Bugs on the Playa
I'm going for my first burn this year and I'm wondering what to do about bugs on the playa.
Should I just spray myself with off?
Bring a can of raid perhaps?
I mean with those giant metal spiders I've seen in the videos, a traditional bug net just doesn't seem like it would be enough!
I'm not really afraid of spiders but if I woke up with one of them hanging from the top of my tent I'd be sure to soil myself.
So how do you keep those buggers out?

The occasional praying mantis that is blown in on the wind is a nice thing to see out there. Don't worry about bugs and only bring bug spray if you like the way it smells.

Just stay away from the Dirty Hippy Camps and you should be fine....
otherwise, you may come home with the same critters they brought with....
and you dont want to have to be THAT person on line at the drug store with a bottle of RID-X in your hands, now do you?

If you bring a can of mapp gas with a torch attachment, you should be able to keep the metal spiders at bay, the agressive ones at least. I haven't had any problem with them. If you leave them alone, they leave you alone. Just don't put your hands or yourself into any dark enclosed space without shining a light or knocking... they scuttle away if you don't come up on them unawares.I mean with those giant metal spiders I've seen in the videos, a traditional bug net just doesn't seem like it would be enough!

I was amazed at the enormous number and size of bugs on the playa over the 4th....but then the playa was still pretty damp just under the surface. Was grossed out by the giant flying black ones that would catch another bug and devour it.

No Bugs on the playa except for an occasional spider that lives under you in the mud cracks, the rare mantis and a moth or two.
Beware the mantises bite!
Notice the desert camouflage. Most are green though. I guess the brwn ones live along the edge of the playa in the saltbush zone and the green ones come from the sage zone.
So stay in the Ohzone within the orange fence

Mantises aren't the only thing to be wary of on the other side of the trash fence. Fear the graboids when the ground tremors.Apollonaris Zeus wrote:No Bugs on the playa except for an occasional spider that lives under you in the mud cracks, the rare mantis and a moth or two.
