How Much Water

I know that it is of great importance that everyone drink enough water, especially out on the playa.
I'll be new this year, so preparedness has been on my mind. As everyone here has pointed out, it's impossible to be completely prepared.
Still, we must try, and I think I've found something that can help - that is, at least with water consumption.

This website: http://nutrition.about.com/library/blwa ... ulator.htm can suggest how much water to drink daily, based on a number of factors:
body weight
time exercising (up to 90 minutes)
state of pregnancy or breastfeeding
high or low altitude
dryness of climate
number of alcoholic drinks to be ingested (up to 10)
extremeness of temperature
presence of fever or diarrhea

Basing my environment off of what I believe the playa to be like, my result is:
116.8oz or 3.5 liters a day, not counting the 20% I'll get if I eat well.

I'm going to use this information in deciding which camelbak to buy, but I imagine it would also be useful in deciding how much water to have on hand.

OK, thats getting a little to technical for me. Last year we used approx 12 gallons for 2 Adults and one 5 yr old dust magnet. We didnt use any for showering, instead doing the wipey dipe thing and occasional foot bath with water and vinegar. We had a body rinse station near us and that was out "shower". Most of the foods we took required no water to prepare. This year we have an RV that has a 40 gallon fresh water tank which we'll use for anything but drinking, and instead we will still bring about 12 gallons for drinking, most frozen in the coolers etc.

It was truly heaven on lips

to take a deep draw off of a partly un-frozen jug of water.

Really hard to say.
I've gone through two litres in a very short time riding a bike or walking.

Depends on whether we have a high humidity year too.

I bring 2 gallons of water a day and always have excess at the end of the event. I use my beverage cooler water for showering. I think the ORG recommendation is 1.5 gallons/day. I bring more as a safety buffer and to give away if necessary. In the first few days on playa I drink much more water than I do in the following days. I think my body adjusts and becomes more water conservative. Keep records to monitor actual consumption but definitely bring some extra as a cushion. Let us know how it goes.

Well, I suppose it would be nice for around the house but it would probably get all clogged up and useless on the playa. Besides, my little dust magnet would give me nothing but grief for trading him in, start crying, and with no Mickey D's and a happy meal to placate him for miles and miles, I shudder to think of that

It could be helpful to some. But I always wind up bringing waaaaaay more water than I end up using anyways. I always like to leave a bunch of leftover water and other shit at the DPW Donation Station and have extras on hand for the random creatures who seem to appear and disappear into the dust.
