i think simon might have been wrong in his damning of jocko.
it is not for us to judge, rebbi, you are correct, and wise.
he will be judged by eternity, and we humans can only dream of what that may be.
if simon we're here, i think he would say he was sorry to hurt those that loved mike.
he wasn't thinking straight, and sometimes, he speaks too soon. It's the ADD.
lets go swimming.

I've taken my children twice to DC to see the sights and each time they have been compelled to discuss peace afterward. The whole city seems like a memorial to death, war and imperialism.
Fortunately the Smithsonian is there too and you can spend some time celebrating innovation and human excellence.
Oh and the boys always liked the Lincoln Memorial best.
On one trip, Jason, my youngest at 13 that year, whispered that the Vietnam War Memorial was like a "bleak wall of senseless sacrifice".
We had taken our picnic to the Mall that day and watched as endless streams of people approached the wall to find their relatives' name. We talked about the facts of the war and the influence that political decisions had on it. But most of all we talked about the effect on families and how it still affected them years later.
My father is a local historian here and in 2004 he published his 14th book in which he interviewed all of the families of those from our village who had served in the Second World War. It started out being a romantic commentary on the heroes of war but ended up being a sad commentary on what happens to the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and a social history on the loss our village had sustained.
There is no romanticism in the act of war. It hurts countries, humanity and families and has no redeeming end. When humanity can choose to resolve differences through negotiation and set aside the greed which motivates the acquisitive nature of war, then we will have achieved something like a neutral place to explore peace from.
Thanks Deb. The right path starts with moms like you and what we teach our children.

My parents helped by passing on some of their values.
I thought of you today and this thread when I was reading another article.
This is about a war that I didn't even know happened. As the author suggests it has been wiped clean from the record books. You may find the context interesting.

Well worth a gander.

Vancouver burner drowns
I am reposting this from another Canadian burner.
A tragedy has struck the Burner community here in Vancouver. A young man known as "Howler," or David Fletcher, is presumed to have drowned while swimming at the Diversity Festival on Texada Island this weekend. I
personally didn't know him, but just heard about this and thought I should
repost it here, in case any of you may have known him.
Here is the report:
News Services July 14, 2009
A Vancouver man is presumed drowned after swimming in the ocean off
Texada Island Friday night.
David Kevin Fletcher, 35, was reported missing on Saturday by friends
who were with him at the Diversity music festival on Shingle Beach, on
the island's lower west shore.
Fletcher's untouched clothes were found in a pile near the water,
which indicates the man went in for a swim and did not come out, said
Powell River RCMP staff Sgt. Andy Brinton.
Brinton said the waters were calm Friday night but the current can be
strong along the coastline.

There will be a space set aside for him at the Illuminaries Lantern Festival
at Trout Lake in Vancouver.

Legendary CBS anchor Walter Cronkite dies at 92
NEW YORK (AP) -- Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman of the networks' golden age who reported a tumultuous time with reassuring authority and came to be called "the most trusted man in America," has died. He was 92. CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. Friday with his family by his side at his home in New York after a long illness.
He was the face of the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981, when stories ranged from the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to racial and anti-war riots, Watergate and the Iranian hostage crisis.
It was Cronkite who read the bulletins coming from Dallas when Kennedy was shot Nov. 22, 1963, interrupting a live CBS-TV broadcast of the soap opera "As the World Turns."

I call myself a news junkie these days...but the first TV Anchor I remember is Walter Cronkite. There will be many anchors to come, but that's one set of shoes that will never be filled again. Not even close.

"And that's the way it is, July 17th, 2009" Good night, Walter Cronkite...Rest in peace. (From the twitterstream earlier this evening)

While Missouri gave the world the likes of Rush Limbaugh, she also gave America Walter Cronkite. A man that was trusted more than anyone in power in Washington DC, and who was invited into millions of homes each and every weekday night. While he has been off the air for many years, those of us who were fortunate enough to have watched know we were watching a true icon, a master. Godspeed Mr. Cronkite. And thank you!

one of the few talking heads you could actually trust.
i grew up watching uncle walter. he was a very very wise man, and a rare light in the darkness.
not to mention his fondness for strip clubs, but i digress.
Goodbye dear Teacher, say hello to mr. murrow for me, i'm sure you two will have alot to talk about.

Today is my dad's birthday!!!! HaPpY BiRtHdAy, DaDdY!!!
His name was Roger Leroy Stepke, born in Detroit in 1935. He died in February 1980 from colon cancer. He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. I went skydiving twice because of that. He was a nature lover. I get my love of camping and fishing from him. He loved the Earth. I get that from him too. Every time he'd take us kids fishing and camping, he'd give us a hefty bag and make us go pick up cans and garbage. He hated litter bugs. He said we should always leave the Earth better than what we found it. My dad would have LOVED Burning Man. He wasn't alive when Sammi was born, but I always felt him watching us from afar. Now he watches Sammi and me and baby RJ. I feel his smiles and love in my heart and soul always. LOVE YA, DAD!!!! Rest In Peace!!!!! XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

That has got to be really hard especially since it was Sonny that did it, so sad, I’d bet even Sonny will miss Lucy, the game is over, and in winning he lost.ibdave wrote:MozyBonz wrote:Sonny our dog just killed Lucy our cat who I loved very much.

Monkeypoo;
Thanks for the reminder that families of murder victims are deeply affected for their lifetime by that violence. Hopefully the good memories of your brother have helped you to cope.
(((((((((Monkeypoo))))))))))
PS. Just realized we have something else in common - coming from large families - you are the oldest of 8 and I am the oldest of 7.

Yes, without les today's guitar sounds would never have the sound it has if it wasn't les paul and great guitarist and inventor- reverberation was the sounds of 50-60's. I couldn't imagine hearing surf music without it or the rock of the 60's.
I ran into many muscians that I played with that studied with him, including a cousin, I used to play early black sabbath with back in early 1970 to Jazz players in college and on stage.
