I agree with reading and studying the stuff on here and the main page.
But, I bet you can make this year if you really work at it..........

Go here:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... index.html
and read every link on the page - seriously. The survival guide is linked to from there in .pdf format - download it for reading offline. Follow the other links and read all the information there carefully.

You don't give information on yourself, so let me make some guesses in offering suggestions. You can buy everything you need in Reno, since you're flying from New York. You can bring your own clothes and such, but you'll need stuff that's bulky and heavy, and it may be cheaper to buy it in Reno.

You'll need a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress. You'll need a shade of some kind. You'll need a stove to cook on, cooking pots and pans, plates, eating and cooking utensils, and a washpot. You'll need all your food for your entire stay, enough water to cook, drink, wash dishes, and bathe in. You'll need clothes for your entire stay; plan on it being hot during the day and cool (maybe cold) at night.

It's hot and dry. Bring eye wash and nasal saline spray; goggles, face mask; hat with a brim or cap with a neckcloth hanging from the back, maybe both, and each having a strap to tie it on your head during windstorms; sunblock; a washcloth and towel if you plan on bathing and you have enough water; soap for your body and your dishes. Lights for the night. Camera, batteries, and more flash cards than you've ever used before. Double that - more memory for your pictures.

You'll need a way to get from the airport to your shopping destinations. You'll need a way to get yourself and your gear to the playa. You'll need a way to get yourself and your gear back from the playa. You'll need a way to dispose of anything you're not taking back to New York, and please dispose of it properly. Five or ten thousand people dumping stuff along the road or in a yard causes terrible problems.

See here for first timers:

See here for other suggestions on what to bring:
http://www.cieux.com/bm/things.html

I recommend a bike, but you can get by with walking and hitching rides on art cars depending on your condition.

My guess is that your biggest problem will be transportation, so start looking into that now. There's no use wasting time on other plans before you know you can get from Reno to Black Rock City. Check on this board for Green Tortoise, ride sharing, and some other busses that offer transportation for fees. See here:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=29537

Renting cars may be a problem, I'm not sure about availability this late nor about rentals to Burners. Check Louise's Reno pages for info on rentals:
http://civilizedexplorer.pbworks.com/in ... =CivExReno
I'm not sure what she has on cars.

Good luck and have fun.

Read the boards. Look for others that are flying in and are looking to share rental car and rides.

There is a large community of burners in NY. See the regionals section of the BM site.

It is possible to camp in a minimalist way and still have full enjoyment of the event. See what others are doing when they fly in solo. All has been discussed on these boards.

This will be my first burn too. I started reading some last summer I still think the planning is a daunting task! I'm coming from CT so my trip will be similar.
Peace, love, intellectual stimulation, and good times!

you're planning on going alone? like the other people said, Burning Man isnt something you can waltz into. read up on what is needed for this event and make sure you thoroughly know what you're getting yourself into.

i would look on this board and try and find a camp to stay with. talk to east coast burners and ask for help. it'll save you a whole lot of headaches. be as nice, friendly, and sane as possible as many loners looking for people to stay with are totally sketchy or insane.

good luck!

I am pretty green on these message boards and am just beginning to understand Simon's well placed snark. However, I'll take a stab at this one and say that maybe Simon is simply trying to keep the last minute straggler noobs out and that he will be there with the proverbial bells on.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

That's exactly what he wants you to think.
