Ok once AGAIN... Not everyone is in there showering... I'm in there to get wet and cool down. I go to my shower when I want to get clean. In fact I don't really think most people are showering behind those trucks. They are keeping cool.

You don't like to go in there, its too dirty for you, yea we got it. Let people do what makes them happy. Why discourage people from having their fun. Besides all the shit in the water is going into the playa which then turns to dust and finds a nice home all over your body, hair, food and every other single thing thats out there. I have a better chance of catching something off a public restroom doorknob.

Time for some bluntification...

Not true. The water used on the roads of BRC comes from the hot springs and at the rate it is drawn from the springs it is pretty fresh water.
Double not true - as the guy whose trucks have done dust abatement on the Black Rock - the water could come from a clean source, but the truck it is in has hauled shit water, and cattle runoff beofre hand. May hav ebeen clean going in - but not going out.
also non potable is defined as follows.

Non-potable water is water that is not of drinking water quality, but which may still be used for many other purposes, depending on its quality.
If you strained the solids from black water, you still have black water.

Saying things that are completely untrue is wrong. If you don't know what you are talking about. Don't talk.

Stay away from trying to change how we use the water trucks. It is a lot of fun, the dust is minimized and we watch out for dumb fucks. Otherwise when you hear my horn, come a running and I'll clean you up.

I really hope your not advocating this as I am sure the contract says not to encourage it. thats why theres no cameras anymore on the back as well

Anyhow, unlike oneeyedpricks ever so cute n special comments, I actually am very interested in this and I think it could be a great lil experiment. This topic was about someones idea for a project but has morphed into the subject on the water that is in the trucks. This has been talked about time and time again throughout the years with no solid facts about EXACTLY what is in the water and if it is high enough amounts to harm a human. So in the spirit of Burning Man, "If you see something that should be done, then why aren't you doing it?" I have an idea. Just for the hell of it.

My father works for a water treatment plant in California, only a couple hours outside Black Rock. So I'm going to grab a couple of water samples from different trucks at different times of the week during the event to take back home. Ill bring these up to my fathers lab and see if he can run some tests to see what amounts of what things are in the water.

If not for any other reason, it would calm my curiosity.

Don't know of anyone who has gotten sick from the water, but last year a guy slipped in the mud behind the truck and broke his leg right near our camp. Early in the week, too. Poor guy.
It is always possible to catch some germ-y disease from this kind of thing, but if you are not swallowing the water and have intact skin (no open wounds or sores), I think the risk is minimal....
I have been tempted myself to catch some cool; at any rate, I enjoy watching the ones that do.

My suggestion that people cool off in the water from the trucks doing dust prevention was wrong and I should not have said it.

The water in the trucks doing dust prevention cannot contain fecal matter, there are people walking around barefoot.

As the sign says, "non-potable water, avoid contact"

my suggestion might have applied years ago when BM was fun but things have changed. Safety is the number one concern today, so for your safety these rules will be enforced.

I only really wanted to correct this statement, but I got carried away..

Perhaps this year the BLM will issue citations to people who run behind the water trucks.

Well, aren't we the self-righteous one. I think the -r is appropriate in your case, i.e. negative respect comes to mind.

I have more then once read both here and on tribe that the water in the trucks is non-potable, as I'm sure others have, and as others have posted. If you have first hand knowledge that the water is in fact drawn from a natural spring, and as a result much cleaner/purer then the term "potable" portrays, then a true burner would have pointed that out in a nicer, non-dickhead way. I see you have only 4 posts, and joined on the 12th of July. Way to go giving us a good first impression of yourself.

Now why don't you toddle off and go simmer in some hot springs, you obviously need to cool down.

I suppose this discussion is lost to emotions which I apparently started by telling someone they didn't know what they were talking about. That was wrong and I should not have commented on that.

But there seems to be a misunderstanding.

I am not attacking anyone and I hope that this can be discussed without recremination.

Yesl, I have first hand knowledge that the water is in fact drawn from a natural spring. The water in that spring is not potable. There are things that live in the water in that spring. But people go in that water all the time without having ill effects.

Potable water is water that has been tested and has been shown to be drinkable

Non Potable water is water that has not been tested or has been and is not drinkable.

The water for dust prevention done at Burning Man comes from a local natural source. People soak in the water sprayed on the roads.

If someone would like to explain things differently please do.

I have retracted my suggestion that people cool off in this water.

I applogize to anyone I offended. But the water does not come from the toilets.

Can we agree on that?

Think about it, if they were spraying piss water on the ground for dust prevention, when the water dried and the dirt started blowing again we all would be breathing that dust and the piss water that was sprayed on it.

Also, to the OP, no.. don't let soapy water get on the playa. You can see in in the winter, the soap foam. No soap water should ever hit the playa.
