Mozy, you can only get to me through Mylarry, and he's Super Larry after all. Be careful. He's wiry.
Hey, page two!
I didn't say ANYTHING about rules. Guidelines and suggestions and pleas. But I'll whack the crap outta you with my Biog Ten Inch if you get out of line. No, really, I have a wooden Dr. Demento ruler that says Big Ten Inch on it.

But life is no fun without rules!!AntiM wrote:I didn't say ANYTHING about rules.
Seriously, think about it!
You have the most fun when you are breaking at least one rule. If there were no rules, there would by no rules to break, and life would be boring.
If you want to reach for the stars, you better have long arms!

please move this to the Ass Kissing Thread, pleeeeze!MozyBonz wrote:can't sit still wrote:AntiM, you're doing a fine job. The anonymity of the net seems to bring out the rudeness in people. I'm not rude in person and I don't see any reason to be rude in anon. Youtube is a good example. Some people have nothing intelligent to say, so, they scream out something banal, rude and stupid. I see no reason to be snarky either. Everyone has been in a new situation and asked a dumb question. There's no reason to jump on their shit just because they aren't up to speed in a given arena. I find it easy to just "let it pass" Many others don't.
When a blog loses civility, people avoid posting something that might attract ridicule. Nobody wants to waltz into a room filled with people with slings and arrows. That's why I don't ever flame. The "bar" thread is probably the most civil place on E-playa. Casual is best. Not having a problem with self-esteem, I don't bother with socks either. There's nothing that I would say behind a person's back that I wouldn't say to their face. Casual and honest seems to work well.
Dan
that's one of the reasons I like you Dan.

That would give someone to much power to delete counterpoint statements. Don't the mods already have the power to delete a post or just a whole thread?spectabillis wrote:suggestion:
its a good time to re-evaluate a phpbb mod that allows the

there's a line between acceptable interaction and hostility - it may differ from person-to-person but that doesnt mean the line shouldnt exist.Apollonaris Zeus wrote:We can't control everything and interaction is part of the community whether someone likes it or not
radically inclusive isnt an excuse for hostility, nor an excuse for collective acceptance of all behaviour.

I tried all day today to be super nice.
I even went sickly sweet with sugar on top in a thread at the Introduce Yourself forum.
It was no fun at all.
Thank the all mighty digital bits for the Lyrics thread.
Can't we get Trilo back to balance us out?
Where is Simon ... I need some love ...
I almost took a box of crayons and jumped into the Fire Elf thread ...
Oh the humanity!!!

NOT pointing fingers at a2z or anyone else -MozyBonz wrote:...he knows he just chooses not to.
its not a coincidence that some will rationalize against certain measures meant to change the environment from a hostile one, to something more civil that can be used by a broader user base. and unfortunately, the radical inclusion spirit and principal became adopted under a strict interpretation that has a tendency to ignore the spirit and environment it was first formed from. those two elements have help feed and foster the present state with hostile and undesired behaviour.
changing this would displace those people who enjoy passive and agressive behaviour, and enjoy using the board purely for thier own means at the exclusion of others. they are not going to refrain from doing so, not willingly, and will be the most vocal and resistive against it. always worked out that way, always will.

answered with anohter question :
at the event does radical inclusion apply to arsonists, sexual assaults, physically violent assaults, or thieves?
i know those may seem extreme examples, but (once again not to point fingers) there are almost equal examples where it has been applied to accept certain things here. it can be a challenging ideal to follow, and every situation is slightly unique due to human nature.
there was a separate topic in feedback meant to address these complexities independantly through a case-by-case analysis, but that fails when the user base ratio falls... its that ratio of people who support the board evenly with the goal of a collecitve community for all - to the number of people engaged in hostilities or using the board for thier own means at the exclusion of others.
its also not a coincidence those means of self-moderation are often a target by the same type of people.

