Michael Jackson + Burning Man?
What could Burning Man and Michael Jackson possibly have in common? No jokes about how his hair exploded in to a flameball during the filming of that Pepsi commercial, please. I'm being serious here, and have thought about this question hard over the past week since learning of the King of Pop's passing to the other side. I've been thinking about the things I appreciate most about Burning Man -- freedom of expression, originality, devotion to creativity, genuineness, heart and soul, being brave enough to fully embody one's true self -- and feel like these qualities all came together in MJ and his music.
I felt moved to celebrate the gifts he gave to this world by making a musical mix that explores the evolution of the artist from his early career to the end. This musical journey starts with some selections from the Jackson 5, of course, before exploring Michael Jackson's early solo career, with a multifaceted look at "Off the Wall" and his original melding of disco grooves with Motown soul. Eventually, we reach "Thriller," looking at half of the album's hits from various different perspectives, before running out of time at the 79:45 mark -- just the right length to be able to burn this mix to CD. Part two, to be released in a couple of weeks, picks up with the second half of Thriller and runs through various side projects and the most intriguing sounds from his later releases.
Now, those listeners looking for a run-through of his greatest hits can, well, purchase or dig out his many "Greatest Hits" collections. In other words, this ain't your mama's Michael Jackson. The mix is built on alternate takes, mash-ups, early home demos, interviews and, especially, remixes. There are many, many remixes of Michael floating around out there in cyberspace, and I chose a wide variety of reinterpretations: some ready to bump your booty, some corny and others just plain weird.
(One other BM-MJ connection: I couldn't have made this particular mix had I not spent time having my former arbitrary musical boundaries pulverized on the playa. My time spent in Black Rock City has greatly expanded my musical horizons and I hope that this set is reflective of that in the varied versions of his classic hits. I'm not much of a DJ, more of a glorified mix-tape-producer. Still, I hope this surprises you, makes you smile and inspires the breakout of a thousand dance parties, alone or with friends.

I was thinking that what MJ & BM had in common was something along the line of the general public's belief of deviant behavior...or weird behavior...or something like that...
...or maybe its got something to do with the Elephant Man...
...or both have/had their home in the western United States...?
...or how about we start the rumor that Michael Jackson's remains are being cremated inside the Man, as per his will?!

Being as he and Richard Pryor are now both dead it can only now be told of their joint effort to contribute to collegiate education nationwide.
Jackson and Pryor started the Ignited Negro College Fund.

I'm not a big fan, but the man led a sad and sorry, strange existence. He was a genius, with all the horror that entails. Too easy to make jokes, and I've made them myself ... but the mix is pretty darn good. and completely free, so I'm goood.
I hated pop music in the 70s, especially the Jacksons and the Osmonds. Now? I'm getting soft, but still, give me Alice any day.
Farrah Fawcett went to heaven. "I've always been a huge fan, I even have the poster," says God. "Do you have any desires or wishes?" Farrah says, "Lord, I simply want all the children on Earth to be safe." So God killed Michael Jackson.

I listened to moontrolling's MJ tribute mix - in it's entirety - and loved it! I loved Michael Jackson too.
I have to agree with moontrolling, think he gave a lot to the world, both great music and amazing dance moves. All in all, he was possibly the greatest entertainer of our time. I also think he was a tragic, self-loathing, misunderstood figure. He never had a normal life and paid a tremendous price for all his success.
Here are a few older tribute quotes:
“Oh, God! That boy moves in a very exceptional way. That’s the greatest dancer of the centuryâ€

*takes out asshole chip briefly*
great site.
*re-inserts*
i've been tributing MJ for the longest time, as ever since i can remember, i have never been able to find pants that fit me, i.e. long enough inseams.
when he first "came out" wearing "Floods" as a fashion statement, i finally didn't feel like such a tall, dorky outcast.
the glove thing kinda freaked me out though, as it only reminded me of my Proctologist, who also leads a double life as a Glam Rocker and sometimes confused the two.

You wore a sequinned glove to a heavy metal night?RingO'Fire wrote:

That's pretty bold.

