Open Camping??

Post by AnnoD » Fri Jul 31, 2009 2:54 pm

So here I am a virgin burner absolutely ecstatic about my first time attending burning man,My group consist of two other virgin burners and a very confused 2nd time burner.Originally we planned on staying in a theme camp with someone we knew but it turned out that that was no longer an option.Everyone else in my group had basically decided that the journey was extinguished but not me!When I made up my mind about attend back in February I was serious. So basically my question is whats the deal with open camping...around where is it usually located? are there rules or anything that i should be absolutely aware...oh where bringing a 26 foot truck for shade, shelter, camp next and in,ect is that alright??Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks guys! -Anno

p.s. Sorry if there is already a post pertaining to this.I couldn't seem to find it.

Roll the truck up to any non-theme camp area. Park it, meet your neighbors, begin camping.

Check the map here http://burningman.com/preparation/maps/09_maps/, everything not blue is open for you to camp on.
It's going to be alright.

Welcome AnnoD to eplaya. Check first page of this website. There you will find links to survival guide, maps, and a guide for first timers.

When you arrive Monday with your truck there should be many camping sites open. You may not park past the Esplanade in that open area around the Man. You may not park in theme camp areas without prior approval.

Big sound camps are on the 2 and 10 o'clock radials. If you want quiet you can camp near Hushville or on the outer streets. Be kind to others and ask around in the area you want to set up camp.

I'm surprised you have not been able to find information, check FAG section, that's frequently asked questions.

I trust that wasn't a freudian slip there, Oldguy.

If you look at the map the areas shaded blue are saved for theme camps. Most of the white areas are all open camping.

This question has been asked and answered a few times. I hope you will find enough information to put you at ease. I'm guessing that more people come unaffiliated than those that are hooked up with theme camps. It's a huge place and it's hard to grasp what 40,000 plus people looks like. Divide that number by the number of registered theme camps perhaps and you might get an idea of how many people show up, set up, and enjoy their neighborhood, and neighbors, without being in an organized camp. Do not worry. This was a big concern of mine my first time. I came in at night and just parked on the outer edge and thought I'd wait till daylight to get the lay of the land. Someone offered me a cup of coffee in the morning, and I figured it was a good place to stay. The map you recieve at the gate will show the shaded areas that are reserved. There's still loads of space to set up. Think of volleyball court scale, instead of parking space scale. If you chose to set up up in a tighter space, perhaps later in the week, or if you want to be close to the inner rings: be considerate; say hello; ask if someone is coming; if the generator stays on all the time; if the drummers and sound system go all night; questions that will help decide if it's a good spot for you.

My first burn I just rolled up too , got lucky and my neighbors were cool, You might want to be close to porta-poty but not too close, You will find the vibe to be very chill, reguardless of where you camp.
