Etymology: Middle English, from Old French peligrin, from Late Latin pelegrinus, alteration of Latin peregrinus foreigner, from peregrinus, adjective, foreign, from peregri abroad, from per through + agr-, ager land -- more at FOR, ACRE

2 : one who travels to a shrine or holy place as a devotee

So now their going to let fuckin' pilgrims in... There ought to be a special ticket price for them. (Just trying to keep in line with the burningman spirit(tm) here folks...)
I thought it was a fuckin' camping trip in the desert. I'm never gonna get it??

my innerself,
I have not been to BM but I got my ticket taped to the side of my monitor. And the only burners I have actually met are the nutcases at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ocburners/
Check it out and see if they are people you want to associate with.
General info. ocburners are south of LA. oc means Orange County.
There are posters there that you recognize from here but I will not post them so you can find out for yourself.

i found this elsewhere, and thought it might pertain to the original discussion:
"Burningman has a diabolical ability to disappoint your expectations in direct proportion to their size."
if you think you know how it's going to be, you're most likely wrong. this holds expecially true after you've been before.

It's rarely a good idea to think that "real life" (that includes camping in the desert) approximates anything like "on-line" life. "On-line" interaction is vastly different from face to face.
I think one's best bet is to concentrate on what they can bring, rather then on what they expect to get.

I think I am staring to get it
well I think I am starting to understand this whole BM thing now, at least I think so. When I said that I thought BM was like one "big happy family" I should have just said "one big family". It can be happy and harmonious on one hand and twisted and disfunctional on the other. I think if I was to go to BM I would have a great time, I like to think that I am a genuinely happy go lucky person and I seem to attract those types of people. Thanks everyone for your input.
If only everyone was stoned, then I would not feel so alone

to attend is to know
I swear its that cool avatar M I that reminds me of the V GER probe of Star Trek fame, knowing only that it wants...
Two friends of mine decline interest in coming to Burning Man...one a Radical Faerie who much prefers quiet commune life and the other an artist not into large groups of people and techno-art Mad Max vibes.
BRC playa time for me has an edgy all-for-one, one-for-all feel that has totally got me hooked. A sense of rough-edged community in a harsh environment where you bring cool creations to share and darn well better pull your own weight.

Hey Your Innerself:
Also remember that out of 30,000 people who participate, the small group of sarcastic internet junkies that correspond here are just a tiny little fraction of the community.
That's right, I called you sarcastic internet junkies.

God, that feels so good to hear some one else say it!Lydia Love wrote:No, honey. You don't. You haven't been there yet. This year will be my 7th and I don't understand it.well I think I am starting to understand this whole BM thing now
Lydia, my 7th too.. and every year I go it is a totally different experience. It's begining to turn into this litmus test of what the fuck have I been doing or wasting my time on in the 'between times' Holy turds!, have I taken on a totally new addiction without knowing it? 'Warning, Warning! BM could be addictive to your perception of realty' somebody stop me, I'm rambling again, just like I do all week when I'm on that crenulated crust of of flat bottom existence with a plethora of other souls just trying to have a good fuckin' camping trip .. and my mind's eye then drifts to: "And I Love it here and I love the smell of JOTS pumping our well packed stalls in the morning with my hang-over cure cup of coffee as this day-glo burner goes riding by down the street on his bicycle in dawns early light playing reveille on his Tuba! (sorry, I'm having flashbacks) All I can say is listen to Lydia, she knows, she knows...!
Love, =Iago=
When I first posted here about my burn experience, I got sniped and snipped and all-around blasted for it. For my grammer, for what I said, for what was thought of my "experience" and assumptions people made.
But you have to realize- You're only the text you type. I'm not all that eloquent in "real life" or online so I didn't take it too personally. I mean, I called everyone douche bags in one way or another but I didn't run to my bed crying afterwards. Most people who post here, the regulars I mean, are 1.) Very serious about burning and burning RESPONSIBLY and 2.) cynical as the devil himself.
So take everything you read with a grain of salt and have fun!

I suspect that both on Playa and on the e-playa you have to prove yourself. Its sort of like the stranger coming into town in a bad mid 20th century western. Everyone's eyeing you and taking your measure until you gain acceptance--or blow it altogether. Not that that dynamic isn't present elsewhere, but it's one of th e things that seems to be exageratted in this particular social experiement.vulgaris wrote:When I first posted here about my burn experience, I got sniped and snipped and all-around blasted for it.
