Dust getting into my vehicle's engine???

Hi there,

My sister warned me about driving my minivan to burning man, saying that she thought dust or sand would blow into the engine and wreck it. Is this a reasonable concern? Do many people's vehicles get wrecked just from sitting on the playa for a week?

Yes, that's why smart people don't go to Burning Man anymore. You should be more concerned with playa dust blowing into your nose and wrecking your brain... just sayin.

Who the hell is your sister, Mrs. Goodwrench? As long as the car is not running in the dust for long periods, you will be fine. If you are driving a vehicle for the week on the playa, you should change the air filter and oil as soon as you get back to civilization. Getting dust on the engine will not harm it.

The only possible harm it could cause would be the engine might run slightly warmer then normal cuz the dust might act as an insulator. I'll park in street after unloading and rinse the engine off with the hose, usally leaving the engine idling.

Demonstrate to your sister how you will hose the engine off after you get back by hosing her off before you go,
then, and only then, will she truly understand.

so get there after 12:01am monday and leave the tuesday after the man burns, wont have to be idling in traffic

Seriously, it can certainly hurt your gas mileage on the way home. Buy a spare air cleaner and switch it out the moment you hit the blacktop after exodus. Then take the old one and bury it in your sister's lingerie drawer with a thank you note.

Your engine will be fine. The only problem I've had is dust getting into my vent system. Turning on the AC on the drive home after my first burn unleashed a dustcloud inside my truck.
