Mmm...SCA and costumes and breastseses...I had to join in.

Littleflower, for a hat, buy a big cheap straw hat (thrift store, Ross, TJ Maxx, etc.) as your base. Then, you can shop for stiff fabric (like organza) or use fabric stiffener to create layers (that woman's hats are nuts in that movie!).

I'm working on two barbarian costumes, thanks to some fur finds at the local thrift store. Just ripped up a few coats and handstitched them back together. Or you could layer and tie with leather strips (could be cut off of shoes, purses, belts, etc.).

The other is mwa ha ha top secret...something I, much to my surprise, haven't found pictures of...anyways...

I have a squirrel skull I'm using, and some wishbones, you can just start collecting bones (quail and cornish game hens are fun), if you're not vegetarian.

It really depends on how nerdy - I mean, erm, accurate you want to get.

Red Sonja is another reference movie (ha ha ha) and, of course, THE BARBARIANS!

c.f.m. ... thank you so much for your ideas! i actually bought a cheapo hat at a thrift store and took all the crap off of it, but adding stuff has had me puzzled. i love the idea of starch! i've been all over thrift stores trying to figure out what would work ... and i have some cool fabric, because my sisters sew, and always drag me into fabric stores, and i LOVE fabric. i got some grommets and will make a lace-up thing ... and i got some faux fur ... big pile of stuff, actually ... i keep thinking cinderella's mice will come along, and make stuff for me!

if i run into problems can i pm you for more ideas? you sound like you have plenty ...

hope you're having a great time ....

Random costuming suggestion - eBay has pelts relatively cheap, shipped down from our northern friends in Canada...

I just picked up a surplus of Fox faces (yes just the faces...fur coat manufacturers don't use the faces in the coats, and i figured they would be a good addition to costume stuff). 30 of them for about $16 (dunno what I'll do with thirty...I'll figure something out I'm sure...)

Just a suggestion.

- Joann's Fabric had some little ravens on 70% off

- PM away! Getting other people feeling awesome via outward accoutrement is a hobby of mine.

- If you're not on tribe.net, it ain't great, but there's a lot of craft, costume, etc. tribes you can post how-to questions in.

Don't be afraid to cobble. That is...some real chainmail, a kid's toy, a cheap-o bagged "sexy warrior" or whatver, male barbarian plastic "armor," over a full skirt. And a wig head.

Hit local costume shops, Halloween stores in the off season, etc.

I'm completely in favor of someone dressing up as Red Sonja in our encampment :). Besides, the movie should be coming out later this year; the character would be recognizable :).

Real fur??? What an idea! :) I'll check ebay.

I'll be visiting The Bone Room in Oakland soon to see what they have for us.

We were going to have a sign. I'll visit Joanns for pretty birdies. ;)

By the way, if any of you vaguely imagines ;) that you'll be camping with Barbarian Camp, please PM me with your real email and real names. Wolfe, Littleflower and Ygmir, don't worry, I got you. I think that we're up to seven campers and we want food and camping situations sorted out so that nobody winds up miserable. Thanks.

And Wolfe, you mentioned swinging by on Saturday for some final construction. That would be smashing. ;)

On with the savagery.

Is that you? The black might be for evening wear. That color tends to get hot under the blazing desert sun. ;)

If you want cheap fur on ebay search for "craft cutter fur". Not a lot this time of year, more in the ebay stores than auctions.

I have two bags of old fur coats my SIL had in the garage. Not sure why she bagged them, moths? Lice? But they've been outside in bags for at least two years if not longer. If they are not infested, I may be able to offer them to the hordes.