Yeah, it was definately a bit unnerving at first. When I made the sequinned MJ tribute glove last Friday (the day after Michael died), I vowed to myself, "I am going to wear this glove everywhere I go, all weekend long." In some ways my tribute glove was a joke, but in other ways it wasn't. I only took it off to eat, sleep, and go the bathroom. My motto for the weekend was "No time for haters!" [MJ haters that is].brcprincess wrote:You wore a sequinned glove to a heavy metal night?RingO'Fire wrote:

That's pretty bold.
Saturday night, a friend invited me along to go see one of her friend's band play. I agreed, having no idea they were a metal band. At the door, I saw a guy I knew and considered a casual friend, Keith, working the door. Keith's kind of a big dude with his Master's in Philosophy and a massive chip on his shoulder for being some kind of misunderstood, unappreciated genious. The exchange inside the club went something like this:
Me: [Exuberantly, Holding up my MJ tribute glove] "Yo Keith man! Check it out!"
Keith: "You know how I feel? One less pedophile in the world, that's how. Die, fucker, die!"
Me: [Practically shoving my middle finger up his nose] "Well, fuck you Keith!"
Keith: "Yeah, he totally got what he deserved."
Me: [Again, practically shoving my middle finger up his nose] "Well, again, fuck you!"
Keith: "Well, I guess we have to agree to disagree..."
Me: "Guess so..." [walking away]
There was one other exchange with this sort of redneckish dude in his little leather biker vest. He said "Why don't you feel bad about Elvis dying?", to which I responded, "Hey man, I love Elvis, but he died thirty years ago. Michael Jackson died three days ago." He sneered. I shrugged my shoulders at him. Sorry, got no time for haters.
There was one thing that was awesome though. Dianne's friend, the lead singer in the band we had come to see, came over to our table before the show. Seeing my glove, he said, "Dude! That's awesome! I love me some Michael Jackson!" So, at least the guy we came to see appreciated it. I met everyone in the band and their GF's after the show. They were all really cool and appreciated the sentiment of my tribute glove.
So, there were definately some uncomfortable moments wearing the MJ glove to metal night, but overall it was a fun, positive experience.

BM has been pre-empted...
Due to the great popularity of the music legend, BM has been pre-empted and instead will be called "Jackson Man". A huge Afro made of braided horsehair will adore the figure, sequinned gloves will be given out at the gate and fire dancers will be required to Moonwalk across the playa,

What I get out of all this is that being a child molester is OK if you can dance well enough.
I never liked MJ's music, even before he started buggering little boys, but I do acknowledge his extreme talent as a performer.
If he had been any of us, and not so rich and popular, he'd have gone to prison.
OJ was a great football player, but if he'd been a good enough singer and dancer you'd all be supporting him. Of course, OJ didn't do it either... he was another celebrity who could afford to be found not guilty.
Why are all child molesters vilified except this one? Sure, MJ had a crazy life and a lot of unique circumstances and problems... I bet a lot of molesters had a rough and crazy life. That excuse isn't good enough for anyone else, but you give MJ a pass because you like his goddamm pop records.
It seems that the split is between the people who think being a good enough pop star excuses child molesting, and those who don't.
I'll go fuck off now, saving you the trouble of instructing me to do so.

GreyCoyote: "At this rate it wont be long before he is Admiral Fukkit."
Well, I think OJ got off because the way the police and the prosecution handled the case, there was no way to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
I haven't seen enough evidence that Michael Jackson was doing more than trying to vicariously live a happy childhood via other children, to make up for a childhood spent pursuing stardom at the urging of his father. In any event, I figure that judging him was up to the Court system, and not me.
For the record, I liked some of his songs, disliked others, and got really sick of hearing his music when he was at the peak of his popularity. Also, I thought his deliberate portrayal of himself as being weird(er than he actually was) was a foolish move on his part. As it turns out, I was right-- it made people all the more ready to believe he was a child molester.

Thanks Captain. I'm so with you on this one. If it walks like a duck... MJ displayed all of the "red flags" of pedophilia, but apparently having enough money to actually build pedophile Disneyland somehow allowed him to fly under the public radar.Captain Goddammit wrote:What I get out of all this is that being a child molester is OK if you can dance well enough.

oh shucks, you know MJ liked his boys just as much as L. Ron....
the parents were pimps, in a sense, but they were wise to take the money and spare the child the ridiculous publicity that would have followed him the rest of his life, or worse.
think about it...it must be pretty shitty to be Monica Lewinsky....you cant even pick up your dry cleaning without being laughed at.
then again, i'm sure there are some who envy her...
like rahm emanuel for instance.

Ok, here is my chime.......
I dont think MJ was a pedophile.
In fact, I dont think he could have sex at all.
Think about this folks..........how in the world is a man of 50 years able to have the voice of a 11 year old?
He lost his jewels many many many moons ago people.
