Back again for our fifth year on the Playa, the Black Rock Beacon is gearing up for Black Rock City 2009, bringing you a unique mix of news, opinions, photography and smoked-pork-product trivia.

Fueled by ridiculous amounts of non-vegan-friendly, high-protein, chemically preserved porcine goodness, we keep tabs on what's going up and down on the Playa. We're planning five issues (six if somebody burns the Man early), and we have some new equipment that should sharpen up our photo quality.

So you're wondering, where do YOU fit it? Well, we hope you'll enjoy reading us as you explore the city, and maybe drop by during the 23 3/4 hours we're frying up our namesake . But if you want MORE, we can dish it out. We need a few good Burners to help us write, edit, produce, and distribute the paper, and to give us a hand with the preparation and consumption of tasty breakfast meats. Beginners welcome, except in the kitchen. And, um, well, if you like our paper and want to give us a hand via PayPal, we're up for that too.

In extensive testing, baking bacon turns out to be far superior than frying it.

Doesn't matter how you prepare bacon as long as there is lots to go around.

The Black Rock Beacon is my favourite volunteer job. I joined them at my virgin burn and have been there ever since.

Drop round to the camp to pick up your morning paper OR volunteer to deliver the paper to some camps in your neighbourhood. It's a great way to meet burners and they love getting the paper delivered.

Volunteers still needed at the Black Rock Beacon, especially circulation specialists.

Have you ever wanted to be a newspaper boy or girl? We can make your dream come true!

It's the best job on the playa. You take the morning newspaper to a portion of the city and everyone loves you. Best way to get schwag and find out how much burners love news AND gossip!

Goathead says they need to be Faux News Hotties. but personally I'm not a fan of Faux News (Fox) so we'll take any kind of hottie!

All ages too, Sail Man, bring your little fellow around for a volunteer shift. You and he will love it!

Hi Risky, we don't know whether we're coming or going yet, just like everyone else!

Theme camps won't be assigned til August 1-ish, so we don't know where we are any more than anyone else does.

BUT

For the last four years, we've been in the 9:00 plaza. We also put out newspaper boxes in Centre Camp, in 3:00 plaza, at the Man.

And sometimes if you're real lucky, you'll get a newspaper hottie delivering the paper right to your camp.

just me, Goathead. It's a perennial problem that I admit to. That's why I go to Burning Man, I hope to emulate others who are obviously having fun!

BTW, I watched as a professional photographer worked with models at the Lakes of Fire event in Michigan to create a Bacon calendar.

There were over 5 lbs of bacon used for making costumes. You'll have to wait for the final product but I would suggest it will be THE calendar for 2010.

Oh and to refer to the original post, this photographer also volunteers at the Black Rock Beacon! Watch for it.

Anyway where we we before I so rudely had to WORK....

While Bacon would be wonderful for delivering the paper, not real doable on a daily basis.....

There are things associated with bacon I can think of though...

Hmmm, I'll ask him about the Bacon calendar. We're all going to a concert on Saturday night. I think he's going to use it as a fundraiser for a burn project so I don't want to step out of line and post it.
