gifting?

I'm not big on schwag myself, but I know some friends that are serious schwag collectors. :P

I vote for the lending-a-hand idea as a gift or something else non-MOOPish.

I'm a massage therapist and I gift massage frequently, just as an idea. Easy and generally appreciated and I don't have to carry anything extra! :D

I have to say that when your partner is evacuated off playa and ends up in Washoe Med access to a sat phone is a modern wonder.
Otherwise, I don't really need the outside world.
I'm sure that in 05 a lot of Louisiana/Alabama burners wanted to know that family, ect., were okay. They have legitemate uses. I like it being sat phone only, something with a little more oomph than a cell phone.

well, actually one of my sons, the 24 yr old might be coming with me this year and it's in my best interest if his mom does NOT get a call home. the hell that would follow is unthinkable.

I love it when someone is kind enough to "gift" me something. It is encouraging to me (in a small, Southern, boring, art-less, fun-less town) the rest of the year.

The best physical gift I got last year was a small Burning Man pin that I added to my bag (it's still on there.) I agree with others that said the random acts of kindness were truly appreciated. I received many trinkets and knick-knacks that are sadly in a landfill now. Unless you are going to give something truly special (and related to BRC,) I'd focus on doing something nice for someone.

This year I'm going to bring some empty Altoid tins to give to smokers that don't have an ashtray, some crystallized ginger for a sweet treat, and a couple cans of Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Sun Block to share with the sun-baked and overheated (it's 45 spf and it cools the body.)

Both elementary schools and nursing homes might have been able to use those as art supplies. Of course, I'm lucky enough to live near a great "art supply thrift store."

You'll have nightmares of the creepy massage hand from the underworld! Sweet! :D Maybe I can hook up some haunted house sounds to it or something...hrm.

I have received schwag and trinkets I did not care for, or liked at the time and now they're anchors. It all gets recycled into art. Or regifted, LOL.

Anyways I wouldn't be too worried about what to gift your first time out there. You will see how it is when you get there, because most likely whatever you think its all about, it isn't. And whatever you think it isn't, it probably is. But simple things like picking up moop, or like Playa Tom said "a smile and a good attitude" really will get you far, and make you feel good about yourself. Everything else falls in place.

I'm a first timer and was thinking of making some simple stickers that say You Are Beautiful with the Burning Man logo. I figure it wouldn't be an annoying thing to receive, and if you don't like it it's easy enough to take it off, crumble it up and put it in your pocket. What do you all think?

Okay, I'm going to preface this by awknowledging that I"m a middle-aged curmudgeon with a bad attitude. It would remind me off all that seventies happy talk self-esteem boosting stuff.

However. Don't let middle-aged curmudgeons spoil your fun. It only encourages them. If this comes from your heart, then it's good. The one thing is the moop (material out of place--free floating garbage) issue. The backing and the torn off stickers. Go up and ask "can I put this sticker on you?" (and if you're wanting to put it on someone's ass be very specific and say "can I put this on your ass?") Then they have the opportunity to accept and to choose where they might want it. Plus you have a nice little ice-breaking conversation.
