chances are very good you will run into other burners at the airport. I picked up a friend of mine a few years ago that just happened to be in Reno that weekend for a visit. The airport was crawling with burners!

Come on, you'll be at the Reno airport and you're asking about odds?

Yeah, go to Reno if you can, I'm only going to SFO because it was the closest place my frequent flier miles would get me.
It's going to be alright.

Shit, I just realized that Continental doesn't fly out to Reno and I have to get my tickets through them.
Would Las Vegas be another reasonable option?

Vegas has many more flights than Reno, but it's an 8 hour drive from Vegas to Reno and then you have to shop and continue another 2 hours north to BRC.
I think your question is, if you show up at the airport, could you find someone there to give you a ride. There is a BM hospitality desk at the airport that can offer some good advice and assistance. My feeling is that you can ask around when you get to Reno and you will find someone to give you a ride. Many people get there and are going solo and would welcome the company. It may take some time to find the right person, but my thought is that you can find someone to befriend.

There are also a couple offers for rides posted here if you can't find anything on the official ride share board.

Find an oddsmaker, bet against yourself and if you lose/win, rent a limo.

OK, I have to respond. Fly into Reno, take the free shuttle to the Reno Hilton, go to the exit, hold a sign reading something to the effect: "GOING HOME, BRC!" You will get a ride in no time. Three years ago we stopped to get gas, saw two burners walking to the exit (they hadn't been there long enough to even try and catch a ride!) and gave them both a ride to Black Rock City. Now we were in an RV, but the fact remains: There is no easier place to hitch a ride from than Reno.

I'm in the same boat... i need a ride from Reno... and I know what you mean - it would be nice to have it confirmed etc or at least a couple of ride options before flying there!

Another great place to get a ride is at Twin City Surplus in Reno.

Lots of burners stop there for last minute items.

I am a virgin burner as well. I'm flying into Reno on Sunday the 30th. I'm hoping to meet up with either some of my Theme Camp members, catch the biobus or possibly do the Exit thing with a sign. Goin' home for the first time!

Thanks for the offer J2cool.

My concern is that I have heard rental companies in Reno quadrupling their car and truck rental prices the week before the burn. Has anyone else heard this?

Remember that Burning Man is not the only event that week--the Labor Day Weekend is the last hurrah of summer anyway. Also, too many burners have returned cars and RVs in really filthy condition and the rental companies are understandably not please. It may also be too late to rent much of anything, they may all be promised. There's information in other threads. Maybe you could put rent or rental or rv into the search function and see what's been said.

I've never flown into SF looking for a ride but I have flown into Reno a few times without having a ride or rental car lined up and I've always been able to get one or the other. Last time I went (2006) I just went around asking people who looked like burners if they had or needed a ride. If they have space for you, you're all set. If they need a ride, you can team-up and rent a car together (or go looking for others who need a ride and/or are offering rides). I seriously doubt you would NOT find a ride. If you don't, just use renting a car as your default (and isn't there a bus?)
It's what you make it.

My wife had to fly out our first year. Reno is definitely the ticket if possible, half of your plane will be full of burners, getting a ride isn't hard at all.. Towards Tues or Weds or even Thurs your odds increase even more :)

Get your free flight to Vegas, then book a cheapie on Southwest to Reno. I'm not too sure how cheap you can get at this point in the game, but it might be worth checking into. 55 minute flight vs. 9 hours of car ride.

That's awesome Dr. Pyro! I haven't commited whether or not we will be able to take any extra's yet. Depending on which vehicle we take (depends on hubby's work schedule), we will probably do a "drive by" at the airport on our way out.

I had been planning on using the Burn Clean Project's Biobus, but the days I need are apparently sold out, as of last night.
At BM, I'll be staying with Root Society, but now I'm wondering how I'll be getting there.

I'm actually part of a group of 9 people, but a few of them may have gotten their bus spaces on time.
So I have little idea of how many rides I may need, but I do know the times we'll need... Monday, Aug. 31st & Monday, Sept. 7.

Essentially, I suppose I'm gathering info and looking at my options.

I actually managed to find rides from the rideshare board, tribe, and a couple of other places. I'll be making the drive with 3 others! It'll be a 13 hour drive! lol.

So, ever one else that was worried, don't! You'll find a ton of people offering to help you out :)
