Alabama, too

Post by just-in-time » Sun May 02, 2004 1:28 pm

I’m driving back to Black Rock City for my second year at Burning Man. My tipi and 18’ poles made the 2,500 mile trip in about 41 hours in a Honda CRV with 2 ½ drivers.

I’m looking for an individual to share driving and gas (<$400). Will leave the Montgomery area Wednesday/Thursday before and stay until Monday before starting back.

As a newbie last year, I had trouble the first couple of days stopping saying “I can’t believe this” and understand how so many people think of BRC as going home. If you are a more experienced, open-minded person, let me encourage you to step out and participate in something that might change your life.

Any one else driving from this part of the world contact me and let’s caravan. I met some people from NewOrleans and Nashville that drove out last year. I hope to see the people I met last year and many more; I know a little more of what to think about BM. I’ll be near the port-a-potties @ 4:30.

Are you taking I-40 or I-70?

We were going to take I-80, but we may take I-70 instead. Not sure. Last year we made it from Massachusetts to NV in about 60 hours I think, but that included a nice 12 hour stop in Sydney, NE. :-)

I know there are some Carolina and Florida burners out there though. You'll probably have good luck hooking up with them.

One question= what about water? Are you bringing it from Alabama or do you plan to buy it in Reno or where?

The route this year will depend on who I can hook up with but will probably not include Kansas! What a boring ride. Maybe due east thru TX (another looooonnnnggg interval) or north to 80 and across. I’ve got family in CO, TX, AZ but none of them would understand BM.

The people I was with last year showed me the ropes with an overnite stage in Reno and then WalMart before the drive to BRC for food, liquor, sundries, ice, and water. They have everything. Water in 4-pack gallons and I would suggest about 10 lb of dry ice wrapped in a space blanket for the cooler with two bags of ice. It was Sunday til Friday before I had to get more.

Y’all come

80 is long too, but it's fast. I think it has a higher speed limit than some of the other roads. Don't run low on gas in Wyoming. There are some long stretches of nothing to be crossed out there. We came close but did not run out. Will do better this year.

Maybe so. I'll leave 8/24-26 and stay the duration. Smoker, stable, boomer, excited to go back for the second time. Have I seen posts about you? It seems like alabama is under the radar.

70 + 80 = 40

If you take the midwestern route stay on 70 to cross the plains. We came back via 80 one year and it wound up taking quite a bit longer time wise. Gas was more expensive and scarse as were rest/food stops. We're going to try the southern route this year and see how it goes. May be a tad warmer, but the towing should be easier and after 6 crossings it's time for a change :)

Cheers

need a ride???

Post by just-in-time » Tue Aug 17, 2004 7:15 am

My rider just advised he was going with someone else and I'm scrambling to find someone who will help me drive straight out from alabama.

Are there any last minute planners in the southeast that want a ride?
