It's telling her that Burning Man means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and for me it's mostly about jizzing on everyone.

Welcome to BURNING MAN !!!
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

The purpose of Burning Man is for me to go around squirting my load all over a bunch of unsuspecting hippies and ravers.
I wouldn't have guessed.

OH, and of course, back on the topic.

Folks are welcome to come solo to burning man.

Here are some tips:

get there early and pick out a good spot to park, setup your tent.
Yes you may sleep in your van, but when it hits 150deg. you may not want to
BM is all about giving, so be prepared to give as much as you get!

You are more than welcome to come by our camp anytime, RockStar Orphans, for a much needed spa treatment and refreshment.

BM is an EXPERIENCE, but you have to participate to really have fun.

Find your Schtick and give some to everyone!

and, as crabby Liz said, read the beginners guide to be fully prepared.

Take care, hope to see you there!

Mission Statement

Our mission is to produce the annual event known as "Burning Man" and to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society. We believe that the experience of Burning Man can produce positive spiritual change in the world. To this end, it is equally important that we communicate with one another, with the citizens of Black Rock City and with the community of Burning Man wherever it may arise. Burning Man is radically inclusive, and its meaning is potentially accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, embodied ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship. Finally, in order to accomplish these ends, Burning Man must endure as a self-supporting enterprise that is capable of sustaining the lives of those who dedicate themselves to its work. From this devotion spring those duties that we owe to one another. We will always burn the Man.

why do you hate the haters?

have you not joined them already?

or do you hate yourself? Just because you have a short stick does not mean it wont displace the appropriate amount of empty space.

it is really all in the mind anyway.

harinama, i'm afraid that when you say never, god listens.

you WILL meet liz on the playa.....try giving her a gift, instead of a closed mind.
god is in the data.

My stick is adjustable.

And did somebody mention an electric chair? Sounds like a fun time to me. Where do I sign up?

The haters are just pretending to be haters. It's their performance art.

Ah, I wasn't supposed to give that away.

I'm thinking about the question asked in the thread title. Is there something about the word camping, or the thought of camping, that is scaring folks? AntiM had a good question about ease and whether this was becoming a requirement for some to consider attendance. Where's the RV to share, the theme camp to supply my shower and shade, cook my food, and keep my beer cold? Whos' going to keep me safe? Or is it the thought of being on one's own that is so scary? No reliable group to hang with. No cell phone pacifier to suck on when anxious. Who's going to show you what to do, how to fit in; what is the cool way to be? Who's going to support and share your sense of costume and art and participation? (Do you like your stuff? Are you willing to tell other people you appreciate their stuff? that's the basic go round on approval from my perspective. try to answer yes to both.)

I would say that my approach to camping is going against traffic: from the solitary to the communal. There's not much congestion from this direction, and a lot less worry about how the dynamic is going to work. I researched what was needed and got my kit together. I enjoy my neighbors and I bring extra chairs.

I would say to anybody frantic about not having an RV to share, or a theme camp lined up: Don't think these are critical to having a good experience.

Just go with what you would need in order for yourself to survive. Leave the expectations at home, come with an open mind, don't worry about how you will make friends or how you will fit in. It will all fall into place once you get there. It can be kind of scary and nerve twitching for some, especially when you see the playa for the first time, and pull off that last piece of pavement and onto the playa. But once you roll through those gates and past the goofy greeters, there seems to be a sense of comfort.

For those who are going for the first time, I'm sure most of you guys have been doing all the research you possibly can about Burning Man, but I would recommend reading through the 'ePlaya Experiences at Burning Man' page. There are some really great stories of first timers who had a lot of doubt, fear, and intimidation of all things Burning Man and by the end of the stories they are talking about how "its the best time I have ever had", "I cant believe I was unsure of going", "it changed my life", etc...

I went solo for my first burn years back and can honestly say it showed me a lot about myself, and what I can endure when I am alone and put myself into extreme situations. So I would definitely recommend it to all the new people at least once. And what better time to go solo than your first time?

hey goathead. my only advice is if you aren't camping with a group. head toward the middle of BRC. and pick a spot. you don't want to be stuck with the tourists come thursday!
