Using persistence of vision, the LEDs will make animated art on your bicycle spokes.

$37.50 per kit - one kit requires you to ride 15MPH for it to be smooth animation; 2 kits let you ride a more leisurely 10MPH. Get three for under a hundred, and wobble along at 7MPH. The spokes are sold on another site with other, cheaper Persistence of Vision kits.

I think the spoke lights at Anvii.com are better than Hokeyspokes and Monkeylights.

Their designs are elegant. I think the IR works a bit better. They're lighter, last longer (use AAA's) and you don't need any tools to install them.

Just my opinion based on the research that I did before buying.

I got a little POV thing at Target for 15 bucks with Schwinn branding on it.

Didn't show up very well at playa speeds on my bike, but at that price rotting from the dust is not such a disaster.

Maybe, but not necessarily.

I was around eplaya as long as it existed, but saw little point to posting with limited net access.
Hard to carry on a conversation that way.
And I couldn't figure out HOW to post for a long time too.
It's only obvious when you know how.

After much searching for a good price on LED light strings for the Fluffer project, I came upon these with 30 lights per string and ordered a shit ton:

They would do just fine woven tightly in your spokes in a spiral or whatever, then zip tie the small battery pack in the spokes as well, and the price of only $4.33 for each string if you buy 3 or more-- that's sensational for what you get. I like that the wires are a neutral color so they won't show up too much in the daytime. Shipping took over 2 weeks so plan ahead.

I removed the battery packs and strung three strings each in a series for 13.5 volt runs that is about what a fully charged 12 volt battery puts out. Then Professor Munz is designing some pulse width modulators so the computer can fade them up or down. The hookup wires are thin so they get slightly warm at that voltage if they are all coiled up, but the current draw is only .7 amperes for each triple run of 90 individual lights! I almost love them more than el wire!

How are these wired?

How's the light?
Are the LEDs focused or wide dispersion?
How's the color?

How are these wired?
Series or paralleled for 4.5 Volts? Parallel
How's the light? Bright
Are the LEDs focused or wide dispersion? Average, maybe 20-30 degrees but with some diffusion off too the sides from the clear encapsulation.

The strings of LEDs can be had in any color, plus RGB color changing. Color changing is the most dramatic, but not the brightest. For bright you want green LEDs.

My sister gave me some strings of battery led lights for christmas (she knows me!) that she found on clearance. They are about 6' long, all white, and have some nice chaser flashing modes. I just searched around on the web for a paint option for "light bulbs" and see some decoglass paints that can be used on a lightbulb up to 40 watts. One way to get a cheap set of white lights to be colored, and I'd like to see if with the flashing modes, and paint, and arrangement, perhaps I can make some crude animated design. Has anybody tried painting leds to change their color?

These are the best glass stains on the market, last time I looked.
Three certain colors can be mixed as primaries.
They are acetone based and should be tested on any plastic before use.
I would try to use them on a pure acrylic sleeve if possible, or cheap disposable plastic.
Most plastics have styrenes mixed in them and will lift or discolor.

The clear colors are clear and very pure.
You can use their clear and mix colors through it, like english streaky glass.

There are some stains meant for plastics.
They don't look as good, last time I looked.

My Kowloon'esse isn't that good, still waiting on the second volume of Kowloon for idiots...

I've also bought many packs of these little egg shaped lights that snap onto the spokes off of ebay. They're really bright, and hang onto the spokes really well. Took me a day to figure out that they only operate when its dark. I thought I bought a bunch of broken crap, I shook the piss out of them trying to get them to light up the day I got them, but put them on the spokes anyway, then that night I brushed against my bike and they went crazy. So don't take the battery tab out untill you get to the playa, or you'll wear the batterys (3 AG3's) down while driving if its dark. They blink red/blue on both sides. No on/off switch. They snap onto the spokes. They also take just about two weeks for delivery. Pretty bright and easy to use and cheap.
