what's the condition of the playa surface this year?

Post by drutter » Sun Aug 02, 2009 6:31 pm

Last year there were a lot of areas that were loose dust, or a layer of crusty sand on top of loose dust, and it made art and transportation harder than normal. I believe it was due to the playa not flooding during the winter as it normally does.

Does anyone know if the playa flooded this time? Does anyone have any information about the condition of the playa surface?

Thanks in advance for any useful replies. 8)

Hey, thanks for the link. There are a lot of places to search for info on these forums, and the search feature isn't exactly the best.

Anyway, for those who are also wondering, June was a very wet month for the playa, and by all accounts it has baked and hardened up into a very nice surface for vehicles and bikes. Might not be as good as 2007, but apparently it's much better than 2008! That's great news. :D

Here are some pictures I located, taken about a month ago:

Thank the good ram's head in the sky, I was worried the playa'd burned down!

Good to hear it's still okay.

An acceptable alternate answer would have been "we finally hotboxed the playa".

That's really amazing! Thanks for the link.
How long does it take to melt the dust? Do you know much about the process, chemically speaking? Is the result pretty much glass?

You'll be at 6 and E? Does your camp have a name?

Oh, and what size is your lens? Anything special about the process? Ever take a video of it?

(sorry so many questions)

Home brew for a home brew - sounds like an inside joke. But okay, whatever you say pal. ;)

I'm hoping to be somewhere around 420 and E, so we may be nearly-neighbors. I'll come looking for you. I assume there'll be a goathead flag somewhere on your camp. :p

hey goathead :D

i see on the list we're actually at 6 and Evolution - E is Extinct, Evolution is the outer ring around center camp. (6 and Evolution is pretty much the same as 6 and DNA, however.)

I thought it was a typo until i looked closer at the map! :P

see you soooooon......
