DIY portable air conditioner

Unfortunately, it requires ice, so you'll be making frequent trips to Ice-atopia or whatever it's called.

Instructions here:

Something's screwed up in that url, so copy and paste but eliminate spaces.

A lot of trips. For the equivalent of a 12000 Btu/hr air conditioner (about what a lot of RV's have), you'd need ~40 lbs of ice per hour assuming the A/C is running 50% or so duty cycle.

I wonder how long you could make dry ice last in that thing. Or a combination of dry and wet ice. The AC unit I use has to be plugged in, which isn't really a problem, but the less electricity I'm using from my genny, the less gas I'm burning. I'm always looking for alternative ideas... This is a cool lil contraption though.

Oh, you should totally try it with dry ice. Be sure to seal up your tent/car to keep the cool in.

Fuck yeah!

Pour some water in there also for a cool fog effect then lie down on the floor.

I think I actually might. I have all the needed parts in the workshop. I think I may actually experiment with this. Im really interested to see how it would work with a larger cooler, and with the addition of dry and or wet ice... I like this a lot... Ive messed around with some other contraptions... Like a basic oscillating fan with copper tubing wired to the back of the fan and having cold ice water punped through the tubing with the fan propelling the cold air. The only problem with this is you need to recycle the water that has already run through the tubing. And there are way to many unsecured parts... Im interested to see what could be built off of this idea...

I think Jiva was refering to the CO2 offgassing and your asphyxiation in the sealed up car/tent.

Yes. Also dry ice has a significantly lower heat of fusion than water, so even when you factor in the gaseous CO2 coming to room temp from -78 C it still won't cool as much per pound as ice.

I think the ideal A/C for the playa would be something that uses a cooler full of water/ice as thermal storage, with a fridge unit trying to freeze it and an air heat exchanger running air through it somehow. That way if you lose power for an hour you don't wake up in an oven. But using ice as a primary source of cooling is probably only good for food in a cooler.

A wet bandana and a squirt bottle are by far the best and most efficient Playa AC.

If you see someone passed out from heat stroke, piss on them then hail some rangers. You might just save a life. ;)

cool tent fan for 15.99 on amazon-coupled with the spray bottle/wet bandana idea-and of course set up tent on west side of car or structure to get the maximum morning shade

You're not serious... you don't really think that will cool a tent or whatever abode on the playa...

Knock yourself out.

If you used a big enough container of ice and replaced it enough times that idea would work, but it would be HUGE quantities. It'd be cheaper, easier, and more efficient to just use a real A/C and generator - which actually even works!

A/C? WTF? Why did you come to the (hot) playa for in the first place. Stay home and enjoy.

I go to Burning Man to be outside and enjoy the weather.

Well now that we know why you go... Other people go for their own reasons, some to try experimental ways of AC. lol. Besides there are uses for AC out there for people who have young children, or people with medical issues where the extreme heat is too much. My mother for example has something called RSD and would be impossible for her to get along out there without having a climate controlled area.

But as for me, I'm like you, I love the hot weather out there. Though it is nice to step on someones bus and get blasted with super cold AC from time to time. :D

And Capt Goddammit, either way its a rather cool contraption that could be the base idea for something better. Or could be used in places elsewhere besides the playa.

I went and bought one at cabellas last weekend. It'd be great to cool the cab of my p/u truck during a whiteout instead of starting the engine and running the a/c, I've done in the past. I'll be supporting the ice sales this year. It works like a down sized swamp cooler. Unfortunatly it produces condensation at the fan and the (ice bucket) has to be emptied of water periodicaly. The manufacturer, 02cool, frowns on using dry ice. The one pictured looks good for a homemade job. Good Yankee enginuity there phil. 8)

anyone thinking this is a cool project to try, might want to consider where they use the AC unit, some have suggested trying it in a tent, but I doubt that would be very effective, as your tent has absoultly no insulation, and you would be basicly trying to cool the hot air outside around your tent as well as the air inside.

inside a vehicle, or RV might work? i'd be interested to hear any updates after the burn.

I'll give the one I got a try this week. Monday or Friday since I'm off these days. Since I'll be using it to cool a regular cab 1995 Ford 1/2 ton (F150), I think it'll work fine. I might even see how good it is in the bed which I have a camper shell on since thats my sleeping quarters during the event or any time I go out kicking around Nevadas backroads. I would'nt use it in a tent either or even an RV since that would be to big as far as cubic feet go. The one I got runs on 8 D cells, permantly installed rechargeables, the vehicles battery, or a house current.

I'll stand corrected  . I tryed it today and it was fair at best just cooling the cab so it would be pretty much useless in cooling the bed with a camper shell much less an RV. I hope phils homemade job is better.
