Wanna 'SteamPunk' it up?

Post by Muttley » Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:53 pm

For this year, I've decided to go with a Steampunk theme for myself and I have thrown myself into this. We're making a 'Legway' and I'm sewing some costume ideas.

Anyone doing the same? Want to share ideas? Meet up this year?
Let me know!!

:D

There were two steam punk camps planning to be there last year, one didn't make it.

I'll try to see if I can find their threads in the 2008 themecamp posts.

Bomb Bay Tea Co. will not be returning as such in 2009. 2008 thread http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... highlight=

I think there may actually be some sort of steam village plan in effect. The crew of the NeverWas Haul should be returning and will be the center of a loose grouping of steaminess. I can't find the link to that rumour though, sorry. I will not be returning this year unless things go very badly. Weird, but true.

It should not be that hard to find some folks that appreciated your steampunkedness. In spite of the ban instituted by the 1996 Declaration of Adherence to Glowy and Blinky Principles one cannot escape the fact that Burning Man is the original home of the 'top hat and goggles' look.

Hi Muttley!

Welcome to eplaya. Nice topic for a first post.

Burning Man is definitely a good place for Steampunk. Since you are in Sacramento, you may find it worth the time to make a trek down to the Bay Area and get to know some of the folks at Kinetic Steam Works. Year before last they brought out an old Case steam traction engine and did it up right.

I’ve also heard rumors that the Neverwas crew will be back with a camp, possibly even on Esplanade. If we were going this year, we’d likely be found there often, if not full-on camping there with them. Alas we will have to sit it out for 09. 2010 is in the planning stages, though.

There is a handful of Steampunkers here on eplaya and even more machine-heads and Contraptioneers who love to build stuff. Please do hang around and get to know the place and people. I for one would love to hear your ideas detailed out. Plus you can get lots of good feedback from others.

Cheers and glad you’re making it to the playa!

Here’s some links for inspiration and to keep you busy:

I really enjoyed the BBTCo last year.
A young blonde girl, perhaps 12, called to me from the street and enticed me to come in and enjoy some tea. (I hate that I can't remember her name.) I also met DB and Halcyon. I got a coloring book full of their art.

Sorry to hear they won't be there this year.

Hey Risky,

That would have been Friday or Florida. I'll let you worry about which one is her playa name.

Hi Muttley,

Me and my crew will be steaming it up this year. We are based in Santa Cruz and would love to meet up on the playa.

I am sad to hear that you will not be with us this year as I will be bringing a Contraption like hand car that I made in '05. It is now new and improved and I was hoping to meet up with you for a chance for a friendly race or just to pump around the playa.

hey Muttley, Moose, and all others steampunk-oriented - I'm back this year and camping with a new camp which is dieselpunk/steampunk oriented (and the "steamier" side of steampunk at that!), Rathskellar. I was regular visitor at BBTC last year and was disappointed there wasn't a bigger special Steampunk gathering there rather than a general opening each day (not that that wasn't great mind!). I know the Neverwas Haul is definitely coming back this year (they've been holding fundraisers) and I do believe they will have a strong steampunk contingent as before.

I am hoping there will be some kind of steampunk gathering this year so people have a focal event that could gather many folks in one place at one time, and if no-one's organised one yet, I am happy to put my hand up to try and co-ordinate something.

I'm working on a costume this year, trying to find a good blend of a steampunk-interpreted explorer and scientist look.

You should stop by The Time Colony! In particular, the Time Warp Ball will music of many eras, Victorian era included, remixed and played in our Time Machine.

I tried to go to Time Colony's website this morning, it didn't work...and I blogged about Rathskellar envy.

It's down temporarily as we switch hosts, should be back up in a couple of days (the main reason I haven't made a thread announcing the camp yet!)

The basic info is also here, though we may toss the Science lectures, as Pi camp seems to be dedicated to science discussions. We're camping with The Playagon village, and should be easy to find, since we'll be the shiniest.

I was going to say that I was beating the rush to a hypothetical steampunk name generator website and calling myself Wormgear, but then I remembered that there already was a steampunk name generator website.