Yes I would say it does, however much it would be a benefit to all to not have to worry about these things. Just as in the real world, I think it's everyones duty to protect themselves. Even though it's nice to think of BM as a little utopia in the desert, the same people are there that are in the real world. IMO radical self reliance means more than just bringing the things you need to not die in the desert. How would you not include these people? DNA screening at the gate linked to the FBIs criminal database? I would hope that the community aids in the safety of others on the playa in conjunction with the established means out there to deal with these situations.

I agree with you. Sometimes things get taken a little too far, by me as well as others. However the vast majority of the people who give snarky answers here also post real ideas and advice to others. I enjoy the snark and the majority of it IMO actually has a message behind it as well. I do see a few people here that just seem to respond to everything with a "Fuck You, You're an Asshole" response. I've also seen them get called out on it, and start posting things with more substance. Socks also can carry a message as well, though I've seen them just used as tools to stir the shit as well. I don't have any socks because I'm more than willing to say what I have to say directly to anyone, and never post anything that I wouldn't feel comfortable saying to someone face to face. And damn the snark and socks can be downright entertaining.

Looking at the origins of that thread it looks like it was a good idea. I don't know when it turned into a place to just report commerce, as I'm not willing to go through one page at a time to find out, but as far as I've ever seen it has just been used to report commerce. Looking at the beginning of that thread it looks like a simple pm to people that were way out of line seemed to work well in the past. Is that still protocol?

Clarification?

i have to avoid the "used to be better way-back-when" attitude because it has a tendency to derail discussions from others reactions, and its not immediately relevant. but burningman wasnt an environment with too many connections to the 'real world' with many problems and people we wanted to avoid. partially successful because it was purely by word of mouth, and like minded people naturally associate with each other. but because it was still incredibly open, diversity of sub-cultures was encouraged as various invitations and motivations were based out of san francisco and its art community. these groups included the likes of us from srl, cacaphony, club collectives, sf bdsm... none of those are all that open to the general public - not out of intentionally exclusion - but more out of the natural screening functions that many underground movements put up.SilverOrange wrote:Even though it's nice to think of BM as a little utopia in the desert, the same people are there that are in the real world. .. i see something very different, also evidenced by a significant number of people who prefer to simply leave than make an issue of it. those include the people who you see post, then react to the hostility, and you never hear from them again. sure, there is a social screening function that keeps things from totally dissolving by the addition of people who are generally clueless, but the line was crossed some time ago into open hostility and a complete lack of accomodation to others who have an equal right to the board's resources.... However the vast majority of the people who give snarky answers here also post real ideas and advice to others. best to hear from active moderators on that.Looking at the beginning of that thread it looks like a simple pm to people that were way out of line seemed to work well in the past. Is that still protocol?
cant, that would mean pointing fingers and many still persist here. its a guaranteed ignition point for hostilities quickly escalating into conflicts, and some of those individuals have very serious personal issues.Clarification? re: its also not a coincidence those means of self-moderation are often a target by the same type of people.
there are rabbits, there are wolves, there are goats and sheep, lions and birds of all types. deer, chipmunks, santas, clowns, levelheads and tilt a whirls blah blah blah ad nauseum.
then there are sharks, and weasels, and jackals.
these three really havent evolved much....they are pretty much near perfect in what they do.....they kill...thats it, period, the end...
they are very simple organisms that eat or be eaten, and therefore have no need to evolve into anything higher.
efficient, ruthless, pretty much like the raptors we all like to make into plastic toys and comic books.
check it out.....they are gone, we are not.
eventually, these so called perfect organisms will be pushed to the fringes, and die out.
this happens in religion, politics and social construction.
let them exist, but know that they are there, and be safe, as you are anywhere, not just on the playa, or off, or here, the netherworld, or while having special happy fun time.
do what thou will, but dont do it to the detriment of anyone else.
possibly this concept of personal self-regulation and respect would work....
ah fuck, what the hell do i know, i'm just a fucking robot.
